Hey DSM, earlier this year Menards had the 11% off sale. When they did, unlike previous years, they let you buy gift cards and get the 11% off on the gift card (you get a rebate later for that 11%). Although I despise rebates in general, the Menards ones have always come through for me and they make it really easy. Just send in part of the receipt it prints out for you and the little rebate card, no upcs or other **** or anything from the item, and you can put them all in one envelope to mail to the same address at the same time. Not too bad. Other companies should be benchmarking Menards for how to do a rebate properly. Using this 11% off rebate card, then whatever you buy later is "on sale". Some here have bought thousands of dollars worth of lumber, project supplies, etc. this way already this year. On top of that, when they had the 14% off bag sale, you could stack by using your gift card on that purchase. Even better! For just a day or two, they had overlapping 11% off and 14% off sales and you could do all three and use your gift card on that too! Something like 33% off in total that way briefly. So Menards is king so far this year on the discounts off retail. Nobody else has been even close to this. Unfortunately, I should have put more on the gift card when I could have as I'm already running low on mine!
I find over the years where I live, Menards is generally lower cost than Lowes or Home Depot on most things as a normal price. L or HD on clearance or super specials can be better, but not normally where I live. Now Lowes changes prices alot based on where you are. So your story may be different. I find Menards the cheapest for lumber here as a normal price and also better quality. So I like to go to Menards first, and others only if I don't find what I want there, which is pretty rare for me. I do also shop at our new Harbor Freight in town (yes, deprived for many years where I live). If I want foreign, their Taiwan Coo tools are not too bad or equivalent Chinese Coo are generally the cheapest price for it (many items can be found at Sears or Menards or Home Depot that are identical to the HF Chinese items, just rebadged and higher prices if you really search the items well).
I am disappointed that Menards Masterforce pliers are now Chinese Coo. Masterforce is their premium line. Their Performax and Tool Shop lines are also mostly Chinese Coo now. But Masterforce screw drivers are all USA and there are many others USA also, like the hammers, I think made by Vaughan. They also sell the Vaughan and Dalluge USA made lines directly. Now that I've used Vaughan, I have little reason to want to use any non-US hammer. They are really good.
You have to check the item on COO. Still, in total, Menards does still sell USA made stuff when it is competitive to do so and I support that. The more of that we all do, the more of that will show up and be available for sale over time. We in this country can change the current job situation here and future for US citizens, but we have to make that change one at a time. No one else can do so. Germany has done that. German citizens buy German in droves. Germany is one of the strongest economies with little unemployment as a result. If people start buying US, then stores will start selling US again and factories will re-open. I hope this can happen for Sears, but the company has to be willing to try to make this work. Menards is trying for sure. Don't know about Sears right now.
