I really like your build, and I've learned alot just from reading the thread!

Those joist hangers look serious!

Yeah. They weren't cheap either. Simpson makes them for triple and quad LVLs as well. Some serious metal.

subscribed.....really wanting to see pics of this finished. Excellent job man!!

ME TOO! It's been a long road working on it. I got the first lumber last November but then the design changed with some help from bczygan I wound up returning most of it and going with the LVL design you see now. I've had to keep stopping and work on other things or deal with family issues.

Since December of 2014 I've been dealing with my father's estate. Most weekends and even weekdays have been spent for the last year or more driving an hour out of town to work on Mom's property and trying to get it all organized, picked through and ready for a huge auction that we finally had last month. My father was a gunsmith for 30+ years after he retired from the Air Force. The property consisted of a huge 5 bedroom house, 2 bedroom house, 40x68 foot building, 40 ft semi trailer, 40 ft mobile home and a couple sheds. Every one of them was full of collectables, antiques, sporting goods, tools and more.

I kept some things for myself but we sold most of it all. It's a huge relief and I can finally get back to life and working on my own projects and time with my boys. My father was a hoarder of great things but it has weighed down this family for some time. I'm not completely free yet though. The man who bought the property at the auction decided not to buy and voided the contract. We are now talking with a realtor about listing the property for sale. I hope it goes quick or else I will be back driving down there trying to fix it up more to sell it again.

On top of all of this my two older boys are in scouts, I'm a Den Leader and they also play football so there's a lot of schedule juggling there between campouts, activities, football practices and games. Oh yeah, there's also a 3 year old boy as well so he eats up some time as well.

WHEW.....that was exhausting by just reading that....lol

Back at it today. I decided I'd 1/2" round over the treads before screwing them down.

Utah...SNOW BLOWS!
I just came across your thread today, I really like how stout this this is & how well it's turning out! About 10 years ago, I built something similar inside my 2-car attached garage, in an L shape so I could get a bunch of my junk off the floor. It's funny to me how similar yours is to mine. :) I used plenty of Simpson ties too, those things are a real life saver.:rocker:

Looking forward to seeing the final outcome with your project...when you have time, that is.:D

Man it seems every time I think I'll have time to work on it something comes up. I own a car audio and accessories business where I work on-site. Right now with it getting cooler the calls for remote starters are coming in. Hmmm....make money or work on my building. Money always wins. Before I know it, a week has passed.

Left side will be multiple tables for R/C planes, models and other hobbies for my boys and I. The back row will be all shelving for storage. I'm going to put curtains or something in front of them. The right side in front of the stairway will be a couch and a large TV for a lounge area.

Thanks for taking the time to detail out all of the hardware, etc. I'm tagging this for seeing future details and to reference when I get ready to build a loft in the shop we're having built.

Thanks for the comments. It's been a long project. Sorry for the delay. I've been so busy with business and other things I haven't gotten a lot done.

I did get all the plywood decking down. All I have left is posts and railings. I did happen to make these today :)

I built the shelf sections on the floor and my boy helped me carry them up the stairs. They are 11-1/2 feet long.

My shop is just full of stuff right now. Here soon I'll get it organized more. I'm going to have to move stuff around so I can get tools set up so the family can make their Pinewood Derby cars for scouts. I helped host the Pinewood Derby Workshop this weekend at our church hall. Those are all my tools except the two Rigid sanders.

That's cool to share your tools and talent with those who don't have the tools of their own.

My dad even lathe turned the tires and applied graphite to the sides to get the weight just right. It came in second to a kid whose car looked like it was carved with a broke Barlow knife. We alternated lanes and it still came in second. A couple weeks ago my brother was helping dad clean the attic of the garage. They found two of my cars. Time and heat has taken it's toll and ones paint was flaking off.

I still have the car my father and I made when I was a Webelos 32 years ago. I'll have to take a picture of it.

I have three boys ages 10, 7 and 3½. My older boy will be crossing over to Boy Scouts this Saturday. We will be making cars for a long time. My second boy started this year and his little brother won't be long behind him. Last year I was a Webelos Den Leader but I became the Tiger Leader with my boy. We now have Adult, Family and Siblings classes for the Pinewood Derby so everyone can enjoy. We also have a new aluminum six lane track to speed thing up a little bit with all the entries.

Got it done this weekend but I've now decided to add to it so I can put my pool table, shuffleboard and card tables up there. 1581e934de2f56c0b400a2ae0eef3096.jpg279c6535feac5f9e2ef2a6b34f1308f8.jpg9f35cb5f78e21faefe72cee285e5452b.jpg

That looks really good! Which part are you going to add onto?
The right side. My left bay has footings poured for my lift. Right side has a clearance of roughly 7-1/2 feet that will fit most vehicles under. Even my Excursion is 7'4" with it's roof rack so it's still a functional bay after I build over it. It just makes sense to do it and get my stuff out of storage. My pool table and all has been out of use for four years now and I miss it.

For my railings I decided to go with cedar. I already had some balusters that I bought a year ago that I had to sand down to make look fresh again. I got them for 50 cents a piece but were weathered a bit. That was a lot of work but worth it in the end. They are non-cedar but I may stain them later. I made a jig that made it a lot faster to put the balusters in with 4 inch spacing to stay in code.

Thanks. It's been a long road and I thought I was done...lol I've already started to design the extension on it. I would be adding about 11 ½' x 23' to it. 09d07b5371a3b163087008087888f396.jpg

Just wow....I'm so glad you updated this thread cause I would have never seen it. I have a 30x30 that I want to build a mezzanine in, about 10' depth, across the rear and this has given me so much hope!! Amazing job...

Except for the needed height for a lift there's just so much wasted space above you. A little money and some work and you have more room in the same spot

Thought I'd do a little update. I finally got around to adding onto. Instead of adding to the building I figured I'd just build over the top of one of the bays. That's an additional 23x12 flooring for my pool table, future shuffleboard, card table, couch and tv.

First off I had Menards deliver me two 24 foot long 14 inch deep LVLs. This is the **** they bring me. I paid a $70 delivery for one really nice LVL and one nasty green one which happened to be a 1/4 inch taller than the other. After calling them I'm informed either I can wait a week for them to get a new one to my local store or I can take it to another location to swap out which was about 40 minutes away. Well I wanted to get started on it right away so off to the store I went with my 24 foot green beam sticking out. Being my trailer is only 16 feet long I made my own way to carry it which worked out quote well.

After getting the beam back I work on it by cutting my two posts to carry them and using my muscles I heaved each one up into position then sistered them using Fastenmaster TrussLoc screws like before.

Next was on to marking and mounting the joist hangers using Simpson StrongTie #10 2-1/2" SD Screws. After lifting and hanging 23 joists overhead I called it a night at 2am. My arms were killing me the next morning

Have to put more screws into it but finally got a sub floor on it. Have to mount the railing back and then decide if I'm doing laminated flooring, tiles or real wood. Don't want to get too crazy in price but want it to be nice too.8f390169fac14c2274a65217975de85d.jpg2ed52792dada0af07e180c7062520336.jpg

You might as well run a ceiling over the lift too for even more storage. It could be like my basement concrete crawlspace. Cant stand up in it but it is great for storing tons of stuff.

I think I've decided that I want to do a 4 post lift instead.

I keep going back and forth myself. 4 post with bridge jacks, then I can store a vehicle in the air. 2 post to help remove a bed and cab on my old truck project. Don't have the budget for both.

Damn that's some work. Loading 26 boxes of flooring from shelves to the cart. From cart to back of truck then truck to shop. Still have to carry them up to the mezzanine when needed.334adcb5c8413a948ad5c55940bd5923.jpg141e5ecf4ab9d2e9a24c4c0d24f91e72.jpg

Is that laminate or vinyl?

I did 17 boxes of vinyl last weekend. Man that stuff gets heavy fast!
