I think I've decided that I want to do a 4 post lift instead.

Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk

I am totally sold on a 4 post. No special concrete conditions needed, moveable, bridge jacks make them extremely useful...etc. my only issues with 4 post are higher cost and less of an ability to remove bodies from frames.

Sorry for the delay. Just a lot of life going on. I finally started moving on the shop again.

A buddy came over Saturday and didn't flooring for me. He does it for a living and knocked it out in a just a few hours time. I would have taken me much longer. Now I need to get everything up there and mount the railings. Also redesigned the layout.

Interesting setup with that door in front of half the second floor. I guess the mezz wasnt in mind when the building was first built?

might want to put a stop on the railing side of that laminate floor. depending on quality sometimes the joints separate if there is any flex in the floor.

I'm putting a 1x3 on the end and then some 1/2 or 1/4 inch thick on top to make a corner moulding over it. With the thickness of the flooring, underlayment and 3/4 subflooring the biggest corner moulding I can find locally is 1-1/4. Just doesn't do the trick.

Man this has turned out awesome!! But I knew when I was on about page 7 that I could just sense an addition coming soon!! I figured once you got up there and saw how great it was to have a little extra space, it started knawing at you to go ahead and make it bigger!! Great job!!!

Thanks. It's been a long road on it. I get burned out or side tracked and have to get myself back into the groove. Also conditions haven't been that great in there with no heat or ac unless I was running a loud heater. While my buddy was installing the flooring I was working on installing the ductwork for my 90 percent Lennox furnace and A/C.

About a month ago my buddy sends me a text with jus a picture of the furnace and A coil. I hit him back and ask if he meant to send me that. He says "you need this in your shop and I need a remote starter on my wife's truck". DEAL! He had just removed it on a house that they were upgrading and its already setup for propane. A few days ago I got tired of looking at it and I've been so busy I called him and asked how much he would charge to install it for me. He said he just bought another vehicle and needs another remote starter. DEAL!!! Took him about three hours to do. Would have taken me much longer.

Tonight I'll add the last duct piece. Add five vents and I'll have heat that doesn't make me smell like kerosene or propane. I've got two 72" fans to put in the roof here in a couple days and it will get the air circulating.

Finally got out to the garage late last night. At 2am I got the duct and vents finished. Cant wait to get the ceiling fans up and get that air moving. Definatly will keep the furnace from cycling so much. b481b58f6e4f934997ab9134ef1e900e.jpge7d2066971e857c34b38028e59e6899a.jpg

WOW. I actually took the time this morning and read through my post. Sad it's been going on since June 2015. Time has flown. Trying so hard to have it done or at least workable by next weekend to host my scout troops Pinewood Derby Workshop again. I'm going to have 60+ people coming through to make their cars.

I realized reading this that I hadn't posted pictures of last year's workshop. It was a couple days after I had finished the railing before I decided to add onto over the bay. My buddies that are also on GJ always say I should create a Garage Gallery post that will show the ongoing projects and even the past things that I've done with the shop, the house, the yard and other buildings on the property. I always have something going on. I might sit down on night and type up something.

Heres some pics of last years Pinewood Derby Workshop. Throughout the day I had maybe about 60 people come through to build cars for themselves or their sons and daughters. We have several categories for scouts, siblings and adults.

Been working my *** off on the shop this week since tomorrow I'll be hosting our Pinewood Derby workshop again. Last Saturday I rented a Skyjack so I could install my ceiling fans. I went with the 72 inch 9 blade Slinger V2 fans. I had my 13 yr old son helping me put the blades together while I was installing the fans. It was late and he passed out on me. He had a long day helping a fellow scout with his Eagle Project. I continued on to get them done and wire up outlets around the upper part on a separate circuit.

Sunday some friends came over for the Boring Bowl and at half time us guys came out to the shop so we could get the shuffle board up top. We took the cage off the SkyJack and the legs of the shuffle board just barely fit. What a back saver! Lifted, pulled it off and now we have a table up there. Still need to get all of the pool table pieces up there so I can have some guys come over and put it together and felt it.

Throughout the week I worked hard and many hours trying clean up the shop. I had a lot of stuff I brought back from dad's estate that had been collecting. Several boxes and totes that were taking up room. In the end I wound up with about six 55 gallon trash bags of stuff that I just didn't want anymore bit found lots of amazing stuff that goes in tool boxes or display. A huge relief to get to it although it takes me forever to filter through it all.

Friday I brought home a piece of bowling alley lane and got it mounted up to my large base I've had against the wall for about size months. Makes a great workbench.

Today I cleaned some more. Last night I also picked up eight LED lights at Sam's to go under the add-on. It was dark under there and these do the trick. They are actually adjustable between 3000k, 4000k and 5000k. They're also linkable up to four lights. I do a lot of audio and remote start jobs under this part and these lights will be great. I wired up two outlets so that I could plug each set of four into.

I then set my sights on getting that railing up. I'm going to have about 40 kids with parents through here tomorrow and I need to get that done most importantly. 7caa159ccb703103e4198b9b028b2841.jpg72f134dab0ed0e36423614bfcebef15e.jpg30e5a28568aac782650bf74356b39b75.jpgca3af531ee9aeb66d410fd40c3c2bcce.jpg876c3094e58a71ad617a6cbe7fc9c584.jpg47370612a278cb68e85b9d94c5cb6110.jpg879a9bcea298396f2fb72ff9e1971a5d.jpge50b1f144a1650746cf32f52ca8a2027.jpga534ef9a86b4d6747e6490eab1c5f4fa.jpg57378ca026c21af2d865e23c97120ea2.jpg92adbc509b786bf002819e55f9a17a0e.jpg0e9c548267c716e3d9681e509a8d555f.jpg810f7ba7f0fbb932fd364d6b7e257332.jpg2f2e5affcfd49bef13ff1490d1a32faa.jpg1f1f8df13428be294bb129b75fb9c677.jpg9a1ef233349548ee8c9900fbcfbfa0fc.jpg09c366ef3f89161ac259f8014cb6024b.jpg9a7770804281731ea577d65872205f54.jpg7d6fc433283f41e6143b70e724f5fcbc.jpg808c74147b00f151c269e19117ea58ab.jpg31009360c48a53b667dea44b90ea68d3.jpg77df7d325f20f7c4b5add5aa0aaab885.jpgf4acfeeb11745653b286cb5946758feb.jpg

A little update. My wife surprised me for a early Father's Day gift and had my Peter Vitale table put back together. It's been in storage for 7 years. It's coming together slowly. ef340ab0c4cd600eb64e76b776394a9a.jpgbb9278c47efa2f0ae13a5bb0c34eaf25.jpg3dca645afcd31ef464b5eddd5bcdd693.jpg239869b4190ea6b1c2091ce95f2b3b74.jpg90036305d69ef733fdfd192b77325234.jpg1f24e2ef34b73a4decbb794986a7d1bf.jpg1a483ffd8bab326f1ac5169cd5aa3938.jpg8f100876024c5a1f7c6f18c53b54cc1a.jpge14b844b2469116a0db6c8bf09641cb7.jpg

What an awesome thread!
Thanks. I haven't gotten a lot of feedback on it so I didn't know if many were interested but I share anyways. Figure my journey could help or give ideas to someone. I just got furniture for it a couple days ago. I just threw it up there but we'll get it put in place and snap some photos.

It’s definitely helped me though I don’t have your skills.

I didn't know I had the skills either. I just did a lot of research and when I felt comfortable enough I went for it. I wouldn't want to do this for a living but since building this I have done a couple others for friends.

Outstanding build. I've wanted to add something like this to our building but my wife discovered how nice and light it is there so doesn't want to add the loft.

Hi, I just discovered this thread and wanted to say good job. You really did a nice job creating more useable space in your shop. Very nice, and I hope you and your family enjoy it!

Thanks. Working on the AC side of it now so we can enjoy it. Missouri heat is just cooking the top floor of it till I get my ductwork up there. Planned on having it done by the 4th but it came up fast

Been awhile but I got some furniture up there and enjoyed a game with an old friend. I'm playing with ideas of the back wall. I think I want to go with some torched plywood panels. Easy to do and remove if I had to so some work behind them for wiring or whatever. I got a bunch of cool **** to hang on it. For the ceiling I'm thinking some corrugated steel panels with dimmable can lights sunk into them. 266db8eb0194a48e2f5dca4878435b96.jpg

Very nice.

I’m just about finished with my bunk room which is under my loft and will post those pictures soon. Then I’ll have to review your balusters so I can build mine.

Well I finally started on my build. I got all the lumber and everything back in November but could never get to it.

I've actually changed the design to have the stairway further back.

First challenge was to cut the notches out of the 6x6 posts. I found it easier to just feed them into the band saw and then cross cut the notches out with the circular saw.

After getting four posts up I bolted the 2x10 beams to them using Thrulok fasteners which are awesome to use. It's nice building it in 10 foot sections.

Next came the hangers and 2x8 joists.

One section done.

Tomorrow I should get more accomplished now that I've gotten the ball rolling.

When in doubt, make it stout!!

If in doubt, build for stout, has saved an awful lot of people from getting a bad experience.

Rather than have to explain why something failed, you get to show off your skills.

At first I was like, "Oh so a Mezzanine is a tall deck around a metal building."
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Excuse my ignorance but I truly thought you were building an outer deck around the shop. I wa thinking, why is he putting the stairs all weird like that?

I need coffee.

Awesome looking shop. Beautiful family.

Amazing thread! Just read the whole thing this morning. Inspirational as well, made me get off my lazy **** and get going on a project that I've been procrastinating about over the last year. I'm retired and have no excuses, you manage to do all that and still be a great father and husband while running your own business.

Thanks man! Time management has become a real challenge...lol. Boys are now 7, 11 and 14. They're in scouts, football, baseball, and track. Its been crazy. I need to work on the shop and have so many plans for it but just no time. I'm wore out.

Thank you so much for this thread! I found it just as I was starting to design my mezzanine in my Worldwide Steel building. I was able to learn from your 'evolution' and incorporated a lot of your design into my final layout. My building is 30'x50' and I am building the mezzanine in the rear of the building, for a 30' by 14'-ish mezzanine:

I'm sorry I missed this. Your shop looks like its coming along great. I need to post some updates. A LOT has been going on with the shop and even more with the house. New $30k septic system that has been run to both but I still need to bring into the shop and make a bathroom. I've also installed spiral duct in the shop. I've just started to rebuild my entire living room and kitchen floor from the dirt up so that's been an adventure and has taken me away from the shop as well. I thought about starting a thread on the Garage Gallery that I can post all the happenings.
