Here's my correspondence with the seller:

Q: Can you clear this up for all of us who purchased one - how did you go about getting this? Former dealer that got a crazy good deal on excess inventory?

A: I am actually not making profit, I am just trying to recoup the cash flow we injected in this whole welder inventory... Miller is offering goodies and rebates to promote their dealer network, I don't want to get into a fight with them by selling all those welder close to retail.

Not sure I understand the justification.

So essentially he's selling them under the table because he doesn't want to honor the rebate (which isn't even paid out of his pocket)?

I couldn't turn down the Hypertherm Powermax 45 for $1100. I've been pleased with my $375 pilot arc Chinese unit, but I know I'll LOVE the Hypertherm. Eventually I want to build a CNC plasma table, and then the crazy fabrications will begin.

So bottom line these welders probably cost only 500 bucks. If he's not making profit.

What he ment was the promo items free stuff from miller is so that they can promote their dealers.

Hasn't taken any of my offers yet

Welders are not like cars, a dealer owns their stock for sale... they're not lent on "credit" by the manufacturer. (This is not always true, for example Corvettes are always owned by the dealership) It sounds his reasoning like they have a significant inventory of welders/plasma cutters, which is capital held up in a non-liquid form... and they want to turn that into cash ASAP. Not sure what dealer cost is, but if it's $800 a unit and you have 30 units, that's $27,000 you've *******. Sell them for $750 profit and you are still getting $22,500 back if you need it for other things. Or dealer cost is much lower than we assume :)

Not sure what the margins are, how they were purchased, etc... it's possible he got a deal before all these rebate deals came up, maybe the rebate deal isn't valid in Canada, etc.

Now, this is purely a theory... they could be hot, but that's up to eBay and PayPal to deal with at this point :)

My thought is they bought these welders at a qty discount from somewhere, possible dealer getting out, with intentions on making some money selling under retail. Then when the rebates and spool gun deal came out realized they couldn't get buyers since they weren't a dealer. Then decided rather than wait a year to slowly sell to just dump them for quick cash, break even, and move on to the next idea.

Since the first listing (that we saw) and subsequent relistings he has sold 92 in 48 hours. Something seems fishy, most welding supply stores might stock some, but even zoro ran out on that last sale and I bet they did not sell 92.

I agree. I would love to bite on the plasma cutter but I just got a feelin' its scam. I guess no harm paying with a cc or paypal

I looked back, they sold WELL OVER 100 of these. Some as far back as March, this is either the long con, or this is the biggest retailer miller has ever known.

Miller also keeps a database of stolen welders, so if someone does get one, call up Miller and see what they say.

You know this? I don't see how anyone could possibly think selling 90+ fraudulently on ebay would get away with it?

If they got their account hacked, it would make perfect sense. The seller looks legit to us, then they unload 100 in a couple of days and run with the money, or spend it in some other way. Criminals are a lot smarter than most people think and most people are a lot more gullible than they believe they are.

Account could be hacked, or they were simply fake purchases used for the scam. These guys have been doing it a long time.

Your last post was pretty definitive for someone just speculating like everyone else...

It's a scam. Sorry folks.

When you consider the numbers it almost has to be.

I would imagine he has already. Paypal funds clear instantly and transfer to a bank account takes 3 days tops. Odds are Paypal will refund to the sellers and eat the loss. Just like credit card companies do when numbers are stolen. Maybe the volume is enough that they'll go after the seller, but sadly, probably not.

Speculation would be accepting any offer would be a tip off. By taking very low but near-reasonable offers the scammer got a lot more buyers...assuming it's a scam, which I'm really thinking it is.

I am not sure if the eBay account was hacked, or if he/she started from scratch and created fraudulent history. I'm not eBay, so I don't have the access to determine that.

But based on the seller's PayPal address and the fact it's all these "too good to be true" deals, I'd give it a 98% probability that it's a scam.

I bet the scammer is going to have fun spending $60K in the next couple days, no one can possibly leave feedback in that short time because the item would not be delivered yet.

Anyone that gets a tracking number working, see if it shows a weight, these will be fairly heavy, like 80 pounds. If it is a scam, they would be smart to ship something just to get the tracking info out there. That would give them about 5 or so days head start.

You can easily make shipping labels through PayPal account and it will email tracking numbers. But it does not mean it will ship. They can "ship" 7 days later all the while the funds cleared and withdrawn.

Good Luck to those that bought. If this is legit.....You ****.

I just sent the seller a message, I wonder if I will hear back?

"Just trying to decide if you are scamming everyone or if I should place an
order. I have never seen a dealer have this many machines. Are you the
biggest seller in Canada, did you rob a truck? Why should I trust you? I
think these are more than fair questions after you have sold 100 units in
48 hours. So convince me."
