Anyone recommend a starter set of 1/2 inch impact sockets? I will be doing auto work (lug nuts, brake and shocks etc.) I have both foreign and domestic cars.

Get a good basic set of ebay for about £20, i have loads of off brand sockets that get used every day and are absolutely fine;

If you want to spend a bit more then i would recommend a set by tekton, i have a deep metric set from them and they're also very good, but honestly i wouldn't say any better than the cheaper sockets. In fact my impact sockets by Facom don't seem any better than the cheaper sockets.

I'd recommend getting a set of deep and shallow sockets ideally, however if your only planning on getting 1 set i would go for deep sockets, they'll reach lug bolts better as well as loads of others.

You'll want some extensions and a swivel joint also, tekton again seem to make some good stuff but mine come from a company called Sealey (Doubt you'll get it there) it all came in a kit like this

How much this'll all cost will depend on the brand you go with and if you want SAE sizes too. Don't spend too much on sockets, go with a good but well priced brand and spend the money you saved on them on better tools that the sockets will attach to.

Thank you everyone for the great advice. I am going to start with the Tekton Deep SAE and Metric sets plus extensions. I can get everything for less than $100 on Amazon. Is there a dealer that has best pricing on Tekton stuff?

Then I'll buy it with no warranty. I sometimes use 3/8 impact swivels with the heavy 1/2" Milwaukee. Nothing broken yet but then I don't buy my sockets at harbor freight.

I have two full sets of impact sockets from Harbor Freight, and I've never been able to break one, even working as an RV mechanic. Probably one of HF's best items.

How much would I save going with the HF deep impact sockets over the Teckton sets?

Did my homework on this and can save about 50% going to the Pittsburg deep impact sockets. What bothers me is the Pittsburgh does not come with a case and they will be rolling around my drawer. How nice is the blow case that Teckton uses?

Are the HF sets complete? Most of them skip some uncommon sizes. This drives my inner OCD guy crazy

I like 'em, sturdy enough cases. I've purchased a few Tekton tools: Torque wrench, shallow impact sockets.
Perhaps the below link is an example of a set you're interested in. The US sockets are a few $ more. Like $27 compared to $23 for metric. :p
I really like that Tekton rarely skips sizes. At least the Metric sets usually have all sizes in a certain range.
$37.82 --1/2" Drive - 6-Point, 10 mm - 24 mm, 15-Sockets

OR $23.89 -- 3/8" Drive 6-Point, 10 mm - 24 mm, 15-Sockets

I need 1/2 inch, I'm going to go for the Tekton. I also think they have more socket sizes than the Pittsburgh. Gas to HF is $10 on my pickup besides. Nice to have ir to your door with Amazon!

Well there ya go. Also, w/ Amazon it's super easy to see similar items. The SAE 1/2" Tekton set doesn't skip sizes & 2 day shipping is quick enough for me to "save" the fuel.

Which "US" sockets are you referring too?

Pretty easy to infer he means SAE, since he mentions metric in the same sentence.

Got it.
Most of the time US means USA made on this site. I usually see SAE more often.
Yeah, sorry i did mean sae as bk13 said. Had a brainfart. Taiwan-made doesnt bother me with certain tools.

Bk, is that related to the becker knives?

Nope. I worked with four Kurts and a Curt, and I’m 6’6” tall, so I was Big Kurt. And I like the number 13.
