The Dowidat family were the founders of Geodore, but (to quote from the company history....

GEDORE in Remscheid was largely spared from war damage. It was thus possible to start production to a small extent soon after the end of the war. Profound differences in opinions between the two brothers Otto and Willi Dowidat brought about the splitting off in 1949 of the GEDORE factory under its sole owner Otto Dowidat and the Dowidat factory under Willi Dowidat. The third brother Karl had died in 1933.

Is it just me or do Dowidat, Elora and Hazet all look VERY similar?

Note that Hazet is located in Remscheid, the same town where Gedore and Dowidat are/were located. The Hazet company history on their web site is very vague and doesn't fill you in at all on companies they have bought up along the way.

http://www.hazet.de/en/about-hazet/the-company.html

Also note that Elora is also located in Remscheid....

ELORA Werkzeugfabrik GmbH was founded in 1924 and since then is a privately owned company.

Today 230 highly skilled people are employed in the headquarter in Remscheid

Interesting coincidence?

A lot of companies are located in Remscheid - Heyco too also VBW (stahlwille) , Matador, Padre etc. since the steel industry is located there too.

I was hoping you'd chime in Monte! So, it is just merely similarity and no corporate connection? Maybe it's just my untrained eye, but I've always thought Hazet and Elora looked similar, and the Dowidat looks about the same to me.

I don't think they look alike at all.
I've got some combination wrenches from Hazet (two types, one extra-long and one standard), Stahlwille and WGB. If you lay them side by side, you'll see that they are completely different in appearance, including shape, finish, texture. Yes, they have a "German look" about them, but I would'nt say they look alike.

Dowidat produced some excellent designs. They were not only functional, but the design suggested that the tools were meant for professional mechanics. Somehow the "look and feel" just seemed right.

That said, there were also some "dogs in the mix". Case in point -- whitworth tools. I think the Dowidat 220 series of box-end wrenches were one of the best tool designs ever. They fit with the idea of "professional tools". On the other hand, the 12 series of open end wrenches seemed downright "agricultural" in comaprison. It's as though that tool line was made in the "basement" of the factory. You can clearly see the difference in refinement here. These are some of my older Whitworth models and were actually sourced through my MAC vendor back in the day.

Now look at the 12 series open end compared to the much more refined 620's below it. What a difference --

Also the very deep offset 2 series box-ends (of which I only have a few) are superior in fit/finish and represent the utilitatrian "German" professional wrench.

I have a set of Dowidat Deep Offset Standard Combination Wrenches that I purchased at least 25 years ago from a Tool Dealer that sells Stahlwille, Hazet, Koeken tools. They have held up well.

Too bad the Gedore links are dead. Would be nice to know about the Dowidats. I've got a few pieces, all good stuff. Will keep an eye out for more.

Thought you were speaking in some sort of obscure ebonic make-shift tool slang, "I make DO-WID-AT".

Oops.

:lol_hitti:lol:

Cosmik,

Cool spanner!

IIRC, there was a dispute between the Gedore brothers and as a result, Dowidat decided to create his own line of tools. Dowidat built up a wall within the existing Gedore factory and made his half. The Dowidat line up of hand tools was reputed to be fairly well-rounded.

a Dowidat 3/4" fine rat head. ;)

and it's a 3/4" stubby to boot! The Teeny Turner next to it looks even cuter. :D

Sounds just like what happened with Adidas and his cousin splitting off and starting Puma

Interesting; never knew that.

Here's my only contribution.....just two, boring, measly spanners:
