I'm not overly impressed with mine. It's okay, but not great. 6 wrenches in the bigger package: 3 ratcheting, 3 standard (10mm, 12mm, & 13mm). Who needs two of each size of wrench?!

There's also an Armstrong 7/32" wrench in the smaller bag.

Anyone want to trade?!?
Of course you need two of each size, how the hell else do you get nuts off bolts?

That said, looks like checkout line junk - it's msrp was never 40 bucks, it just said 40 dollar value - looks like (maybe) a ten dollar value to me, if you go on honesty and not msrp. So they threw in the armstrong to keep complaints down.

Wondering the same.

looks like it might be a junk lottery, where you lose money, but one guy gets a great haul to show us to keep people playing again.

Wow, the price listed on their web site is now $9999.99. That would have to be quite a mystery box. Maybe a tractor?

I got the $40 wrench set and one of the small Bessey clamps which were $1.20 on clearance at Lowe's. So I guess they made enough profit off me to spoil the rest of you. You're welcome.

Pretty weak showing, I sure won't be participating in this again. Worth a shot, fun while the suspense lasted.

yep... shafted... congratulations to the dopes who put this on. they made a quick buck and won't get a dime more lol.

not to mention my package was torn in the corner, so if there was something else it fell out... like i had mentioned before, shipping heavy items in an envelope is a bad idea. corner was pretty much gone on this thing

got the same thing that 6 piece wrench set that was selling for 10 bucks a week ago, a bessey clamp, and 2 disinfecting wipes... awesome, i guess since they saw the "40 dollar value!" in the corner they figured an idiot would think they made out like a bandit. lol

I'm going to do this same thing. I'm going to take all of my extra CMan RP wrenches, package them individually, and mark "$100 value!" on each one. Is it too late to file a Paypal claim?

180 days to make a claim with paypal

i'll be honest, i opened a claim. i don't mind getting 40 dollars of junk, its still 40 dollars of junk i could find a spot for. but getting 12 dollars worth of stuff for 20 bucks is dumb, they can keep it for that price. all they had to do was do what they claimed, make the value between 40-200. i doubt anything they put in a package was valued at 200 bucks. hell i could claim half the **** i own was 50-60% more valuable than it is if i quoted grainger for prices!

can't wait for people to drop 45 on their "mystery power tool" one. so they can receive the little 8v screwdriver sets that cost 20 bucks normally, or a harbor freight drill set that costs 25.

By chance do the packages have a return address on them ? Any chance that they were sent from Chicago ?
Wouldn't it be North Carolina?

From their website:
"We are based in NC and collect tools from various sources including liquidations, clearance sales and many other places."

Plus, from the OP:
I found this flyer today on the bulletin board at the range.

I think they did do what they said they would. The normal sale price for that wrench set is $39.99. You can get it for a lot less now but I'm not really sure you can put that on them.

I would imagine the average person who doesnt belong to a deals forum would think they are getting a pretty good deal, but given some of the deals provided here it will be a tough crowd to please.

No ****!:lol_hitti

For $20, you know they're making a profit, and for the $40-200 claim they'd go off of list price. I hope no one actually thought they'd get some amazing deal on anything worthwhile in this...

Next time that $20 is burning a hole in your pocket, throw it at HJE, Cripe, Trident, etc.

From what is pictured, you can bet the person is a member here or at least slickdeals. Given that it was 20 or less he's making what 1-10 bucks after shipping each one.

Member here, yeah maybe. That's why I was wondering if they came from the Chicago area.

I was thinking that if you're looking to make money, a $20 tool thingy isn't going to have the broadest appeal. And that offering a $40-$200 value in "brand name" tools for $20 is a big discount to offer (50-90%), so whoever is doing this probably has some inside track on cheap tools. Stuff bought in bulk, factory seconds, liquidating old stock etc. After all, most tools don't really cost all that much to make and if you cut out the middlemen you can offer deep discounts. The "mystery" thing would be a nicer marketing gimmick than just selling some more of something a lot of people already have on ebay or what have you.

If someone is doing this and wants to make it a successful business venture, there needs to be some plan as to how to make a profit and sustain long term success.

Instead, with the $5 off promo, I paid $14 plus $5 shipping and got a collection of stuff that couple be purchased at the local big box stores in the closeout bins for $11.19 plus tax, which we'll call 7% for NC. That makes it $11.97 total. The envelope said shipping was $5.05, leaving $1.98 in to pay for expenses like gas and the website, leaving the rest as profit. Even if that stuff is free that's well below minimum wage for the time it would take for just my order. It would seem to be a losing proposition.

I expected someone with something they knew they could use to make money. What we got was someone with nothing. I'm kinda shocked they feel good enough about how round one went to try for round two. Seems like the only ones really making money are the big box stores where they're buying this junk.

I think some of you may be reading too much into this. I seriously doubt that these mystery boxes (envelopes) are the sole form of revenue for this guy's business. I'd bet the stuff coming in these is dead stock from a larger tool business, and this is simply a clever angle on liquidating stock that isn't moving. As many have mentioned, I doubt there's much, if any, profit in this. More likely a way to recoup some amount of investment on tools that aren't otherwise selling.

its pretty ignorant to assume that we all think you put in 20 and get out 200. this isn't the lottery and the advertisement was value between 40-200. lottery tickets will tell you the odds on the back of winning, the odds of getting at least 40 worth of tools was 100% on this. he stated he bought them super cheap at liquidation prices so it was possible.

his description stated he purchases liquidation and closeout type sales, etc. which means buying in bulk at a low price. if this was true he would be able to purchase things at close to 10-20% of their real value.

a lot of people could easily put together a list of tools from different sources that equal up to 40 dollars and include more than a 2 dollar clamp and a 10 dollar wrench set. realistically this can be done without buying liquidation and closeout.

it's not rocket science why he has so far sent multiples of the same items totaling far less than 40 dollars worth retail (not even sale pricing) while picturing things like mag lights and dewalt bits on the website. its the basic bait and switch.

in reality this COULD be done fairly well if the person took care to actually have a good source of cheap tools that can be purchased at a low price and then actually price things accordingly based on average store prices in the last few months, give those things that are priced accordingly a nominal value, and then have the people putting orders together grab items and package them together in bundles equaling at least 40.

that is an ideal type of scenario where the guy was worried about having repeat business, instead he just tries to make as much as possible in one shot. it's a poor business model and i hope more people don't let him just take their money and run, get a refund, make him pay for shipping, and maybe next time he will do what he advertised and put at least 40 worth of tools in the box.

If he isn't capable of doing that, then he shouldn't advertise that. That's the bottom line. :dunno:

the flyer came from a local gun range of a member. i doubt he has connections with large tool companies.

  • Regular price <strike>$39.99</strike>
  • Your savings - $30.00
:dunno:

if you can buy it retail for 10 bucks, how is he not able to get it even cheaper at "liquidation"? do you want to quote grainger for a price instead? i hear they are a good retail pricing option. maybe we should just price all milwaukee sets that say "$240 value!!" well above the actual value and sell them as a "deal". does that mean you should expect to pay 240 at all times?

we all know what its actual pricing is even without the sales that go on

Please tell me you don't actually believe that $39.99 is the regular price on those.
It's the regular price because they say it's the regular price.

If this is really the excuse for the $40-200 range, then it's complete garbage
It's not an excuse, it's fact.
It's just sales hype.
If you consider that garbage, fine.

I had a feeling this would be the case, which is why I refrained from buying in.
Why did you have this feeling ?
Is it because even though you are raging against it, you knew they would base their prices off the regular price ?

Here's how it works, according to one industry consultant describing an actual sweater sold at a major retailer. A supplier sells the sweater to a retailer for roughly $14.50. The suggested retail price is $50, which gives the retailer a roughly 70% markup. A few sweaters sell at that price, but more sell at the first markdown of $44.99, and the bulk sell at the final discount price of $21.99. That produces an average unit retail price of $28 and gives the store about a 45% gross margin on the product.
Retailers didn't always price this way. It used to be that most items were sold at full price, with a limited number of sales to clear unsold inventory. That began to change in the 1970s and 1980s, when a rash of store openings intensified competition and forced retailers to look for new ways to stand out.

I suppose the regular price for this hose reel is $309? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002LQ7WKM/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?qid=1420944533&sr=8-8&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

Despite it never, ever being sold for that price on Amazon.

you'll never convince him, retailer love people like him, they spend more 100% of the time thinking they are saving big moola every time. this is what i expected would happen, but the person who ran the mysterytoolenvelope.com grossly mis-used the tactic and took it as the item has that literal value all the time.

Lots of things have a "regular price" or "list price" that seem way too high. I'm not saying they don't actually sell for that price somewhere at sometime, but not often. Mostly they are "on sale" somewhere. Like the Gearwrench tapered reamer:

Regular price $83.70. Really?

I still don't have any sort of tracking info. I'll give it one more week and then file a dispute with my credit card.

As previously noted, no tracking info for me either. They say on their website that things should ship out by 1/12...which is today. I'm giving it till the end of the week then opening a Paypal dispute.
