I've been debating where to start this thread over the last day or so. I've decided to put it here in Free parking yet I might merge it with my Garage Refurb thread as it will be an extension of the garage.

Since I have finally got back to racing this past Summer, the wife, with her blessing, told me to get the enclosed trailer that I have been thinking about for a past few years. I've gone back and forth on size, tag or gooseneck. I've been going through layouts, set ups and other things in my mind for a while.

In the end, I went with a 28' tag. Then I had to decide what brand I wanted after I made the decision to buy new over used. I checked out two dealer and found that Majestic Trailer in Akron was giving me a better deal than another United dealer.

So here we have it, a 2017 United UXT, charcoal gray and 28' long. It's bare inside as I have my own plans on finishing the interior. I optioned for a 30 amp electric service, spare tire well in the floor, white celing/walls. One of the options I choose and part of the reason I chose United was for the rear wing.

For starters, this is what I had been using, my 16' open trailer.

I pulled into the driveway with this setup on Friday afternoon.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I thought I had plenty of driveway until I pulled in with the truck and trailer. A 28' is longer than I thought and I optioned for a foot longer tongue too.

I also spec'ed out an RV latch for the 48" man door. However, United wouldn't do just the RV latch and delete the bar lock on the door. I had to upgrade to double 24" doors, which I really like.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I think deleting the bar lock gives for a cleaner appearance.

Then you may notice the rear wing. This is something I believe United started doing in the last couple of years. I'm not sure how many other manufacturer's are doing it but I "wanted" it on my trailer.

The Sun was in the wrong place to get a better picture. This is an 12" rear extension with some braces to hold up the rear wing. Youo might also notice the two LED loading lights mounted under the rear wing.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

LIke I mentioned, this project has been going on in my head for awhile. I make changes inmy head and work through the entire project and layout, changing stuff around, much like I have with the Garage Refurb.

One of the items I wanted to install was a tool box. I already had my 26" Cman top box and picked up a intermediate box in hopes of grabbing a bottom box to match. As the Cman boxes started to decline, I decide to go with a HF 44" box. So I picked one up at the parking lot sale last month.

Then I started pulling drawers out.

and sanding drawers.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I set up a system, wet sand, wipre off, clean with lacquer thinner, prime a few spots and then hit the fronts with some Rustoleum charcoal to match the Cman top box.

As the first coat would dry, I would grab another drawer and start the process over letting the others dry in the Sun.

After the second drawer, I had an Oh **** moment when the wind knocked one of the drawers over. I had to touch up the scratched paint.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

Once they had the second coat, I moved thenm over to my open trailer for drying in the Sun.
1471896834.jpg

Once I was done painting all of them, I moved them inside for the night. I had a drawerless box for the time being.
1471896742.jpg
After a day or so of drying, I put the drawers back in.
1471967182.jpg

I pulled the HF US General tag and it should match the Cman boxes. Yet, now I'm thinking it will be over kill and I probably won't need all three boxes. :dunno:

That's a ton of trailer! I did notice the overhang, thought it was kind of neat. Please continue to document the inside changes you make.

Funny how you bought the toolbox and immediately went to work on it. I was raised to keep my toys in good condition and have fought this mentally for years. Only recently would I be able to say - "I bought this with money, if I mess it up it can be replaced with time or money". Nice job on the drawers :)

Nice trailer for sure, 28' is definitely a long trailer when using a bumper pull. I am sure you will figure out the best approach to the yard, then it will be easier to deal with.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

Actually my wife and I were teetering between a RV and a cottage. We put a deposit on a RV and when I came home and measured in spite of a long enough driveway I suspected I would never be able to back it into our suburban home. We ended up with the cottage and ironically, lots of place to store a RV :)

I agree, it takes some time to work out a 'system' and make the necessary changes to accommodate.

This will be fun to watch. And I got a kick out if your comment about the length. I have a 28ft v nose and man is it a monster for a tail dragger. When it got delivered I thought oh ****, I might of gone a littler overboard. But it sure is nice having that extra room up front.

So what does the tail extension do for you?

Nutts: i LOVE the trailer and not sure how much fun a 28 footer would be driving around here. i was pulling a 6 by 12 footer yesterday across half the state and had to be careful on skinny roads and dead ends. and of course with all the Yahoo's that are driving on them.

in any case if you are able and that works a lot better for your car and weekend fun i'm here to watch and see how you outfit it. I really like the double 24 inch doors and are they pretty secure?

good luck with all the upgrades and of course your racing.

Looks great, not having the lock bar on the side door is a nice look, but you do realize those RV door latches are virtually worthless when it comes to keeping any thieves out.

I might have missed it but is it dual axle electric brakes? 7 pin plug?

Any reason you didn't opt for V Nose? I have never liked the idea of pulling a "wall" through the air.

I can't tell from the pics but keep an eye on the Aluminum/Tin lip at the bottom of the door jam. Ours will bend just barely stepping on it.

Jeez Eric, you think something to death just like me.,:lol_hitti which is why I'm still not done with the inside of my garage after 6 years. I want it to be right without redoing it later. That's a very nice trailer. Are you going to put an AC/Heat unit on the top?

IMHO, the HF box is cheap enough that I can try a few things out, without really getting hurt on it. In case of emergency, I could paint it black to match my other boxes.

If there's no other cars in the driveway when I pull in, I think I'll be ok. Judging the distance at the back might be an issue. I'd ratehr get out a few times to make sure I'm good rather than back into something.

I think it'll work out ok. Where it sits right now, I believe I can easily pull into the regularly open bay of the garage.

I like the HF boxes better than Craftsman.

I'd agree, the HF box for the money is a lot better than the modern Cman boxes.

If/when you do back into something every one of us with a trailer is here for the virtual hug. The first weekend I had my new trailer I tapped the light with the old trailer and broke the lens. I needed a hug until I could get to the trailer parts store and get a replacement!

It's been on my list for a long time. I had to get the car back together first. No reason to buy a trailer and let it sit. :lol_hitti

So what does the tail extension do for you?

By my thoughts, the rear wing should help with the air flow over the back of the trailer helping in increasing mileage...probably wishful thinking. It will help keep the rain off the seal at the top of the back door and does give a place for the LED loading lights. Best of all, even if it does nothing, it was just the look I liked and worth the $250 (ballpark) that I wanted.

It should make racing alot easier as I can leave some stuff loaded up and not have to empty the truck and trailer when I get home.

Shhhhh watch saying golf cart, the wife wants one but it's not in the cards right now. The "paid for" Yamaha Timberwolf will have to do for now.

Thank you
Love what you did with the HF box.

Subbed to see what you do.

I probably have less than $12-15 in the upgrade paint.

Yeah, that is a concern but if they want in bad enough, they can get in. Even with bar/cam locks and a high dollar pad lock, a generator door would be easy to pry open.

Yes, brakes on both axles and 7 pin plug. My truck has the brake controller built inwhich makes it nice also.

As for the V-nose, I have read alot of guys say they don't help much with the mileage as there isn't much trailer above the truck pulling it. It also creates and odd bench area in the front of the trailer too. Basically, it wasn't something I was really interested in.

Jeez Eric, you think something to death just like me.,:lol_hitti which is why I'm still not done with the inside of my garage after 6 years. I want it to be right without redoing it later. That's a very nice trailer. Are you going to put an AC/Heat unit on the top?

Thanks, Hopefully my trailer won't take me 6 years. I'll probably spring for an AC unit next year. Hopefully, I can pick one up on sale over the Winter. The front vent is braced and wired for future AC. The heat, I'll get a little buddy type heater with built in O2 sensor. My thoughts right now are to mount a 20lb cylinder on the tongue that can be used for double duty, heating/cooking. I haven't got that far though.

What a great looking trailer and the loading lights are a great idea.

Thanks Simon.

I already know the feeling. I have bumped stuff with my open trailer. I actually mounted the license plate on a hinge so it'll swing back and forth and keep from getting all bent to ****.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I picked up some steel plates to mount underneath and help spread the weight of the hold downs. They're about the right size as purchased.

I wire brushed them today.

Then painted them with POR15 front and back.

...yeah the old open trailer is looking rough.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I added Maxx Air covers to both vents. Once I get an AC unit, the front Maxx Air cover will become a spare for the back.

Brand new one piece aluminum roof was bright, even with sunglasses on. This is the back vent.

I had to drill through the vents and bolt the brackets on. Once those are bolted on, the coves are bolted on to the brackets. That is factory applied sealant. Looks like it is guaranteed not to leak.

Front cover mounted in place...notice teh cardboard I was sitting on. Not only was teh aluminum roof bright, it was a lil warm too.

Kinda hard to see with the neighbors tree in the back ground but both of the covers are on. I thought black would look better than white on a charcoal trailer.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I'll end with a few pictures of the bare interior. The white box is a marine grade battery and vent.

Looking at the back, nothing fancy here.

In case you're wondering, the door in the floor is a spare tire well. I know some guys don't like the spares in the floor. Incase they need the spare, they have to back the car out to get it. My thoughts, the rarity of needing the spare is worth not having it somewhere in the way... mounted on the tongue or the bed of the truck.

The one issue that I completely missed. The electric, I was fine with where the box is, actually preferred to be slightly forward a bit. I completely forgot about the shore power cable and it's access hole in the floor. This is right where I was planning on mounting the HF box. I think I have it solved and can reroute it to a little less intrusive area.

NUTTS: maybe you can move the electrical or take it back to factory and maybe they'll move it for you for a small charge or free? that said i hope you can work around it if you keep it as is.

I really like the spare under the floor and your thinking is very solid in my opinion. i'd like to mount a spare under my floor in my next 5x10 aluminum utility trailer i'm going to have built. great idea.

I also agree that if somebody wants to get in an enclosed trailer a door lock or bar probably won't stop them. i did give some steel to a neighbor to make a bar type lock to go across and padlock on my shop door so the weakest link probably is the padlock. i'll post up pictures of it if you might want to see what it is if you ask.

keep posting up pictures and keep practicing driving that long beast around so you get the hang of it.

I think the electrical will have an easy solution that will work and look ok too. Hopefully I will get to that tomorrow.

I had a bit of a stupid attack yesterday trying to take a few screws out of the interior. I thought they were a torx bit and never thought any different. I grabbed a T25, nope too big. So I walked back in the garage, grab a T20 and it was too small. So now I'm thinking what the heck. I know there's a T27 and it has me thinking this might be a T23 ? :dunno: Maybe it's not common as to keep the everyday person from messing with them.

I worked on a few more things, went in the house to do some Google research. Then I learn the screws are a double square bit and it still doesn't click. I look for a double square bit online and find an Octidrive bit. Wow, going to have to order it. I start checking out some screws on Ebay, possibly to have some spares while I'm working on the interior. Then I see it and the light bulb comes on.....double square.... square drive, yeah I have plenty of them. OMG, I felt like an idiot and told the wife about it. We had a good laugh on my brain fart. ;)

Yeah that guy is a crotchty *******. I've dealt with him before. He got really pissed when some of that firewood got stolen a few years back.
