Re: Nutts Trailer project

I began the day running to Menard's to pick up a few items to have on hand before I started mixing the RockSolid kit. I came home opened the trailer and started to mask the edges and doors.

Even masked around the spare tire well so I didn't slop anything in it. The cover is in the garage so I can do it in there along with the flap for the ramp door.

Yes, I used some barrier tape to try to prevent the stray person from stepping inside.

I went to Sherwin Williams and got the wall paint. Wanted a tough super glossy paint. They recommend this industrial enamel. So far it looks really good.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I started to roll it on in the front after trimming around the edges. I did the first four feet and spread out some flakes. As I started trimming the edges of the next four feet, I saw the plywood was completely soaking up the epoxy. . . uh-oh. I rolled a bit more across the thin spots and tossed a few more flakes.

Since the screw heads were a slight pita, I went ahead and brushed some over those prior to rolling on the epoxy. The 2.5 car garage kit I bought had two sets of mix and the first pouch got me to 17' or so. I knew this was going to be an issue.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I mixed the second set and started on the back half of the trailer. I knew at this point, I was not going to have enough to do my entire trailer. My plan at this point was to finish the trailer floor, go in the garage, do the spare tire well cover and ramp door flap. I had enough to do that today.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

So the kit that claimed to cover 450-500 sq ft covered this much, plus the ramp flap.

Now that all the epoxy was used and I saw what I have, to say the least, I'm not happy and you could probably say more like frankly pissed. As it dried, it got worse. This is a sample of what all of it looks like, thin and complete **** in my book.

Granted, the wood is going to soak more than concrete, I'd guess. By my measurements, 8'x28' = 224 sq ft + 8'x 2.5' = 20 sq ft for a total of 244 sq ft from a kit that claimed coverage of twice that. Once you figure in the ramp door, 8' x 6.5' = 52 sq ft that is still under 300 sq ft. I would have though the extra squer foot coverage that the kit claimed would have been plenty to do what I needed.

Maybe I'm wrong on that but, I know I'm right on this....

I should have went with one of the vendors in the Flooring Section that are more than willing to help out the membership here.

BTW, I guess I'll be going back to Menard's tomorrow to buy another 2.5 car kit to finish the ramp door and get a "second coat" on the trailer floor.

It will be very interesting to see how much further the second coat will go.

My thoughts as well Mike.

I decided to forego the clear top coat as I'll take it back to assist in paying for the second 2.5 car kit. I was leery of using a clear on it since the trailer will probably flex somewhat going down the road. I thought it might crack/shatter the clear coat and look like **** anyways.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

Would using a primer or a water sealer on the wood have made a difference?

Not sure, I had considered rolling a coat of Kilz on it prior but didn't. I would have thought Rustoleum in the emails, would have suggested something like that or gave warning of the wood completely soaking it up.

Sherwin Williams recommended no primer under the epoxy I used. Mine doesn't show the wood like yours I just wish it was thicker.

On the plus side the finish will be way thicker once you do the second coat than any surface job on concrete.

I wouldnt be too pissed, that epoxy acted just like stain. That would use tons of product, im surprised you even got the whole inner floor done first coat

Rustoleum didn't mention it either, I figured the type of product it was, it would seal somewhat better and not show the wood. If I had known what i was going to end up with I would have went with another product.

I took the clear kit back this morning and grabbed another 2.5 car kit. Then I realized I didn't have another roller frame and had to go to town for them. I'm just glad I caught that before I started mixing the Rocksolid.

I mixed the first set of components and rolled the first coat for the ramp door. Then went in the garage, did the spare tire well cover and flap. It went on fine and looked decent after the flakes went on. I was about half way through the mix and went back to the trailer. I started at the front and worked my way back to the middle of the axles, spreading more flakes as I went.

I'm going to let the ramp door dry a bit, do a few other things like remow the side yard and cut out some tiles for the spare tire well. Hopefully after a few hours, it'll be dry enough that I can get a second coat on that and finish up rest of the trailer floor.

I'll snap some pics this evening or later. I will admit, after the second coat, it is covering alot better. This is the coverage I expected in the first place. I guess you get what you pay for.

If you had used primer, it would have been the wrong one. Back in the day I thought using Tremclad as a primer on auto body work was a good idea. Both the filler and the paint I was using caused it to lift.

At least now you've only bought twice as much top coat as you thought you needed and wasted a few flakes...

Well, I must admit the floor is done and it does look alot better. I think it still has some issues but I'll look at it more once it gets a chance to fully dry after a day or so.

The second coat way better than the first coat. Here's the spare tire well cover. This photo taken 90 degrees to the last picture of it I posted.

The flap for the rear door.

Looking in the side door.

Looking in the back with the ramp door done with two coats.

The masking tape did pull some of the black off the wheel wells that I'll have to touch up along with a little touch up elsewhere.

Thank you and the wife generally rolls her eyes and shakes her head when I do that kind of stuff.

Those marks only took about two seconds and never really created any smoke.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

So as life gets in the way and things happen, it puts me farther behind. Not that it matters much right now as Wednesday night, I broke the transmission in the car. It won't be a cheap or fast fix so looks like I won't even get to use the trailer this year.

I decided to add some tiles to the spare tire well. I felt it would help protect the paint and if any moisture gets inside, the spare won't be laying directly in the well. I'm hoping it will get some ventilation under it.

I chose these from Home Dept, 18"x18" and they are sold in packs of four, perfect for what I needed. They aren't made in the USA but Canada, so I figure that's the next best thing.

The four pieces snapped together and I marked them with silver Sharpie. Not just to cut them to size.

Being hard plastic, I thought for a moment how to cut them and with what. Then I realized I think I have the perfect thing....

Re: Nutts Trailer project

Once I cut them, I snapped them back together and flopped them into the spare tire well, works for me.

1474552666.jpg

I put the flap on the ramp door and added the trim back on the well. Once the trim was on, I slide the cover on and put the screws back in the hinge.

1474557279.jpg

On the right, is the pull tab that came with the trailer. I thought it was a bit large so I opted to buy a smaller tie and use that for the pull tab.

Bolted the tie downs in today and did a few other things in the garage. Since my arms aren't long enough to hold both the wrench and impact, I had to get a little creative.

It did but I could only do one at a time. Which was ok as I used lock nuts underneath and when they were tight, I added a second lock nut on them . . . . just in case.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

I had some other stuff to do today and it did rain a bunch earlier so I didn't get much done today. I'm putting a piece of plywood on the tongue and it will be covered with aluminum diamond plate but I want to make sure it has paint underneath that. So after I put the second coat on the top of that and had the brush out, I touched a few things up. If you look at the spare tire well above, you'll notice some epoxy got under the tape. I painted over that and also I lost some paint on the wheel wells when the tape was pulled off.

I did swap out the regular T8s for LEDS.

Re: Nutts Trailer project

Well, I thought I was goin gto make a run to Indiana and pick up my cabinets and other items but I was wrong. The builder told me he had some issues so I won't be able to go until he calls me back. . . .

I need to get the cabinets in so I can figure out where everything else is going. I cut a sheet of plywood to fit on the top of the HF 44" box. I'm going to cover that with aluminum like the countertop is the plan. For now, the plywood is now black as I gave it a coat of paint.

The plan is to mount the lil Wilton vise in this corner as it will swivel off the end if need be. Some of you might remember the vise from the hoarder house that I helped clean out. I took it apart, cleaned it and gave it a coat of Rustoleum Hammered Silver.

AAAAAARGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

This drives me crazy. My cabinet guy called today and they are done, but's raining. It hasn't rained all Summer and now it's going to be like 5 days straight that it has rained before I can pick them up. One of the other places I have to stop is closed Saturday and Sunday but the second one is open on Sunday. The third one is closed Sunday and Monday. I can't catch a break here and it's probably going to be Tuesday before I can go, lining everything up. People wonder why it takes me so long to get stuff done sometimes. . . . well here it is, going to be a week of literally getting nothing done.

Sorry for the rant but I needed to vent.

Sorry but I have to do this:

Why don't you use your enclosed trailer to go get the cabinets?

I had to do it...will this get me banned???

Don't you love it how things work out. I hauled in 19 loads of screened black dirt to edge my new driveway, put down 100 lbs of grass seed and then we get rain for about 2 weeks straight. I mean like 2 inches in a hour rain. So wet I can't even fix the wash out areas.

And now that it is going to be dry for the next few days I will be ******* at my desk job...

No, that won't get you banned, lol. I had considered it but I don't need 28 feet of trailer to go get 8 feet worth of stuff. The cabinets could be covered in plastic, shrink wrapped and probably be ok. The sofa is what really concerns me. I'm also picking up some 4x8 sheets of aluminum diamond plate and some other odds and ends.

Fortunately, a friend called another friend that has a 12' enclosed trailer that I can use. Awesome. After I make a trip home in the morning, I'll go get the trailer and I can head out.

Since I'm slightly held up, I decided how I wanted to organize the tools in the HF box. I started to fab up a tray for the ratchets and extensions.

It's primed and painted but didn't get a picture. I also made a divider to go in the screwdriver drawer.

After a coat of paint, I stuck it in the top drawer last night. I still need to grab a can of spray in bedliner for the inside.

Also picked up my cabinet fronts and some other supplies after a long *** aggravating day on the road.

alumnium diamond plate (tongue and ramp flap covering) and white sheet metal (for the cabinet sides)

Just say you did that on purpose to create depth. Looks great, the flake bleed through adds to the look.
