...a WOK chef.….then he will be able to cook wassages, weggs, woodles, wamburgers and all those others...wordage?maybe
Lol. :lol_hitti

That's funny
I giggled and tried coming up with more but he got all the needed basics

Yep, I got a short stand with a burner and a tall stand with a burner. I just need to plan to use it cause I keep delegating my time to other things besides cooking. Also we been working on eating healthier, so I need to really study some recipes and see about making it healthier! First step is to not use all of the butter/fat I would of used. :lol_hitti
You're thinking of it sort of backwards .... Most things meat that we eat composed up of vegetables, water, vitamins and minerals. All good things wrapped up into a tasty, meaty package. The animal has taken all that stuff and turned it into something WAY more delicious than the individual ingredients. So you see there is no need to eat salads and other fluff unless you intend to be someone's lunch one day :headscrat

JBL: Even though it's cold, snow and the wind is blowing it still looks like you are very busy. AND eating more than a little. How are you heating that wok cause I don't see any propane hoses or is everything hidden under that big old Wok (isn't that an old blade off a tractor attachment for tilling soil?).

That auction brings back memories and happy for you that you not only made time to attend, but helped make it successful. My 3 youngest went to a local Christian school from kindergarten through high school (ALL ONE BUILDING) and my bride was in charge of wrapping all the items into gift baskets so they'd sell for a bit more and be great gifts. She also ran the entire auction a few of those years so the auction was a fun (and busy) night and also a relief after it was over that we'd get our life back for a bit (sort of).

Stay warm and hope the weather gets better soon.

Cheers
Always busy Drives !!! And always eating more than I should I guess :wtf:

The Wok is made from a worn out blade on our tillage disc.

We partook in the Snowball event for the school last year and had a blast. It's a fun way for the school to raise money and it's a fun night out as well !!

Where does your dad get his display cases for his 1/64th? My case maker guy just retired this year before I could order my next one.
The smartass in me wants to say he mostly gets them out of the woods behind his house. The plexiglass doors came from Menards though :lol_hitti

Be builds them in his wood shop at home. Solid Red Oak other than a Oak veneer plywood back. No one sees that though as it's up against a wall

Oh do not fear, I'm not cutting meat out! Just cutting back some. For some reason the doctor said veggies are better for me and I need to add more :headscrat. He even gave me a clean bill of health after the blood work came back, just need to loose weight.

Which is odd cause I love veggies when it's around a big piece of meat! one of my favorite meal is cabbage cooked with bacon, onion, and red crush pepper served with neck bones and a fresh hot pan of cornbread!!

Now I'm hungry.....

Dad has been working on cleaning out all the pens in the barn over the last few days and looking at the daylight left today decided this one would have to wait until tomorrow. We threw a bale of corn straw in there to keep them dry overnight as things were getting kind of crappy :lol_hitti
49437240237_19c2785520_z.jpg

Rawr Rawr tear that bale up Bob-the-Cat !!
49436543643_ecc2631e8a_z.jpg

While cleaning pen 5 Dad got after the GIANT ice pile by the waterer.
49436543978_e17e0a1392_z.jpg

These bale forks sure do make for great ice removal tools :bounce:
49436543808_46689c1946_z.jpg

By the time he was done there was two full buckets of ice chunks and "other" stuff he loaded up.
49436544078_a07067a425_z.jpg

About lunch time we decided to go to town and get the needed supplies for the next chicken flock. The good ol' farm truck needed a little encouragement to get going :headscrat
49436543188_dc5ddd50c8_z.jpg

We stopped and got a few pieces of steel as long as we were in town. I plan to copy what red caddy did in his shop (<-it's a link, click on it for his thread) and install some pieces of square tubing in the floor to be used as "receivers" for different things. Bench grinders, vises, tubing bender, pipe thread cutter and maybe even a small welding table on a stand. I don't know what I'll for sure do with them as I do not have something like this currently but it seems like a good idea that I can grow into :dunno:
49437240977_9c87274dd9_z.jpg

Once Leo and I got everything squared away in the shop we went in the house and he "helped" me start prepping my tax stuff from last year. With a sharpie in one hand and a sucker in the other he couldn't be more helpful :bounce:
49436544183_5b9d69c3a5_z.jpg

After chores not long ago this evening I decided to put together a foam model of the shop to figure out where to place things. Although I like using 3D modeling stuff on the computer sometimes you just can't beat going with an old school foam board. This is what I have done so far. Large overhead doors will be on the right (East) side of the building with a couple unplaced man doors scattered around somewhere.

JBL: looks like you're still getting IT done and hope the warmer weather shows up soon for you Dad and the family.

you're pretty brave letting Leo have a SHARPIE, but I guess you probably own some sandpaper or a grinder to get it off if he misses the box or paper.

in case you might want to build a stand to put some grinders on here's one a member built that I like a lot. there are more pics of it and other hitch mounted type stands and members have made in this thread i started about 5 or so years ago in the fabrication section called vise and grinder stands.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799

are you planning on putting any eye bolts in the floor of your new building maybe with covers over them so you use later to bend something straight if you need to?

have a great weekend!!

it'd be nice to use the receiver as both a stand and a hold down. put a piece of bar across the bottom and cut out some 1/2" plate as a long hook to snag it. never hurts to have the ability to use the slab to hold some god forsaken piece of metal you've been fighting with at harvest.

That's not a bad idea ....

I plan to space the receivers in places where they can nicely act as a chop saw outfeed table and a support to hold a long pipe while threading one end and other things that I'll probably only use once a year but HEY they'll be there :bounce:

then again you could just put some chain pots in. they're really not that expensive. https://www.autobodytoolmart.com/champ-floor-anchor-pot-1600-p-11538.aspx

hell you could just make your own and use their lids

Annnnnd more interesting possibilities. I think Dad and I talked through a decent plan for placement of the receiver pots in the floor. I think I'm going to end up building 10-12 of them total. We shall see though as I'm sure that'll change again :lol_hitti

Sunday funday !!! Last time I piled snow up I made a sledding hill for the kiddos and a vertical wall so we could dig a tunnel. I failed to get any in progress or completed pics but they got the tunnel through (with a little help) and managed to mangle the rest of the snow piles pretty good !!! It was a successful day !!
49457173298_978f797f27_z.jpg

They wanted a ride in the sled and after I fell over a few times because it's quite slippery around here I decided to use the 4-wheeler to pull them around. Good grief I couldn't get them to come out of that sled !! Leo flat out cried when I said it was time to be done. Their cheeks were rosy red and it was time to go in but he wanted more !!
49457880722_fab7f1b38f_z.jpg

Saturday morning Dad and I got the chicken barn ready for the next peep show.
49457173243_1d1002ff76_z.jpg

Yup and they sure do taste good !!!
49457879997_c275822894_z.jpg

I sure am grateful that I have neighbors and a father that are willing to help get the little chicks settled in the barn each flock. Two of the neighbors and Dad have helped for every single flock so far :)
49457646411_905f42ea7b_z.jpg

A combination of it being HOT in the barn and the little clucker wiggling made for a blurry picture but they sure are cute when they're little :lol_hitti
49457646481_480c037b08_z.jpg

Last night I decided to start on the receiver tubes for the shop floor. I used the cut off chunk from the 5510 Deere drawbar as an anvil/bending deal for the rebar pieces. See, never throw anything away. You'll never know when it'll come in handy :bounce:
49457646531_abe9ba7111_z.jpg

All pieces bent and assembled.
49457646616_836ea98a85_z.jpg

Weld'er'up !!! I think it turned out okay. I still have to put an angle iron ring around the outside so the little cover plate will sit flush. Not sure how to describe that properly so I'll make it and show you one day soon.

Leo: remeber the time Dad would build us a mountain of snow and a snow cave. Then he would pull us around for miles in the sled. Ah those were the good old days!
Great work Dad!

**** with that design i'd weld a big 1" thread nut on the bottom. could secure up anything being held in there and work as the hold down.

Mike, I see in the background of an outdoor photo some round bales of hay with snow on top. Don't you usually have to store that inside? Won't the moisture ruin them? In the past I have seen round bales wrapped in white plastic but again I don't come across bales of hay that often. :wtf:
Looks like Leo likes helping his dad...

Our neighbor here has a pile of round bales all stacked out in the open with snow on them. But I'm pretty sure they are straw bales and not hay. Might even be corn straw.

Lol. I have some oddball memories of dumb stuff like that growing up so maybe it'll stick with them.

I think I may do that tonight and see how it turns out !!!

The round bales are corn straw with 3 good solid layers of netwrap so they should be okay outside for a while. The netwrap holds the bale together instead of using conventional twine and helps shed moisture to a point. We will bring them inside this spring once they all thaw out and we've made more room in the hay shed. I don't like leaving bales outside but I do not have enough indoor storage for it all !!!

The bales wrapped in white plastic are usually alfalfa that is being turned into haylage. The plastic wrap keeps oxygen from being available to the product inside and it ferments and turns into silage. During this process sugars turn into acids and the whole works becomes more digestable.

Leo likes doing just about anything outside with us and I'm glad to have him want to follow me around :)

There are very few people around here that put round bales under cover. The thought is that they are round and will shed water and while they do shed water MUCH better than a flat square bale they turn to **** after a few years outside in the elements. We try pretty hard to use all our corn straw bales within two years even if they've been inside the entire time.

Friday afternoon I played musics for the little people at Lily's school for their winter dance/game day. Being as I was just background noise I didn't set up all the speakers and left the lights in the trailer. It was a bunch of LOUD gymnasium fun as was to be expected :bounce:
49475710742_df6590f154_z.jpg

Mama Bear stopped in with our other two little people on their way home so they could have some fun as well and Leo of course started messing with things.
49475007008_dae89fc615_z.jpg

I was talking to another parent for a little while off to the side of the speakers while watching Leo to make sure he didn't get into any trouble and when I turned back around after what seemed like 15 seconds he was in full on DJ position ready to rock !!
49475489426_a5cd79a1b5_z.jpg

Friday after the dance party I decided to try installing Windows 10 onto a Windows 7 machine using the free upgrade tool from Microsoft that was suppose to stop working years ago and guess what ?!?!?!? It worked 100% just fine. Neat.

It must be nice walking into the chicken barn after this weather!
After this weather ? Lol. Did it freeze down there :lol_hitti

I wore a sweatshirt up here today outside. It got up to 39 and WOWSER does it feel warm !!

And yes, it's nice in the barn. The beer taste good in 90° heat lol.

I've been a lurker for a long time and I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your thread.
Sounds like a conversation between a pillow and a nice set of sheets :bounce:

Thanks for following along !! I'll try to post some actually interesting stuff soon. One day (hopefully soon) this thread will turn into a thread about an actual garage and live up to the site name that hosts it

Yesterday we, and by that I mean mostly Mama Bear and I, built a snow castle/fort for the kiddos. We used empty Orbeseal pails to pack the snow into nice bricks. It worked very well and we all had fun :bounce:
49483600971_50825276bf_z.jpg

After we got the walls up Mama Bear and I started tossing snowballs over the walls and the kiddos had a blast trying to defend themselves. For a moment we felt bad for *********** them but then we looked at each other and decided it was payback time for all the sleepless nights and dirty diapers and really let them have it ..... or at least we thought about it and ended up going easy on them instead. One day they'll beat us at our own game and we'll look back and wonder why we held back :lol_hitti

It was apparent that the in floor receiver deals needed to be able to be covered easily so I tried a few things. The first was an attempt to use angle and flat iron to get it done and it sort of looks like **** ....
49494252906_13b6dee136_z.jpg

The second was using a drill bit for the corners and a jigsaw to finish it off. This seemed worse yet ....
49494252971_c533be890a_z.jpg

The third idea is the winner but took the most time. It looks great and will work very well though. An angle grinder with a cut off wheel did the trick.

Now have you figured out how to make those caps easily removable with cold gloved fingers? Need a loop or indent of some kind Id think. Adds a lot more to the fab time, but probably worth it later.

OK, looks like it's time for some powder coating . . .
what color?

wondering if you looked around for any manufactured covers?
like these-

That snow fort should stand up to artillery when it hardens. Great job!

Nice floor covers!
It is hard as a rock now that it's 20F outside !!

The floor covers are a work in progress. I figure spending a little time to get them right is worth it. It'll be a little difficult to change them once they've been mudded in :lol_hitti

I thought about a few different neat and clever things ... then ...

..... I read this. Seems like a good idea. Put one of those crazy strong neodymium magnets on a stick and it'll pull them out pretty well I'd think.

I was thinking gray to blend in actually BUT now that I see the plastic covers I think there may be potential there. Boy that'd save a bunch of time fabbing these things up PLUS there would be no chance they'd ever rust into place. Hmmmmm ........

Your fabrication skills, put me to shame :lol_hitti

But your time is limited.
If there's something that makes it easier & quicker go for it!

I ordered one of those caps to see what it will look like on the finished product. I'm all about saving time where I can and I think that plastic cap will look okay and it should function decently well for its intended purpose.

Most of the things I build in my shop can be done with an angle grinder and a welder. The only addition I have to that is a drill press, vise and a chop saw.

If you do most things function over form that doesn't take long to get it done. When you want to make them function and look nice that's when you need to pull the Garage Journal Bible out and spend four times as much time as necessary on it to make it worthy of being posted on the internet for all to criticize !!

Hi other Mike !!!

The crowd on here is a pretty intense one to try to impress. Not an easy deal. Good thing I don't much care about all that ...... or at least only a little bit :headscrat

I'm good for at least 1 good idea every 65th full moon.
Damn it is a FULL moon tonight !! Usually I wander around between barns while doing chores with a decent sized spotlight to see out here in the PITCH black but tonight it was bright enough it looked like early morning. Kinda eerie ....

Today the wonderful Mama Bear took her Subaru in for an oil change and a couple recall deals and they said her left front tire had an unrepairable sidewall leak and she needed new tires. She called me to see if we wanted new tires and I said HELL NO !!! Off it came to see if I could find it.

What a bunch of morons. This "sidewall leak" sure looks like a damn sheet rock screw to me !!!

Shove a plug in it and we'll see what happens. Good grief. whole new set of tires. I can't believe they were too lazy to find a damn screw in the face of the tire and blamed it on something that sounded like it'd be "unrepairable".

Sorry Mike, it looks like it's hit your neck of the woods.

They're not stupid or lazy they're trying to upsell. :wtf:
Come in for that below cost or "free" oil change so we can talk you into extra **** ya don't need. Like fresh air in your tires. Or new brakes at 10k or new air filter for a sweet c note . . .

I've learnt not to pull into gas/inspection stations that aren't busy cause they will find something that your car has to have to pass inspection.

Just be grateful Mama Bear was smart enough to check with her favorite mechanic.

That is pretty common. Due to 'liability' issues most chain shops won't patch/plug if it is in the outer rib of tread. It is mostly a ploy to sell more tires.

I have done the same thing you just did many times and never had a problem.

I am enjoying your thread and as a side effect feel like I have learned a bit about farming . Keep up the interesting pics.

I've added air twice now in a few weeks so I figured something was going on and told her to have them fix it when they did an oil change to save me some time.

The car has 17k on it ... no WAY I'm putting new tires on it yet !!!

The below cost/free synthetic oil change still cost $100 .... I bet they still don't make much on it after all is considered though. We're supposed to replace/flush the brake fluid once in a while. Not sure how often but really ?? I've never done that before. Maybe I should ???

Once her "favorite mechanic" has his new shop there will be an end to other peoples greasy hands all over my machinery ......
