Yesterday I started helping with the clean up on the inside and rear driveway to get ready and finalize my punch list. We had rain the day before so the sky lift brought in a lot of dirt. After I finished pushing the dirt out, I started power washing to remove the tire marks and guess what? They won't come up and my washer is 3100 PSI. I don't care much about the rear driveway, but the inside is an issue. I read other threads on this forum and it appears that the tire marks are not just on the surface and I will need to use something abrasive to remove them. I was offered an option to pay extra for the sky lift to use "socks" and I declined thinking I would use the pressure cleaner I already own and save the money. (I'm also picky about messing up the walls so I like to do it myself) I do wish I had researched this issue before declining the socks option. Oh well, it is what it is...

Great idea on the safety modification too.

I've seen pics of your work; kind words are well deserved!

I thought the safety mod suggestion was worthwhile, but the idea of the goose neck faucet for the day-to-day caffeine machine fill is almost mandatory for a detached shop.

New update. Front driveway is almost ready to be poured. (planned for Thursday) Electric installation started this morning and my father and in-law, a close friend's son named Nathanial helped start laying out the living space, starting with he bathroom first. You will notice that I framed the entire bottom 8 feet with steel studs which the electrical contractors are using to run the cables and place the outlet boxes (a lot of them too) . This will also serve to help me route all the air lines and security wiring before I button it up with metal sheeting.

Today was the big pour of the front and left side driveways! This brings the total of concrete driveway and parking up to 8,000 sq.ft. Here are a few pictures...

update: Basic framing for the man cave inside the man cavern complete. I-Joists installed and flooring for the upper storage screwed down. I also rolled the kitchen appliances inside so the wife can plan out the kitchen layout. Next steps are plumbing top out, electrical completion (waiting on a pole install, lights install and power company hookup) and HVAC installation. Settled on 10 tons of cooling for the shop (two 5 ton heat pump units) and a Mr. Slim ductless setup for the "clubhouse". After that is paint booth installation, air system install, interior finish out and lifts installed.

Oh, the fork lift in one on the pictures I picked up on the cheap from Craig s list. Awesome tool to have.......

Picked up the air compressor and dryer for the shop. Got them from a small factory that needed to expand to an even bigger system. The compressor is a Sullair 10hp rotory screw with electric automatic drain. I love using refrigerated systems to dry the compressed air. I still plan to use a routing design with 3/4 black pipe to drain the air anyway in case the dryer fails or I don't want to run it for some reason.

Oh the picture of the leg is my first accident in the shop. Pallet impact....

I just drove by the shop site and Austin Energy is installing the three phase 240V equipment on the primary pole in preparation for installing my dedicated pole. One step closer to POWER and AC!

Are you sure the second inlet on the fountain isn't for water cooling? It is rare but I have seen a few fountains that were water cooled instead of air cooled. They waste a lot of water though.

The second port is actually for exporting chilled water I believe. The unit has an electric compressor to chill the water.

Okay, I've just got to ask; how much did the forklift set you back? Did you score the AC and cooler via CL too? I'm so-o-o jealous of the guys that live near CL gems; I'm out in the boondocks where the local CL seems to be the main outlet for people getting rid of **** that should be on its way to the landfill!

OK, The fork lift is a 1987 Clark 5K with 18' lift and tilt and the controls for side to side if I want to install the ram for it. I paid 3K for it delivered and so far it is one of the best things I have bought. I use the **** out of it. Granted the first night I owned it I almost flipped by cutting it way too sharp at speed so that it lifted onto two wheel. Was warned and still did it. Story of my life. Then following that little adventure, I got it stuck in dirt that was not as compacted as I had thought when I tried to lift a construction dumpster just because I could. Again, nothing new for me.

The compressor and air cooler were a package deal on Craig's list that cost me 2K and came with a thirty day warranty from the factory that sold it to me. The factory was upgrading to over 100CFM for multiple sand blasters and this little 30CFM wasn't needed anymore. The dryer is something that I am going to really use because I paint a lot of things and moisture in the air will ruin a paint job in an instant. I have a smaller one that love using today at home.

Yesterday, the duct work got started for the HVAC system. You can see two separate duct tubes that interleave outlets. That's so that each of the 5 ton units can cool/heat the whole shop in the spring/fall when the load isn't as heavy. This also gives me a little bit of coverage in the event of a single unit failure. The living space is going to be on a Mr. Slim system independent of the 10 tons of shop HVAC.

Good news, bad news. As you can see here the duct work is complete and nicely gone. I'm very happy with it. However, one of the 5 ton packaged units was badly crushed when unpacked so a replacement is needed. Sounds simple, but the shipping company wants to do the pickup with an inspector to access the source of the damage so I got 5-7 days for pickup and then another 5-7 days for the new one to arrive. Bites. I am still a week away from full power away.

Yesterday while waiting for the the local electric company to meet with the electrical contractor to work out how to save a tree while routing the three phase work to my shop, I decided to do a little customization on the old green Clark fork lift I picked up. After a close toss between going with a "hello Kitty Pink" theme or a Bat Fork theme, I chose the Bat Fork. Here are a couple of pictures of what I guess is the first "Hot Rod" conversion of the shop.

Better late than never.

The bags are filled with earth and used in area where the footing around the edge of the foundation is deeper than a couple of feet. The purpose is to prevent the dirt side of the trench from falling in until the concrete is poured.

So it's just reinforcement for the foundation walls before the concrete is poured. That makes sense. I thought it was some type of southern(Texas) foundation style.

Today the pole company placed two new poles and the power is now sitting on the pole waiting for a connection to the shop. The electrical contractors have gotten the junction to the shop just about ready so maybe soon there will be AC and lights !!

Installed the tile in the living area and put some corrugated metal panels up for the wife to review. Tried to pass the plumbing inspection, but it was not to be. Even though the plumber had to bust up the slab to make a correction, still didn't pass.

We've all heard stories about what happens when you pick a plumber with a bad temper who runs into an inspector with an equally bad temper. Never heard a story? Here's a quick except of how crazy it can be. My plumber got off to the wrong start with the inspector from a private water district. After numerous fails (many stories), I get to one last inspection before getting approved top out. Important if you want to get a functional bathroom. I was there when the inspector failed us because the plumber used 3/4" drain pipe for the hot water heater overflow drain. He said the code called for 3/4" diameter and he interpreted that to mean inside diameter and our drain pipe was 3/4" external diameter. Really! Then yesterday the electricians ran to lunch and locked the building. The inspector showed up to inspect the new 3/4 pipe, left a fail tag because the door was locked at 11:45. I called him myself at 12:03 thinking that perhaps he would be more understanding with the owner. I explained the mistake the electricians made and asked if maybe he could stop back by to see the new pipe since we are only .3 miles from the water district office ( the whole district is tiny). No sir, new inspection request must be filed. I went from pissed to just sad that a dude who was my age, 52, could behave so childishly to a customer. He was raised in my generation and I know I was taught better. My Father would have told me I was acting like a big sissy cry baby to be so childish with a little power. (actually he would have said, "stop being a little pu#@y before I slap some man in you") God rest his soul. He was really a great father to me.

Oh well, this too shall pass.... New inspection today......Keep your fingers crossed for me. I need a toilet

on the size of the pipe is there really a difference between them????? im confused on that one

I just got a call that we passed top out so I can start hooking up a toilet. As far as the pipe size question goes, to get a full 3/4" pipe on the inside diameter you need to use a 1" external diameter pipe. It's all silly anyway since the is just an emergency overflow for the pressure value on my electric water heater and it runs to the outside of the building. Since this is a garage with a concrete floor and metal walls, I'm not sure what I am protecting from water damage if the pipe can't keep up and some water gets on the floor. I will be washing cars and wet sanding inside also and there is a main drain in the floor. Anyway, enough time wasted on this topic.

I am waiting on a call to come out and meet the delivery truck for my new retractable paint booth. That is exciting....

but after working in the trades for 25+ yrs that inspector is probably what we called a book-smart work-dumb inspector He went to school passed the tests never apprenticed out or became a journey man just did the school and passed an ispector's test. An intelligent man who was bypassed by the common sense gene

We passed the plumbing top out inspection! The plumber filled in the shower drain hole, installed the shower base, mounted the toilet flange and today I can actually install a toilet! If only things would go as easy on the power issue.

Power company installed the poles in the wrong location so the travel distance to the shop from the last pole is more than 65' requiring a third pole. Good news is that I will now be able to route around a living oak tree and save it. Since it was going to take a while to get the new pole installed, the power company was going to string a light gauge power line over the 70' to give me enough power to run 5 tons of cooling and a bunch of lights making it easier to do interior build out.

However, they made a mistake and thought they were bringing in 3 phase 208 Wye so that was the equipment mounted on the pole. They were supposed to bring in 3 phase 240 delta and we had the paperwork to prove it. They are going to correct it, but got a little prissy and decided it was too big a waste of time to give me temporary power since they needed to change out the pole equipment. I have no date for the pole install, so my date for getting power is wide open. I planned to take off the week of the 4th to try and get this baby up and running, but without lights and some AC it is not going to happen. This too shall pass....
