Yesterday I needed to test out a split AC unit install, but had no power yet. I needed 240V 30A. My generator has a 240 30A output, but uses a 4 prong connector and of course the AC unit uses good old 3 wire cord. I was able to pick up a plug head at HD and then posted a question to our wonderful web site on the proper wire up. This was after searching the web and not getting a clear answer. I am pleased to say that several wonderful members posted EXACTLY the information I needed and at 1900 hours last night, I had the first cool air blowing in the living area of the ship. Here is the thread if anyone else is interested.

though what the efforts and hard work you have put into its making is of no doubt will surely make you feel pride towards the work you have done .. yet it's still incomplete as the images are only for half way down or you have got it accomplished without posting the other ones .. if it's then why no to post the rest to finish the story in style which you have started in style..

I have no idea what you are saying even though it sounds vaguely nice? Is there a problem with the images I have been uploading through this story? I would love to know how to do it better since I have seen what looks to be larger images than mine.

Well, yesterday was pretty exciting. It started at 5:00 in the morning when I went to open up the shop for the subs. I like to go early and look things over, clean up some, etc.. This particular morning, I entered the front door, found my way to one of the temporary shop lights, turned it on and saw that I was a few inches from a tarantula. Did I mention that I have a very high degree of arachnophobia. Very high. After what I am sure was a couple of hours passed, I was able to gain some degree of movement and slowly moon-walked my **** back away from the monster staring at me. Did you know that spiders have beady, little sneaky, sinister looking eyes and a lot of them. I do. When a spider is big enough to trip over, that's just wrong....

After going through some deep breathing exercises, I came to the conclusion that since the sipder-zilla was fairly close to one of the roll up doors, I would let him live outside in the cruel world and would help him along the way with a push broom. When I approached the abomination with the broom, it actually moved a little in my direction. This led me to the conclusion that the length of a standard shop broom was not nearly enough safety distance for any sane person.

I looked around the shop (with one eye still on the evil one) and spied a 2x10 metal stud left over from my construction. 10' hummm... not happy with it, but it might do.
I picked up the stud, which if you don't know is actually more a u-channeled piece of metal, and began to approach to creature by sliding the end ever closer to it. Just when the metal touched it, it JUMPED TOWARD ME!!!!! and then began to RUN up the stud toward me.

My memories are a little blurry from this moment on, but I know I made a sound like a 4 year girl and threw the metal stud away from me fast enough to make a sonic boom. Unfortunately, I fling it in the direction of the inside living space I had just tiled. Yes, I threw a f-ing Ta-Ta-Ta-rantula inside the area in which I will not only live, but must spend untold hours in installing a kitchen and bathroom.

While staring with a look of horror on my face, the thing crawled over the base of the wall and deep into the room. As I ponder what I did in my last life to deserve this fate, I feel a wetness on my hand and realize that throwing a sharp edged metal stud in a fit of panic with no gloves on was not one of my brightest moves. 10 stitches not bright. The little ******* has all ready hurt me without even touching me directly. Where is the demon seed today? Somewhere in the shop, maybe... I will be getting the lifts installed as soon as possible because there is no way I am laying on a creeper at eye level to that crawling nightmare. Everything IS bigger in Texas. Here a couple of pics for your viewing pleasure.

CudaChick, I'm so glad that my tragedy could bring amusement to people. I suspect that there will be a sequel since I spent several hours this evening scouring the man cavern ooking for the one who can't be named and was unsuccessful at finding even a single trace of spider spoor. Nothing that large can just disappear without some trail like the bones of small animals or something. I am convinced that I will see him again.....

OK, I just Googled the funnel spider. Australia was on my bucket list of places to visit or live in once before I die, but not to go to TO die. Scratch one Australia from my list..... I hope to have more news about my shop today so that I can guide this thread back to nice safe topics like cutting, welding, hammering, screwing, grinding... ect. You know, safe things we love....

yeah... I would say Australia and more specifically the outback have the highest density of f*ck-you-up species in the world.

Yesterday my friend Joe and I started assembling my new retractable paint booth from Duroair in Canada. The assembly has gone very smoothly and the product seems high quality so far. I am at a stopping point because of some missing parts, but I have no doubt that the company will get it straightened out very quickly since they have shown themselves to be very customer facing and great to work with. Here is a couple of pic of the system so far.

In post #51, jwestercamp asked, "Why do you have to put in tensioned cables"? I think he was asking about the steel cables running diagonally between the iron work, since his question was immediately after your photos of the installed iron. Your answer referenced the concrete work.....or maybe I'm confused. Wouldn't be the first time. Great shop.....good for you!

Okay, metal tensioning cables as it applies the building structure rather than the slab. The primary purpose of the tension cables is to hold the core building frame in square until such time as the outside metal can be applied. They are generally left in place because as the outside metal ages the screws loose and etc. they can still serve a purpose of adding extra strength of the building in the event of Highwinds or heavy storming. It is not uncommon to see people remove them or take them down however after the building is complete. So in summary, the primary purpose of the cables is to help with the initial erection of the frame itself.

As I expected would happen what a great company like Duroair, I was contacted by them this morning. There was a mixup in the paint booth packing and the parts were packed but not shipped by mistake. The parts are on thier way. Cool company.

Don't be too quick to knock Australia from your list. I have lived here for over 47 years and have never seen a funnel-web spider. The best I've seen is a red-back spider and a brown snake.

Too many "stories" about Australia, like Kangaroos hopping down the main street, just not correct

There would be no way of you coming to Australia to live would there, how could you leave a shed like that

Shed....I like it....I've been struggling for a name for the shop. The shed ain't bad. Lord knows I spent enough time being sent to the wood shed as a kid :)

Australia is most definitively on my bucket list even with funnel spiders. I actually grew up in North Carolina and face black widows and brown recluse spiders which while not as scary as Mr. Funnel are actually drop for drop more venomous and MUCH more dangerous because of the smaller size. A lot of kids get bitten and I have personally encountered over a dozen. NEVER bitten due to my amazing level of precaution and preparation. There are "survivalists" who spend years preparing for the collapse of civilization. I am a "surspiderlist". Studied species detection, always alert, years of extensive hand to multi-leg combat training, medical preparations always on hand. I'm ready.

This 4th of July has been a good one for me because I have full HVAC in the shop. I was able to spend the whole day working inside at 73 degrees while it was almost 100 outside. I love it. I ended up going to (2) 5 ton packed units for the open shop area and a 2 ton ductless system in the living space with 2 separate inside units. 1 for the bathroom and 1 for the open kitchen/great room.

I just realized that I should post a little about what I have going on at home as part of the deal for getting a new shop. The arrangement is that my wife will take the 2 car portion of our the 3 car garage to be used as a exercise/craft room. I will park in the driveway from now on.

To make this happen, I built a divider wall separating the 2 car section from the 1 car part. (we have a 2 car garage door and 1 car door). This included a door. (the first I ever hung...another story unto itself) Next was AC and heat for which I installed a Mitsubishi Mt. Slim heat pump. She picked a vinyl floor tile and we are now picking paint. She likes the look of the corrugated metal walls I am using in the shopwas that was what we use on one wall instead of sheet rock. She also wanted to make sure that the wall was easily removed if we ever decide to sell the house.

Here are some before and after shots and where we are in the project.

New wall from behind left open for now for easy removal

New wall front side and door.

Heat pump, which is just AWESOME! The tile she selected....

Do you believe in Karma? I have no choice after installing this vinyl floor. Here's the link between Karma and vinyl flooring.

This past week my beautiful wife, who is also as tough as nails, had a strange stabbing pain in her big toe. She first mentioned it to me one evening while watching TV. About an hour later, she was telling me something about her friend Joan when she jerked straight up, made a loud sucking sound from rapid air intake through clinched teeth, extended both of her hands outward and shook them like she was having a seizure. Almost instantly, she slid back down on sofa and resumed her previous conversation with only a quick "my toe again" comment. While on the surface this may sound like a scary sight and should evoke concern for her heath and well being, it was in fact very comical. I simply couldn't help myself stop from laughing and of course this didn't go over well with her. The fact that during the rest of the week I took every opportunity to re-enact her spontaneous "fit" didn't further endear me to her. I was even able to find a point while in a movie theater to do it in such perfect coordination with the current scene on the screen that you would think it was scripted. I have skills.

Fast forward to Sunday. We are installing the vinyl tile floor in the garage. While peeling the backing off of one of the 18x18 tiles, the tile seemed to leap from from hand. (did I mention that my wife has demonstrated psychic abilities in the past and I now wonder if telekinesis is in her skills portfolio) and rotate to fall perfectly "corner point" down and land on, you guessed it, my big toe. The impact site was directly at the soft tender tissue at the point where the toe nail starts.

I fell to the ground, raised my ****** foot into the air, pounded my fists on the ground and cursed the very Gods themselves between sobbing whimpers and softly calling for my momma. My loving wife looks down with a deep concern on her face and then re-enacted my re-enactment of her "fit", smiled sweetly and said, "Karma's a ***** ain't it Honey".

Could it be any clearer?

BTW, I might like to think I could withstand any amount of physical torture like a Navy seal and keep my all my secrets, , but I now know that just one toe, properly punished, will make me spill my beans. How in the hell can one little toe hurt so badly.

You know it's funny you should ask. I actually offered it to her yesterday and she said that she thinks it deserves to be in the big shop (which really needs a name beside "the black hole of everything we worked for over the years")

Mitch, not only is this garage amazing, but the write up is spot on. I encountered a spider in my garage last week, and feeling less brave than you, I reached for the WD40 and gave him a bath that he would never forget :eyecrazy: This is twice in the past year I've had to reach for pressurized chemicals in a can to take care of my my eight footed foe (first was break parts cleaner which worked a little better).

I can't wait to see some more progress, and if you ever run across that thing again, I would recommend sending him to live with Beelzebub.

Great shop build Mitch. Had a similar experience with a snake while working on our shop. I freaked and the wife came and picked it up and carried it outside and let it go. Gave a hard time for being a fraidy cat over a Red Racer. I was in Georgetown & Bastrop in April and a windmill buddy lives in Elgin. Like the area. Good luck with the final touches.Later, Jeff

Don't laugh! I once encountered a giant tarantula hiking in the desert with my brother. It was hot, no shade anywhere, and the thing was moving very slowly. My brother told me to put my foot next to it to get a "frame of reference" so he could snap a photo. The tarantula must have spotted some inviting shade. It shot up inside my pants leg like a rocket! !
He got his photo, and I screamed while bouncing on one leg franticly trying to shake the thing out. :scared:

I can't even read the phrase "Shot up inside my pants leg like a rocket" without actually getting heart palpitations, blurred vision and an intense need to pee. That is a freakin nightmare. Did you get therapy? Can you sleep. PTS?

who does something like that without thinking it would dent the doors?

Nice build, I like the beams in the floor and the tensioning cables. I wish I had done that. Maybe I wouldn't have hairline cracks in my floor.

To answer your question above of who would do that, is easy. A Dumb-***, in case you hadn't noticed, they are populated all over the world screwing up stuff every day cost smart minded people their money and their time. There should be a law...

I'm thinking of the Darwin expression about letting nature take it's coarse.

Again, great built!

Here is a picture of the wife's car right after getting detailed in the new shop! She is the first car in as it should be. Now I just need electric completed, floors done and living space finished. Not much at all :eyecrazy: The young man by the car is the son of a good friend who is trying to earn usage points by offering his boy as slave labor.
