The markings seem a little odd to me and the wrench seems quite early.
Playing catch-up... it is odd, Don. It looks to me like they separated the typical number-letter code from this early period with the "LOS ANGELES" stamp! On similar tools it would read "AD78 v PLOMB v LOS ANGELES 7A". On yours it reads "AD78 v PLOMB v 7 LOS ANGELES A".

0E would be from 1940.
What is this in reference to?

My thinking is that if the wrench was made in 1927 as it appears that the markings may not have been quite standardized yet.

Picked up this 3/8 PLOMB 5249 ratchet at a flea market on the island of Alameda CA yesterday.
There is a letter code DB on the other side right next to the made in USA imprint. Manufacturer code right? April 1942

Should I list it in the GJ classifieds for anybody or just throw it into my drawer with other odd ratchets? It works properly and reverses OK but it certainly doesn't feel like a new tool. I haven't cleaned or lubed it.

Does is show as a worn out war time finish or is it just non plated and stained or ???

Value?

That pear-head with knurled handle design is popular with collectors. I'm not sure when it was introduced. If you paid less than $20, you did well. If you paid less than $10, you ****. If you want to send it to me for what you paid (plus shipping) everyone will be envious of me for asking first.

The font looks very similar on yours and mine. My A Plomb/Calif Tool has slightly different font.

Got some nice Plomb this weekend. Had them all in a box, $2 apiece. I bought the bigger ones shown, went back the next day and got the 8 smaller ones for $1 apiece. I have a few more, hopefully will be able to complete essentially the whole set. One P&C snuck in, I left the rest of them in the box but must have grabbed this one by accident.

Also got a Firestone 1/4" breaker bar in the same sale, it's in almost new condition, with one slight 1/32" peeling area at the pivot end.

And, had to sneak in a Billings wrench, smallest engineers wrench I have ever seen...

.The wartime ratchets mostly look like your example. Below is a picture of my 1/4" drive sets along with a '45 pebble dark finish ratchet.

Is that the flea where they charge you like $20 to enter? I never went to that, would always go to the one by the coliseum or the one in Concord.

Yes, that's the one. But if you get there later than 9 AM, like I did, you can get in for $5
Very few tools there yesterday, at least by the time I got there. That ratchet is the only thing I bought... I knew that a GJ brother would like to have it.

(Rileysan gets it for his collection.)

Here is another piece I scored this weekend... Looks to be a pretty early piece but I don't see a date code on it... Any one know how old it is ? I am guessing 20's?

Smokeshow, that is shown in the 0C set in the 1928 Plomb catalog. The 0C set was the low price verson of their DOE's, and the numbering sequence would indicate that they were an older version than the mainline set. Your wrench would have been marked as a model "58" if it had been made in 1928, so it must have been made somewhat earlier. The 58 is not a date code.

I have a similar wrench, an 078, which is 7/16 x 1/2, and is the later version of this simple wrench. It is date coded 8B, which should be February, 1928. The three digit part numbers are for the later series wrenches.

Given the "LA Cal" marking, I'd put that in the teens to early 20's. Very cool piece!

Scored all this at the Portland international race way swap meet ! Scored a decent amount of p&c which I posted in the p&c thread ! Real pumped about the proto dinging hammer with original handle and the large plomb dbe( handle has weld marks on it from modification or repair ). Also real excited about the pliers which I posted last week

I picked up a box of punches and chisels at a garage sale on Saturday. I couldn't believe how many of them were Plomb. They all have been abused and are in need of restoration. The box was interesting as well. According to research done by Mr Bill it originally held an early micrometer.

SO what are those spade looking chisels really used for ? I have several Proto and Plomb I have found... Mortar and such ?
I heard them called cape chisels. Google says they are for cutting grooves in mild steel for key ways or blacksmithing for different metal inlays.

I wish you Plomb guys would keep this thread at the top so I wouldn't have to go fishing for it in the back pages!

Couple Plomb pieces in my early bird haul this morning...

The 3/8-inch drive swivel socket on the far left had so much crud on it I didn’t even know what it was for sure. It’s a Plomb WF-78 (3/4").

The 2” extension is also 3/8-inch drive, a Plomb 5260.

Any 3/8-inch drive stuff is few and far between in my neck of the woods, and I hardly ever see it in Plomb, so I was elated with these finds, especially because they are both cadmium-plated. You can see the traces of it very well in these photos.

CAT: nice finds. where are you located and would you like to trade those for another brand or are you liking your find?

Lug: since i have been on over 4,000 threads since i've been here at GJ i actually click on USER CP up under the GJ logo and the threads i subscribe to come up so i can see if any new posts are there or if I have to dig for one a bit i only have to go through the threads i have posted on. if that doesn't work I can always do the search.

not sure if you knew that or if you knew you can set your settings to 100 posts per page and another setting you can have the latest posts show up first so you can see what's new.

PM me if you don't understand that or need some clarification.

i know you were sort of joking cause this thread almost moves as fast as most of them so it's almost always on the first page or two of my list.

cheers and nice finds

This is a 1/4 inch set I picked up yesterday ! All of the sockets are Plomb.
I don't know if there was more to the set or not.

Not all the sets included a ratchet, apparently those were a luxury back in the day. I think I have 3 of the spinners, and none still have the paint stripe.

Thank's drives and Slewfoot; I thought there might be more than one configuration available. I was happy just to get the complete set of sockets.

I looked in the '39 catalog, and it appears you have a complete set 4700A
-B or -C would have had a 5 or 11 piece ignition wrench set
-K was the carb sockets only
-L, -LC, and -M added more sockets and drive tools.
