Notlob- nice find on the ratchet! I have that same in Proto, and a Plomb with green paint. One of the sellers suggested it may have been of Navy origin.

Does yours have a part number on every little piece?

I did a write-up here once. If you follow to my last post you'll see an interesting comparison that may indicate their origin.

Tin,
Congrats. I know you've been looking for that one for a long time. I took this shot the other day and I liked the similarities and differences between the pieces.

I have two of those, but I can't figure out the usage. In one position it free floats, and in the other it is like a spin handle.

Does it have a female drive in the end of the handle? If it does, it would be like one of those extensions with a free-spinning handle, lock it for normal spinner mode.

If it does, it is similar in function to this JH Williams M-110 I found on ebay (not mine)

Lug: i wouldn't be surprised if OLD MAN doesn't have 2 or more of those cause he has quite a few PLVMB goodies living almost next to the old factory. I think i recall too that either his gramps or dad worked at Plvmb or that might have been another member.

I might have one of those too, but i may never know if i don't GET ORGANIZED!!

cheers and keep up the drive to find those cool old tools and stuff!!

I was wishing for one of those flex speeders yesterday, had a call to an apt complex and had to skip the impact so as not to draw attention.

Here's one of mine, a 3/4" drive ratchet. I got this for free at an estate sale because the selector switch and cam were missing. I told the guy I'd take it if he was going to throw it away and he said OK. I bought a Proto rebuild kit and installed the missing parts today. It's not mint but it works once again so I'm happy with that. Oh, it's marked Plvmb on one side and Proto on the reverse.
Thanks, Steve.

No offense to OldManTaylor or to your faith in his vintage Plvmb prowess, but I'd have to see two WF-6 9/32-inch drive spinners - together, in the same photo - to believe it. Such is the level of my astonishment. And yes, that most certainly IS a (friendly) challenge! :)

LUG: i usually give benefit of the doubt, but i think i was thinking of Ole's collection and not OLD MAN'S cause I think his dad or grand dad worked at Plvmb. i guess we'll have to see and one of these days i'll put all mine in one place and see just how many i've picked up cause i grabbed almost every one i saw for 5 years while shopping for tools almost daily.

ALL: nice stuff and thanks for posting up all your pictures and comments.

Well, if I've got two I couldn't find the second one. So I took a picture of the one I have plus the similar Williams spinner.

While I was at it I took a picture of what I believe to be a military kit assembled during WWII. The sockets look like Craftsman, but all of the other parts appear to be Plomb. The only part with any identification at all is the 1/4" extension, 4761.

This is what I was going through trying to find the WF-6. Everything except the two big drawers are WF parts.

B/T/W, none of these parts came from my Dad, who had worked for Plomb Tool Co. He could only afford what he absolutely needed, and he wasn't a collector. My nephew (my Dad's oldest grandson) was very close to my Dad, so I gave him all of those tools.

The small box is full of my spare WF-8 ratchets. I also have at least one in each of the small tool boxes contained in my large tool box. The one outside of the tool box on the right is one of my favorite ratchets.

These are miscellaneous small wrenches, non of them WF series. The top are all 3300's, the middle are all 3200's and the bottom are all A. Plomb (which I don't actively pursue).

Anyone know the application for this USN NAF socket? 1/2" drive, cad finish, appears to be unused. Has an internal plastic ring similar to that used in some automotive spark plug sockets. Aircraft spark plug socket?

Yes, I believe that to be an aircraft spark plug socket.

OLDMAN: nice to know my memory wasn't failing me and nice collection that is for certain. very nice gesture passing off your Dad's tools to your nephew too.

i'm not certain so maybe the experts can say for sure, but i'd almost bet that is BECU on that socket and maybe for a spark free environment. don't take it to the bank, but i think just copper would have been too soft for tools.

thanks for sharing all the pictures and PM me if you have another brand of tools you'd like to maybe trade for your Plvmb tools you don't like as much and maybe we can work out something that helps both of us cause even though i like the PEBBLE the best I have more than a few of the others.

cheers

ALL: for any of you that don't already know this. DON'T GRIND OR WIRE WHEEL ANY TOOLS MADE FROM BECU (BERRLINIUM COPPER) (sp?) cause it's toxic and might be the cause of cancer for a few of my old golf buddies that used to grind their BECU Ping irons (golf clubs).

Well, if I've got two I couldn't find the second one.
Challenge well met, omt! (I'll trust you on the second!) :)

I ran across this, my only WF-130. Is this a copper clad?
I've never seen or heard of Plomb using their safety environment copper coating process (which they called KOP-R-KLAD) on WF tools, but it sure looks like it could be a copper coating to me. If it's not a safety coating, perhaps it's a copper undercoating they were still using on tools, including for their early WF contract production (1/41, 6/41) prior to copper restrictions going into effect in late 1941, and the chrome plate wore off. Copper undercoating has been seen on other Plomb tools from the same era. Not sure about Plomb WF tools. It'll be interesting if others show up.

Anyone know the application for this USN NAF socket?
I can look up the NAF stock number in my US Navy Aviation Supply Office Class 41 next week. Unless Unaiu or d42jeep stop by. An enterprising member who shall remain nameless digitized the hardcopies I scanned and mailed out and would be able to look it up sooner.

don't take it to the bank, but i think just copper would have been too soft for tools.
All Bethlehem Spark Plug Company tools were "copper-plated" (for rust prevention, not for non-sparking purposes) and I have found other so far unidentified copper-plated tools from the same era (also probably for rust prevention, not for non-sparking purposes). See a thread I started on the subject, linked here. And you can go here for four.cycle's thread on Bethlehem products. As I alluded to in my reply to omt, Plomb sold a line of tools in the late 1930's through at least 1941 called KOP-R-KLAD, advertised as "HEAVILY COPPER COATED BY A SPECIAL PROCESS". They stopped short of calling them non-sparking, or guaranteeing them as non-sparking, using terms like "spark reduction" and "lessening the possible hazard" instead.

Your intuition is good, though, because the copper plating on all of these early tools is soft, and does tend to wear off quite easily.

with the insert intact you've got a very nice example of a socket that I believe to be very difficult to find in any condition. I picked one up yesterday in the wild minus the insert (PLVMB USN NAF-1110-16).
