Did you buy it ? I have one of those that needs some love as well! If you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay ? Those so rarely come up for sale it is hard to establish a price on them. I paid $200 and I believe ragtopta paid just under that for his. Either way they are great boxes

Around 300 with shipping. A bit pricey but as you said pretty rare.

Think I paid $175 for mine. but its not got a bit of original pain on it left. even the insides are all bare metal. I was thinking bout repainting it, but I have since though maybe just leave it as it or even polish it!

This one is pretty complete, and has some paint. Also some rust. I will clean it up and see if remaining finish can be saved.

Sounds good! Mine is a black and green wrinkle finish that is mostly present. It is missing 2 slides and has a few broken spot welds that need to be fixed

Looks pretty similar. I have seen a couple with square corners while these seem to be rounded

I have one also, paid $80 at a swap meet in Sacramento (they didn't care what it was)

It has smooth pea green paint on the insides. There where pics of it somewhere in this thread, but they might have been eaten by Photobucket so I will get some more later.

Finally got pics of these next to each other, my biggest and smallest plomb/proto ratchets :thumb up: apologies for the slightly fuzzy photos

MFD Los Angeles pebble Proto 5849 inch drive, and a tiny Plomb 4751 1/4 drive

The plomb i managed to find on ebay.. and is the most expensive vintage ratchet I've bought so far, did take me around 4 years to track one down and not get outbid on it at the last minute

The big old Proto i liberated from work, as it was broken and was going to get thrown out!

Someone had clearly put a scaffold tube or similar on it at one point and had broken two teeth off the gear, and bent up all the retaining screws, surprisingly nothing else was damaged,

I ground out and welded the gear and re-profiled teeth. not perfect but works well, and should be strong enough. in the absence of a repair kit It will have to do.. i doubt there are any era correct kits out there

As well as this selector lever had also been fitted on backwards at some point presumably it came off and whoever fixed it didn't know which way it went so fitted it the way that 'looks' right.. I.E. the wrong way,so it wouldn't stay in position properly, maybe part of the reason it got broken,

and lastly also had to replace the detent pin spring as it had stopped being a spring (the drive square on this ratchet comes out so can be used as a female drive) but that was an easy enough repair,

for reference the face plate screws were 1/4 by 20 UNC thread, and 1 1/2" long, could only find stainless ones but they dont look too out of place

Nice shot! The closest I could come was this ‘41 1/2” drive ratchet and this 1/4” drive round handle.

Love to see some pics! Some of my paint on the inside of box is ok, but outside is shot. Decal is illegible as well.

Wondering if anybody has this logo or any other plomb logo in black (and only black?) I am going to submit the logo to a popular drinkware manufacturer to be printed on the beverage container of my choice but I can only use black on the logo so it will be basically an outline...I like the below logo but I would need it to be tilted so it is plumb (pun intended)...anybody handy at graphic design work? please post your black plomb logos please (or fix the one attached ) :)

A tramp stamp would be perfect for it, with the 'bobs pointing down...

But, I see someone beat me to the punch with the pic, nice work.

Someone was asking for a pic of my 9998, so

And the socket sets are breeding like, I don't know, files maybe?

Nice. The paint and decal are so shot on mine I have started stripping it for a repaint

Very nice collection of boxes! I am hoping to find some socket boxes like that in the wild some day. The 9998 is also very nice and has the same pea green interior paint like mine does .

Scored a biggin.

Yes, yes you did. Nice find.

I Picked up an early Proto N-38 ratchet yesterday. Plain steel and unfinished handle (no knurling). I took it apart to service it and the inside if very crudely finished as well. Very industrial feeling. Still works like new.

Pulled this off eBay. Regular 3/8 drive Proto 5249 ratchet. However, the handle is mark "PRV" PLVMB TVVL CO". Probably overpaid but it's the only one I've ever seen marked this way.

Tin, here’s an example I have in post #1831:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6357538&postcount=1831

Interesting, yours is different in that it has an LA cover.

Another pictured below that I bought another off ebay recently. Neither are in superb shape for a Proto ratchet, but they exist.

It says PRVTV 5249 MFD USA
PLVMB TVVL CV.

Pardon all the V’s, not sure how to get an inverted delta.

Also, these came as a surprise. Some nice Proto Whitworth sockets were in a lot I bought.

Do gou guys know if they can be dated by the star? I believe there was some discussion on this long ago.

Listed in the 1969 Catalog.

You need to find 5208BS to complete the set. 5/16BS or 1/4W

The star is just the detent spot. You are better off dating by the circle R, so I think '60's.

Also, in the fifties, they are listed as Whitworth, not British Standard if I remember right.

I will keep an eye out. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for teaching me something new. All the old Proto, Penens, I’ve tossed through over the years and never realized it marks the detent.

Definately 60's, were still listed as Whitworth in 1963 with the largest socket being 5212W, just 4 in the set then.

If you're referring to the Registered Trademark symbol, that was established in 1946. It's a good postwar tell for WWII collectors in the know on uncertain pieces. I don't know when Plomb started including it in their markings, but that's an interesting side-question. Not 1946, obviously. Not early 50s either, because there's plenty of PROTO without it. Another interesting side-question is when they started marking the detent with the star. All Plomb Empire (PROTO, PENENS, Fleet, etc) drive tool pieces with female openings had it at some point, including extensions. I just think of it as 50s or later, because I don't have too many reasons to be more specific than that. But it might be useful to know when.
