I’m liking the NAF toolbox! Now you need some Plomb NAF tools for it. I think it was made by Kennedy.

Really nice finds guys. Especially liking the 4 way and the USN box. I don't have a definitive answer to your question Dave other than all I can remember seeing pictures of are decals on Plomb boxes.

Is it marked Plomb?! Or are you posting it by association (with Plomb being one of many NAF suppliers...)?

I think it was made by Kennedy.
If you post a photo of it open, Rags, we would be able to confirm that, or identify it as the other major maker - Simonsen. EDIT: Disregard - I see it in the Garage Sale thread. It's a Kennedy for sure.

All I ever see is water slip decals on Plomb boxes.
...all I can remember seeing pictures of are decals on Plomb boxes.
As far as physical examples go, ditto, and I think that's going to be the universal answer. The only thing I would add is that's also what the images in the catalogs indicate.

The box had many applications during the war, Rags. Yours, with that NAF stock number marking, is not an armorer's box. Most probably used by mechanics belonging to US Navy Aviation ground crews.

I don't remember what I paid for this, but it was about $8? The tools were coated with rust that could be scraped with a thumbnail. It seems that the tools rust inside the box, I am doing testing ATM with some nails, so I keep them out of it. Only missing a couple of sockets from what I could tell. The extension and phillips are proto LA.

Perhaps a vapor capsule rust inhibitor will help if you plan to keep tools in it.

The taco wagon is out of control! You found a lot of good stuff in that haul! A run of crows feet, weed puller, hammer and the punch set. Major suckage!

To go along with Rags’ 1/4” ratchet, a couple drive plugs. These came in a Plomb parts kit.

attachment.php

The 1/4 plug would go into a female ratchet like normal.

And the 9/32? Well, at first I stared at the 9/32 trying to figure out how it would be used. Sure won’t pop in a 1/4 ratchet. I was like :headscrat . It has a step down to 1/4 in the center, so it clearly went to a 1/4 ratchet somehow, but I hadn’t seen one. Plomb put a screw in it for a reason.

attachment.php

It didn’t look like the screw came out, the square and washer looked like one solid piece that had never been taken apart. I carefully clamped it in a vise and applied some pressure on the ol’ screwdriver, and much to my surprise

attachment.php

Complete with gears.

attachment.php

SO reefer rat standing in just to show how it would work in an actual rat. I need to find me a stripped down 4748,4749, whatever it is.

attachment.php

A 1940 catalog online shows these plugs and their part numbers.

4752 1/4” plug

4753 9/32” plug

Yeah, I could use the 4752! Haha.

Good photo-to-cat tutorial, 3bay. We have gotten into the plugs before, with the big drive size rats (Outlaw, as I recall), and I know I just referenced the rat part number differences with Roy not but a few pages ago, but I never noticed the 1/4 to 9/32 plug distinction before. Very cool.

Wait. You have a Plomb parts kit!?

Jaw, meet floor. Haha. I remember that haul! Recently. Earlier this year or late last, right, 3eeb? There were on the order of a hundred rats, too. Smalls. Misc brands.

3bay has 2 (TWO)! parts kits... one Proto and one Plomb... and a ridiculous amount of ratchets...

I'm only slightly green with envy. :bounce:

Original thread is here.

That's it! The ammo-belt lineups! :)

It's interesting that his drive plugs are dark natural steel (unless I'm mistaken 'from here' about the finish). My 4748 female reversible ratchet is chrome, the last time it appears in a Plomb catalog is 18-A (which I date to at least 8/40 to 5/41 based on the Price Lists it has been found with), it's gone by catalog 19 (which I date to 1942 through April 1943, because it was printed before WPB L-216 took effect), and I have never seen a natural steel 4748 female reversible ratchet. That could mean the drive plugs were made during wartime to make prewar 4748 ratchets useable. Just a premature thought.

3bay: thanks for the catalog pics and yes the reminder that you found a parts kit. GEESH that must make you smile when you open up the drawer it's in or do you have a shelf so you can see it everytime you go in your garage/shop?

The 1940 Plomb 1/2” drive ratchet I bought lately has a removable plug and a plain steel finish. My 1939 3/8” drive ratchet is nicely chromed. I have no idea why the change.

I should have an exciting arrival today. Can't wait to get home and open it.
I like the look of their plain steel rats.

The parts kit is newly aquired. I'll post some pics when I can.
I will be waiting... Impatiently[emoji1].

3Bay: sorry I thought you bought that parts kit a while back.

ALL: i'm just getting up to speed again in my tools memory, but didn't somebody else find a new old stock parts kit or maybe there have been a few? I think I recall Lug finding a box of new parts, but not sure that was Plvmb.

anyway it's good to be thinking about tools again instead of moving my shop.

cheers

Thanks to a fellow GJ I have some more additions to the Plomb Wall. 5 screwdrivers, 5 sockets, a DA8 drive stud, and an early V1112. Not sure on the V wrench appears to be tappet but only see U series in the catalogs.
Also a group shot of the screwdrivers.IMG_20191017_202102033.jpegIMG_20191017_202107057.jpegIMG_20191017_202111822.jpegIMG_20191017_202338046.jpeg

Cool, guys. Yet another drive plug appears, R. Nice. The little ones I posted aren’t branded.

Drives, no shelves. Had to make room in the drawer for the new box. Some pics next to the boxes from that other haul.

Same green box, a bit nicer lid on this one.

It has a good amount of used parts someone was saving. Some new parts. Some Proto, misc parts in all drives including a bunch of 3/4 stuff, a mini 4751 plate, a few punches for repairs (one is broken).

So I was in my local Habitat store and stumbled upon a junky pile in the tool section with a few small metal boxes. The larger blue one formerly contained a cheap socket collection, was priced at $0.10, worth it despite the thin metal.

Next to it was a smaller heavy green boxed priced at $7.00. Intrigued, I opened it and found the SK Wayne label dating it to sometime after 1962.
But the smaller box inside was what really caught my eye:

I think these are my first Plomb tools!

Here are some complete sets if you want to add the missing pieces to your new find.
