So I am curious how you are making the cuts in the large pipe? Torch or a mega-bandsaw? The fitups look extremely clean.

Also are you working in your own shop, the space seems larger than I had in my head from other Royce-projects?

The cuts are made with a hand torch, I developed paper patterns for the different fittings, so the fits are pretty good.

The shop is the owners, I don't have the hoisting equipment for a job of this magnitude.
Thanks

When I first clicked this thread, while at work, I had no idea what a Porte-cochere was, and couldn't see the pictures. If it had been anyone else that had started it, I likely would have forgotten about it. But when I saw that Royce was the original poster, I KNEW it was going to be interesting and that I had to look at it at home.

I love seeing what you work on. What you post here is always interesting, and is often being done on a much larger scale than expected, making it that much cooler!

I'll be following along on this one too, for sure!

Marc,
This will not get blasted, the finish will be provided by Mother Nature.

There is no budget, it is for a long time friend and I have not tracked hours.

One last pic, for now.
Column doubler reducer.

I'll post again when it gets erected.

Now those are the kind of friends you want!

Looks great, and of course you are being very humble about how much talent is being shown here.

You could've just said carport and saved me the google search..lol

Drive-around the old neighborhoods in WPB by Dixie Hwy where they have the pre-WW II homes, and you will find lots of portes-cochere.

I once installed a redwood hot-tub in Coconut Grove FL on glue-lam 4" X 16" beams, installed in a high porte-cochere, where you could walk-out from the second floor of the dwelling into the space of the porte-cochere, and jump-into the hot tub.

This porte-cochere is an impressive addition, thanks for posting the build.

Tarbellb,
This is a bit of a showcase for fabricated fittings, which are rarely used anymore, other than 90 degree saddle ons, still used in the industry.
It is a skill that has somewhat gone by the wayside, because of the availability of forged fittings.

I really enjoy the process of designing and drafting something that is hopefully pleasing to the eye, calculate all the dimensions, developed the patterns, make the cuts, fit up all the components and then erect.

With a little luck, in the end, it will be a joy to behold.

It will be! I think you mentioned that you don't have to weld it out, sounds like a win to me.

I really like the pipe caps- I’ve only seen them used in your projects. I may have to borrow the idea!

Thanks Outwest,
They are called blunt heads.
Nice way to end a pipe and a common way to build a BBQ.

Thanks Firstram,
It is a piggy bank I made for the family, when the kids were toddlers.
I would hole saw the bottom once a year, for our vacation.
Surprising how much it would hold, if you kept the pennies out.

No doubt, I never spend change. We used to cash it in for Christmas money but I haven't done it in 10 years or more. Dreading it!

Lis,
To be honest, I didn't know what it was until I was asked to build one!

Jay,
My roll in this project is to get it through fabrication.
The owners weldor will weld it out.

Project looks amazing, as usual.

You may not have know what a porte-cochere was, but you know the difference between a welder and a weldor!

Happened by the owners shop today and saw they had the rafters stacked up, ready to truck.

After hitting ground water at 5', they had to change the foundation plan.

Unsubscribed. Tired of Royce's posting only piddly-*** simple little projects.
I wish he would tackle something BIG or COMPLICATED for a change....something that would challenge and inspire the rest of us, instead of one "meh.... I could do that with a K-Mart cold chisel. a rusty claw hammer and a $100 HF wire feed" project after another.
