Thanks guys. Smoke it is the smaller size.

Does anyone know when they stopped with the animal tools? It seems like they weren’t around too long

I picked up most of a 4700c set at the swap meet today. Just added what I could find in my mfd. stash. The box is so nice that I think I’ll try to finish it.

This is like the one I have, but mine is of the strange pink variety. I had no MFD Proto stuff that matched this set so as of yesterday I went on a shopping spree on ebay to fill it up. I will only be missing a couple of sockets by the time all of it gets here.

Very nice box!!

Very cool! I love the pebble pullers.

I have never used that kind of puller before. What are the curvey little clips for? Keeping the jaws from sliding around?

Thanks I think I will overlook the funny paint! Don't know about the clips, maybe just so it does not rattle around in box?

The rare wooden handle paint can opener.:) I've not run across many vintage screwdriver's that don't have some paint.

All this time I thought my puller was missing the springs so have just made do without them. Turns out they are a Proto innovation, and my puller is Plomb. I’m better off than I thought!

They will fit on the older plomb pullers. I suppose you could hit up proto for some.20210912_114312.jpg

There is a similar shaped flat W spring in the loose hardware section of my Ace. More angles, simpler geometry. May work

I’ve gotten by this long without them. They aren’t necessary, but probably nice. Like the barrel style stud pullers; work, but can be a pain to get the wedge in right if position is awkward by the time you hold the puller, insert the wedge, and get tension on it to work. If you are in a close space it can really be un-user friendly. But that’s a different thread!

Reed & Prince drive is a lot like Phillips, but pointier. It was widely used for aircraft fasteners in the WWII era, and into the 1960's.

From Wikipedia:

The Frearson screw drive, also known as the Reed and Prince screw drive, and specified as ANSI Type II Cross Recess, is similar to a Phillips but the Frearson has a sharp tip and larger angle in the V shape.[19] One advantage over the Phillips drive is that one driver or bit fits all screw sizes. It is often found in marine hardware and requires a Frearson screwdriver or bit to work properly. The tool recess is a perfect, sharp cross, allowing for higher applied torque, unlike the rounded, tapered Phillips head, which can cam out at high torque. It was developed by an English inventor named Frearson in the 19th century and produced from the late 1930s to the mid-1970s. The Reed & Prince Mfg. Company of Worcester, Massachusetts, was put into bankruptcy in 1987 and liquidated in 1990. Another entity called Reed & Prince Manufacturing Corporation, now of Leominster, Massachusetts, purchased some of the assets including the name at the liquidation sale.[29]

thanks for that info. I have boxes of R&P screws, never knew they had their own bit driver. I have a few really pointy bits, will need to compare specs.
