Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I have 5 going back. A friend, who is also a firefighter told me a couple of years ago that Kidde was ****, if I was going to invest in something that actually worked to go with a metal handle and something that can be serviced, which I did...and I guess he was right. I'll take 5 new extinguishers too.

Well. I've got two being replaced, and one that is "unaffected".
Apparently some models were only affected after a certain date code. That includes my H110G.

Is it possible for a mod to edit the title of this post? Not all plastic handled fire extinguishers are affected.

Curved plastic handles with horizontal pins do not appear to be recalled.

Thanks! I just tried to modify the title, but it looks like I was only able to modify the title of the first post. Hopefully a mod will finish the job.

I also added a link to the video to the top post. Nice find. That clears up some things for me, and explains why I have one that was not recalled. Makes me wonder what the internal differences were.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I received my three replacement Kidde fire extinguishers today.

Each extinguisher came in a slightly larger brown shipping box and then the retail product box. Instructions state to remove the new extinguisher from the product box. Then place the recalled extinguisher in the product box then shipping box and attach the prepaid Fedex return label over the existing shipping label and take the box to a local Fedex office.

They used styrofoam "peanuts" for packing material. That's a PIA to unpack and repack. The peanuts go everywhere.

Before you try to take anything out of the shipping box, place it in a large garbage bag. You can then either dump some of the peanuts out or just take the items out of the shipping box and let the peanuts fall into the bag.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I just registered 3 units purchased in 1996 or 1997 when we bought the house.

I need to brush up on Fire Safety here at the No_Garage as they were never wall mounted - just tucked into spots in the garage.

I edited the title of the thread as to what you changed it to in the first post. I also made the change (MOST) in caps since that is the key word in the difference.

Next time, don't be afraid to shoot me a PM.

I registered 2 extinguishers the other day. I have two others with metal components from other manufacturers. The one I bought on the recall list is our kitchen extinguisher. The other one was bought in early 2000 as a cheap unit for tough truck racing. I had 3 trucks going all the time and needed a third one so I bought this one. I had always tried to stay away from the plastic ****, but figured I would never use it anyway (local FD was on hand at races).

Follow-up on my replacement Kidde fire extinguishers I received last Saturday.

Fedex will not accept the returned extinguishers!

I packaged the three extinguishers as directed in Kidde's return instructions and applied the provided Fedex return label. Then I drove to my local fedex office location and they refused to accept them! Something to do about pressurized and corrosive material. The counter person stated Kidde made an error in the instructions and I would need to contact either Fedex or Kidde. He said i could try delivering them to a central Fedex location about 15 miles from my home but wasn't sure.

I went to the Fedex and Kidde sites and they have no additional information.

I really do not want to waste more time returning recalled extinguishers and may just throw them away.

You would think Kidde and Fedex would know enough about their product and services to get this right the first time.

FedEx just dropped off the first 1 of my 4 affected extinguisher replacements. Swapped bad extinguisher into the shipping carton, stuck on the supplied return FedEx ground label. Called the Fedex ph.# on the instruction sheet, gave them the track # & info. They said the box will be picked up Monday. It still has their hazmat label on it, so we'll see if the driver actually takes it.

It may something as simple as your local office may not be Hazmat certified so they wouldn't accept them. I believe they will also have to be shipped via ground and can't go air transport.

There are several branches of Fedex and that could be causing a "ship-back" error.

So,,,,,,,,,,,,, now that all you guys have gotten all these free, cheap assed extinguishers to replace the 10-25 year old cheap assed extinguishers, some of which had to be searched for to find them, will you now be putting them in a proper location?

Or just putting where ever so they can sit around for another 10-25 years?

My local FedEx *****. Every single time I get something next day or 2nd day, it's late and they refuse to refund the shipping, the driver refuses to leave items that aren't marked "signature required" and I have to drive a 1/2 our to pick the **** up or wait another day to have it dropped off at a local FedEx store. Dell only ships FedEx "signature required" and if I try to get something shipped to my job they say it's an address other than my billing address it so takes a Novena from the Bishop of FedEx to get it done.

Another follow-up to the Fedex return of Kidde fire extinguishers.

I received a letter in the mail today explaining that Kidde is revising the return shipping instructions. I should call the 800 number and provide the person with my shipping information.

Fedex will pickup the extinguisher from my doorstep. No need to go to the Fedex offices.

This must be costing Kidde a small fortune. Perhaps commercial insurance covers some of the expenses but it makes me think that the poor recall process and defective product are indicative of a poorly managed company. I do not wish to trust the lives of my family to a company that mismanages design and production of life saving products and then mismanages the product recall process.

My next fire extinguisher or smoke alarm purchase will not be a Kidde product.

My last follow-up to the Kidde extinguisher recall. The final straw.

I placed the return shipping boxes with the recalled fire extinguishers by my front door this morning. When I arrived at work I called Fedex to schedule a pickup.

Fedex will not pickup the packages without an account number to charge shipping or fedex shipping pre-paid label number. I don't have either with me.

I called Kidde to complain about the hassles for returning these extinguishers. After waiting 4 minutes with music on hold and "your call is very important to us" messages, kidde disconnected my call without answering.

That's the final attempt by me to return the extinguishers. I will not spend any more of my time attempting to return them.

My suggestion to anyone who has a recalled extinguisher is to not waste your time returning them. Kidde is mishandling this recall and likely does not want them back. This could be a case study of how to not manage recalls well.

I will just show the kids how to us the old ones....I see a few trash can fires in their future. :scared:

Some sand in the bottom of the old metal bucket and something to burn. Now Sweep that fire.....

That’s a really good idea. I think everyone should have some experience using an extinguisher. I may ask the local fire department if they want them to use for demonstrations.

Got mine via FedEx today.
I called the 800 # to set up a pickup for the recalled one... Scheduled for Friday 9am.
We will see how that goes.

EDIT:
FedEx did pick up the recalled one today (Friday the 24th).

Glad to see several of you guys have received your new extinguishers as I still am waiting on mine. However with the holiday this week, BF sales and gift shipping season it may slow things down a bit.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

On a related note - can anyone recommend a good but affordable "professional" fire extinguisher for a home/basement/garage? I see the Amerex brand around my office so they must be half-decent enough for fire protection companies to sell.

If you want a good and free commercial grade fire extinguisher, contact a local company that inspects / services fire extinguishers / systems. Commercial facilities in most big cities have to get their extinguishers inspected annually, and REPLACED after like 12 years (even though they are still perfectly good). These companies typically just disassemble and dispose of the old extinguishers or give them away to people (they can't legally sell them)...

I've gotten quite a few that way, nice big commercial grade one... They were more than happy to give them to me.

Between my house, garage, mom and Dad and other relatives I’m *** deep in recalled extinguishers. Think I’ll look into Amerex. We have them at work and I’ve had to use them. They’re quality.

Got 2 of 3 delivered yesterday. They gave me larger units than i had, with hoses attached and metal brackets with big stickers. Clearly not the little homeowner units i had registered. Is that what everyone is getting?

I had 4 of the Fireaway 110 (10ABC) that were on the list.

Did the online application and so far I have received one replacement. It was the same size but a "pro" rechargeable model with a metal valve housing, some stickers, but no wall bracket.

I just received one of two today. Much nicer than the ones it is replacing. It is larger capacity, looks about twice as big. Five pound chemical instead of three pound that I have. With attached hose and metal bracket for mounting. All metal handle.

These replacements are nicer upgrades for me. Not the little dinky homeowners models I currently have.

I applied on line for the replacements on November 3rd and have already received both items. That is impressive. Kidde made arrangements for the old units to be shipped back to them so be careful when you open the package as it is also the return shipping box for your old extinguisher. They have a new shipping label inside and all you need to do is box it up and call Fed X to arrange a pick up.

Not sure, I sent in request on Nov. 10, got an email on Nov. 17 asking to confirm mine were recalled and have not heard anything else or gotten my new ones yet.
