Those two could pass for brothers :ROFLMAO:

Up north here where I live, I wouldn't need to spray them down to get that patina look, I would just set them outside and it would happen on its own pretty quickly :ROFLMAO:

Again the views around your property are stunning  🥃

That view is as good as if not better than GJ member Odis’ view from his place on the WA coast.

Thanks Jay. We were almost directly across the Sound from Toolfool before he moved to Tallahassee.

We were back there this weekend for a funeral; typical Puget Sound winter- cold, foggy and rainy all weekend. First time we were back since we moved almost 4 years ago. Can’t say I miss the gray..

Time for another update; knocked out a couple of small projects this week.

My neighbor gave me an old GE traffic light that was in pretty rough shape. Someone had painted it flat black, the gaskets were literally crumbling, and it was covered in thick ,oily grime. First order of business was to strip the old paint. I started to disassemble it but the brass screws holding the lens retaining clips in place wouldn’t budge, even with penetrating oil and heat. I stripped the head off one and broke a second before I decided to leave that well enough alone.
So, a couple of thick coats of citrus stripper, a brown paper bag that the stripper came home from Ace Hardware in, and I was committed…

Scraped the first layer off with a sharp putty knife; re-applied a second coat and covered it with plastic to work overnight.

Took quite a while to get all the paint off the traffic light, using a selection of brass brushes in my M12 drill and die grinders but when I got there I thought it ended up looking pretty good in brushed aluminum. So, it’s going to stay that way for the time being. I have plenty of yellow paint if I change my mind later.

Built the mounting brackets out of 1”, 1-1/4”, and 1-1/2” pipe and. 1” Kee fittings. Used the 1” pipe inside the 1-1/4” to fit the larger diameter to the smaller galvanized Kee elbows- I have a bunch of 1” elbows and tees left over from another project, been trying to use them up whenever I can.

Bought a little controller on Amazon, currently have it running: Red@20 seconds, Yellow@10 seconds, and Green@30 seconds. Had some leftover sheet cork so I shot it with 3M spray adhesive and put it behind the controller; didn’t have enough room for the little plastic standoffs that shipped with the controller.

Got it mounted above the Texaco display cabinets since I had power up there already and I could hide the cord.

I’m calling this one done; I got tired of moving it from one side of the shop to the other over the last year; at least it’s finally functional and off the workbenches.

Had one more little display project in mind; I have been looking for a Diet Coke sign to hang in the garage, but not much available. ( Lot of Coke signage out there but very little Diet Coke)

Finally found a thoroughly trashed Mexican Diet Coke flange sign, so I focused on making a retro looking mount that I could use now and maybe upgrade when I find a better sign in the future.

Here’s the inspiration:

63BC1BE5-3FEA-4E73-987D-23012A93E90E.jpeg

I dug through my bucket of drops and came up with some 1/8” x 1/2” cold rolled, and 1/8” by 3/4” and 1/8” x 1” hot rolled flat bar, so I was good to go without buying anything.

My friend Ron had given me a HF bender- he had never used it and wanted the shelf space so he dropped it off at my place last year. Thought this might be a good excuse to break it out of storage and try it out.

B1D3128C-A3FB-41AF-8F32-B8C40799F846.jpeg

It had been wrapped in newspaper when he initially put it away; apparently that was 18 years ago!

Got the two scrolls rolled, then did the bends in my vise. Took a little finessing angles to get everything to fit; the pieces get bolted rather than welded together. The original was riveted but that’s not something I wanted to take the time to master last week.

Had to weld up two little U- brackets to hang the sign; these took longer than they should have, check out the little 1-1/2” Veritas square- it’s really handy for small work.

Gave it a quick coat of satin black and the frame was ready to hang.

The Diet Coke sign is really rough- paint was flaking off, someone had patched up the rust spots with red and white electrical tape, and the flange was torn halfway off. I shot it with a couple of coats of satin lacquer to keep the paint from flaking and used it as is, didn’t try to restore it. It definitely looks like it might have been hanging in an old Mexican gas station.

This project gave me a retro hanger and eliminated the broken flange- buzzed that off In about 15 seconds with my M12 cutoff tool.

Found a little piece of U-channel in my scrap bin that worked great as flange hanger for the sign, hit that with a coat of red implement paint I had on hand.

Turned out OK; fun little afternoon project in between the traffic light and what’s next…

Not yet. The light has the brass screws (frozen) in place for visors, but they weren’t on the light when I got it. If I find some GE visors I might be tempted to add them. (The light comes down easily, just have to loosen two set screws on the kee fittings. )

You do some classy work over in the desert. I haven't found any Diet Coke signs in my travels either.
That hanger looks good. I've done a couple of street lights and found my controllers on Ebay but I'm liking yours much better with the ability to control the time for each color. Your work is outstanding and your creativity is even better.

Diet Coke was introduced in about 1986? so there’s nothing really old out there.

I have a feeling from your posts that you may drink as much Diet Coke as I do….

I found the flange sign on eBay, it is definitely a Mexican sign, haven’t seen anything on eBay recently.
Let me know if you run across anything, I will do the same.

Scott, looks like a nice backhoe. Mine is not so nice. When the septic system in our first home backed up on Mother's Day, I started digging with my back hoe, with its 5-gallon bucket. Over the next couple of weeks I dug a 10'x10' hole in the back yard, working nights and weekends. The project was delayed each time the cable on my artificial arm snapped. Lined the hole with block, back-filled with coarse gravel and capped it with a concrete disk. I was in my 20s and my mind was weaker than my back -- I actually dug another 6'x6' dry well for the washing machine a year later.
