Wrenchr,

What kind of head is on that new MAC flex-head? Is it a round head or the traditional pair head?

EDIT: Is it pair, pare, or pear?

Okay gang, found a drawer full of used 1/2 drive ratchets.

Not the prettiest, but cool to see the different designs engineering guys came up with over the years.

On the left, from top to bottom:

Walden
Napa
New Britain
Husky
Proto
Hinsdale
Walden Worcester

On the right, from top to bottom:

Western Auto (Also says Westcraft?)
Indestro Super
Indestro Super
4 Williams

Bottom Center:

Willliams (Older version)

More to come.............. :3gears:

where do you find non-sealed Snap On ratchets in good shape? It seems like the older stuff is all chewed-up around here at pawn shops and flea markets. If nothing else, the dust covers themselves are all torn up.

Ebay, pawnshops, garage sales.

You know, lingerie shouldn't be underestimated when shooting erotica:

ratchet-drawer.jpg

I couldn't sleep one night and I had that foam board stuff lying around. It's the main ratchet drawer of my tool cart. I know, could be more space efficient, but it does look pretty :):):)

And, yes, I do like the ratcheting cross-force wrenches. As long as there's enough room, I always reach for those first...

More 1/2" drive from the drawer..............

Used, but not.......(well most).......not used up.

On the Left, from top to bottom:

KD
Blackhawk
Cornwell
Proto
Master Craft (yep, stamped U.S.A., has a nifty socket release head mechanism also)
Armstrong
Armstrong

On the Right, from top to bottom:

S-K Wayne
Williams
Challenger (by Proto?)
New Britain (looks like a near twin to Old Salvage's 3/8" drive Blackhawk version he posted in post #40 of this thread, only without the rings grooved into it next the handle's knurling)
Proto (is it just the pic, or does the head on this ratchet look overall smaller than the Proto on the left??)
Herbrand (No U.S.A. stamp??)
Thorsen (kind of a cool design)

Bottom Center: Powr-Kraft Flex-Head (someone welded solid, still works great, just no flex)

More to come, "black handled and not Snap-On" pic..... coming up .......... ;)

Up next we have some black handled 1/2" drive Wright creations, among others..........many supplied to Montgomery Ward under the Powr-Kraft brand name. :bounce:

On the Left, from top to bottom:

Action
Blackhawk (This handle looks like Old Salvage's 3/8" drive Blackhawk in post #40 of this thread, but has a different ratchet head design.)
2 Wrights
Powr-Kraft (appears to be an S-K designed head)

On the Right, from top to bottom:

5 Powr-Krafts (the top 4 are twin to the Wrights on the left, with the bottom-most with the different reversing mechanism having a different code (symbol) of some type stamped on it compared to others having a 2 digit number in the same spot.)

Yes, more to come......any Plomb fans on the board??

I read that "you know you're German" stuff, and we always got candy on Dec 6th, what was the feast day though? I think it was St Nicholas...and I grew up in Cincinnati. Lots of Germans in Zinzinnati, let me tell ya.

Bring on the Plombs! Can't wait

Gotta love encouragement.....THANKS!.....time consuming digging all this stuff out.......but a whole lotta fun! Forgot about a lot of this stuff, haven't seen many of these ratchets in years.........

Next up, another lot of 1/2" drive ratchets. Tried a different layout, think I like it more.

From left to right:

4 S-K's
Bonney
Penens
4 Plombs (All 4 are different, even the Pebble grain ratchets have different machining and spacing of the "PLOMB" letters. The round handled one on the far right has a "KC" Plomb factory stamping on it.)

A few stray 1/2" drive Snap-On's have been dredged up (some are antique), and are on deck, as soon as I get them all together for a pic........... :)

Yep, St. Nicholas day. For me, it was mostly peanuts and oranges, though. No chocolate...

When I was growing up, there was also St. Martin day in November. Some roman soldier who cut his cape in half to give a piece to a freezing beggar. No candy for that one but candle light gatherings in the freezing cold...

MOPARHOUND!, it looks like quite a few of your ratchets could use some rust removal! You really should try "EVAPO-RUST" this stuff is unbeleivable! Try it, you'll love it! :)
http://www.evapo-rust.com/

Thanks for the tip billymade! Have some car parts that could use that to.

Entered my zip code, and it showed the nearest dealer 21 miles away, but the front page shows several automotive/farm supply chains that carry it within 5 miles of the house. Will keep an eye out for it.

That's a nice collection, Hound; keep the pictures coming!

Another pic coming up!

There are enough Snap-On 1/2" drives to split them into 2 pic's. Think I'll post the 1941 and newer first, and save the 1940 and prior for the last of the 1/2" drive pic's........... nothing like a little anticipation to keep the thread interest up. :D :p

From left to right, from oldest to newest, listing model # also:

1941 71-N
1944 71-N
1946 71-15
1947 71-15
1949 SR-710
1956 71-N
1958 L-710
1963 71-M
1979 S-710
2003 GS-71

Okay, who's wondering where all the Craftsman are? Hit the mother lode!.....and about gave myself a hernia when I slid the box off the shelf. :lol_hitti But before that have some other 1/2" drive to show off.....bunch of S-K, etc. ...........Powderkeg, it's going to be close on the ratchet count........ :pimpflash

Mopar,

Was looking over your pics, and in the one with all the Wrights/PowrKrafts, you suspected the all-chrome PowrKraft on the bottom left to be SK sourced. I believe you'll find it's a Duro-Chrome/Indestro model - the body is a mirror image of a Duro-Chrome 675 I have, with the tri-wing shifter found on some round head Indestros (likely on Duro's also, my 675 happens to have a 4 lobe shifter). Check the patent # on the drive side of the head - if it's #2686582 then it was made by Duro Metal Products.

 "Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends..........Come inside..........Come inside!!"

Okay gang we're back after a weekend of garage digging. It is mind boggling.

Got up early Saturday morning, and visited the flea market for the first time in 7 or 8 years, and in spite of the numerous ratchets in the collection, scored 4 more not in the collection, unreal! X-long Blackhawk 1/2 drive, old Speed-Master 1/2 drive, antique Plomb 3/8 drive, and an old Williams 1/4 drive.

Back to the ratchet counting.........

10 more ratchets in the 1/2" drive category, from left to right:

JCPenney (only 1/2" drive I've ever seen, this one is from a complete set in it's original JCPenney metal case)
3 S-K's
S-K (new from a set in a blow molded case, S-K has put a thicker "neck" around the ratchet head for added strength on their newer ratchets)
S-K (green handle, like new, also has the thicker "neck")
3 S-K's
S-K (antique, one of maybe 15 ratchets I actually use, enjoy using something different once in a while)

More S-K, etc. on the way........... :bounce:

Believe you're correct, style is similar to the SK, but is about a dead ringer for a Duro-Chrome/Indestro model.

Next up, we have a mixed bag of 13 1/2" drive ratchets..........

From left to right:

Craftsman Polished
Blackhawk (has something stamped on it about gearless action, IIRC??)
3 S-K's
S-K Wayne
S-K
Thorsen
Dayton (reminds me of the JCPenney in the last pic I posted)
Armstrong (looks like a Plomb/Proto head style)
Blackhawk (this one also has something stamped on it aobut gearless action, IIRC??, different head design though than the Blackhawk to the far left of the S-K's in the pic)
Proto (One of the funky 1/2" & 3/8" drive ratchets all in one they made. Overall length is the same as a 1/2" drive, and the handle has the same heft, but the head is 3/8" size with a 1/2" drive on one side, and 3/8" drive on the other. Pretty nifty.)
Husky

Another mixed bag of various brands on deck..............stay tuned.........

Back with 10 more 1/2" drives............

From left to right:

S-K (Unique head design I rarely see)
3 S-K's (Have the diamond logo, and Patent # stamped on the shaft)
Fleet (Carry this one in a Fleet set in my truck, used it several times)
Armstrong (Near New)
Challenger (by Proto)
Powr-Kraft (yet another design)
Speed Master (needs a reversing lever)
Unknown (I'm guessing it is an Indestro/Duro of some type?? It is twin to the Powr-Kraft in post #96 of this thread, just no name stamped on it.)

Dug up still more Extra Long handled 1/2" drives..........pic coming up next...........(patience all you Craftsman & antique Snap-On fans.......... :lol_hitti )

From left to right:

Mac Ratcheting Head Attachment (Just had to choose a breaker bar to display it with, picked a great looking Blue & White handled Williams)
Craftsman
Mac
S-K Wayne
Easco (New, fine tooth, quick release, and thumbwheel)
Proto (Fixed head torque wrench)
Snap-On (Flex head torque wrench)
Williams (Antique looking torque wrench, has a cool selector adjustment for "sight" or "sound". )

Woo-Hoo!!!........getting closer. Can 'HOUND catch Powderkeg's 240 ratchet count......??

Stayed tuned GarageJournal.com fans,......same GarageJournal thread.....yet another GarageJournal time........!!!!!!!!!!!! :3gears:

Alright GarageJournal.com fans.............we're back. Thought awhile about what order to post some more 1/2" drive ratchets........:headscrat .......and decided next up would be 15 Craftsman flat panels. Get some of the mundane stuff out of the way.

From left to right:

10 Craftsman (just prior to the current Sears offering)
5 Craftsman (of the current flat panels)

Continue to find stray ratchets in the over 100 hand boxes, among other places......try to bunch similar ratchets together when I can.

Next up, mixed lot of more Craftsman ratchets...a few different styles...... (Root Beer that is..........LOL.) The count goes on.......

All these posts are making me light headed; what is the deal MoparHound.... where in the heck did you get all these tools and where do you store all this stuff? I'm baffled, confused, overwhelmed and blown away all at the same time... care to explain? Inquiring minds want to know! Also, some shots of your tool boxes, rollaways, shop and whatever other craziness is in your "man cave" would be of interest as well.... I'm kinda still in shock/awe here.... :)

Okay,.......another day.............another ratchet post. Thanks for replying bchee and billymade.....sometimes think I'm carrying on a conversation with myself...................LOL. Thread must have some interest......over 300 views within the last 22 hours or so. :bounce:

A mixed lot of Craftsman ratchets, from left to right:

4 Craftsman (older ratchets, is it just me, or did Snap-On make these? Looks twin to me, that or someone copied the Snap-On design. Noticed the 3rd ratchet has a hollowed out place in the handle the other 3 don't.)
2 Craftsman (the flat panel style used prior to the current Sears offering.)
4 Craftsman fine tooth (the one everyone likes, fine toothed, thumb wheel, socket release feature. Yes, one of these sits at the front of my tool box within easy reach too.)
4 Craftsman Polished (this is the version used prior to Sears current offering of polished ratchets. Has a built in thumb wheel, but no quick release feature. The black thingy in the center of the ratchet head is the reversing lever.)
Craftsman Polished (older version of the polished ratchet. Somewhat challenging to find these, I think they are cool looking. What looks to be a thumb wheel is actually the reversing lever of the ratchet, and the center part of this ratchet is a socket quick release feature. Tried to get the paint off of it, but some of it was more stubborn than the rest.)

The count marches on...........even older Craftsman on deck (well mostly :), maybe a few strays mixed in ).............

Debated between 2 pic's as to which to post next. In hindsight I would have arranged/grouped these ratchets differently. But between finding more ratchets after some photos have been taken, and getting wore out after a few hours of hoisting and scrubbing tools/toolboxes, a guy don't think the best.

Don't get me wrong, it's been a blast discovering tools, and getting re-acquainted with stuff you forgot you had........a little caffeine helps along the way :shocking: .

10 mixed brands, mostly Craftsman, from left to right:

Craftsman (factory stamped "BE")
Craftsman (factory stamped with an "H" in a circle)
2 Penens
Craftsman (just another of the flat panels prior to the current Sears version)
Indestro
2 S-K (the shiney one is from an old set, great shape)
2 Craftsman (yes, 2 more of the desirable fine tooth, thumb wheel, quick release versions)
Easco fine tooth (ratchet head is twin to the Craftsman's beside it, handle is different)

Okay........now for even older/antique Craftsman stuff..........stay tuned............ :hellobye:

('HOUND's running ratchet total, this thread: 177 1/2" Drives. Number needed to surpass Powderkeg's overall/all sizes ratchet total of 240: 64 . )

This is just INSANE, insane... I say!

:willy_nil

Looking back it probably was.........but had a good time meeting people, and befriending many at the flea market and the assorted pawn shops. Couldn't stand to set at home and watch cartoons on a Saturday morning. Single at the time, had to have something to occupy my time and combat boredom. 90+% of what you are seeing was amassed in 1998, 1999, and 2000, prior to my getting married.

A typical Saturday meant getting up at 6am Saturday morning to be at the biggest flea market by 7am to get choice of what was offered. By 9:30am or so had cased the entire place twice, and then headed to 2 smaller flea markets across town. After an hour or so there, would usually hit 4 or 5 pawn shops downtown. Did score a few things off eBay during it's early days (till I got burned on a 3/4 drive Snap-On socket set) , but most of my stuff was bought in person. Did buy some stuff at auctions, and from people who advertised in the newspaper classifieds. Never heard of Craigslist back then.
