Well, Sears is starting to roll out the "Pro" line of everything as their "Made in USA" products once again... *rolleyes*... Whether it's too little too late we will have to wait and see...
When I went to pickup my items at a regular Sears at the mall, most of the store was in quite disarray with clothes racks looking like they've been ransacked and not neatly folded and stacked or hanged in nice groups. Kitchen appliance area looked like it was untouched, lots of product piled up... I'm sure people found cheaper elsewhere. Mattress area was half empty and not much selection. Large kitchen appliances were kind of off to a side room, about the same selection as Lowes or HD, but not arranged neatly or clear prices on everything. Finally the Lawn / Garden / Tools area... It too looked like a tornado swept through that place. Some things they had piles of (toolboxes), other areas the shelves were completely bare. Tools were not organized or grouped together well at all. The employees were friendly and always asking if they could help me with anything though.
The Sears Hometown store that is the usual one I visit (and much closer) is always very well organized, clean, and friendly. It's a franchise and the owner is always there working hard, he also does the delivers and repair calls. Sometimes his kids are there running around the store, and his oldest son he's been teaching how to run the register. I like that store because he remembers what I bought, and we end up just chatting about whatnot. His prices on tools always seem to be the non-sale price, but if you just show him the Sears website page he will adjust it no problem.
When I lived in Houston we had a Sears Hardware close by. It was corporate owned but eventually became franchise owned several years back. I liked it because they had a better nut & bolt selection than even Lowes & HD. It was also more convenient if you only needed one little thing to go there for home repair parts. They had a small selection of kitchen appliances, okay paint section, and the usual lawn & garden equipment. Tool pricing is what really got me... Many things were marked down with the red tags, but then when you got to the register they would ring up even lower! Prices below what the website was for smaller hand tool stuff! (Large sets and power tools always matched the website prices.) How they stayed in business I do not know.
