My point entirely. How is ANYTHING at Sears.com a hot deal if you cannot actually get it?

This may be surprising... But most things on the site I can get, so it seems availability to you isn't universal. Hence the prior question, which sems to have been a veiled statement indicating your post should likely be in a different thread (thus keeping this one on topic with minimal chaff).

I went into a hometown store for my first time yesterday. It was amazing. They had a whole bunch of USA craftsman stuff: open stock wrenches and sockets, ratcheting wrench sets, mini wrench sets, etc etc. Mom and pop (owners) were super nice and helpful.

I bought a couple of Craftsman "autoloading" screwdrivers. Never seen them before. I usually don't go for this gimmicky kind of stuff, but they seem very well made (in Canada, not China!) and were only $6 each. Seems like it might be very handy, especially if I can swap out the slotted bits for some Robertson (square) bits. They look like this:

I hadn't seen that product before, but I think I recall seeing a somewhat-similar Craftsman product but with more of a pistol-grip orientation.

I have 5 or 6 of these screwdrivers. They are amazing for "light" work. I was super sad when they stopped carrying them. They replaced them with a much worse version. Well worth $12, I'd say they are probably still a good deal twice that. The last revision/model they sold in store switched one philips and flathead with two square heads the way you want.

If you are close to Sears or Kmart, that open up a lot of possibilities. Back at the end of last year, when they were giving out $5 freecash every week, I was buying a lot of non-tools. Socks, gloves, several lbs of Christmas candies (great deal - they were on sale after Christmas!), toys, etc. I happened to be on a trip, and arranged all of these for pick-up at stores that I was passing by.

Before Kmart near me closed last year, we used to get paper towels and other household items. Nothing fancy, but every little things helps.

I have one Kmart near me, I walked the store and there wasn't much I wanted(I try to avoid using points on groceries, and some things seem like they've been there a while). I've been buying sandpaper and painters tape from Kmart.

Here's the last time I did a picture of my Knipex collection, I did it for Instagram:

What's your opinion on the Knipex scissors? I thought they would be great, but haven't been that impressed with them so far. I'm most disappointed in the plastic handles vs. retail cost.

One tip is to play points. A lot of us play SYW points (plus combination of sale price and coupons) and use them to buy tools including Knipex.

I actually keep track of Knipex and SYW(though this is not up-to-date) with excel spreadsheets.

From KC Tool my current retail cost is $3,496. From Amazon the cost would be $2,943. On Knipex from SYW retail is $2,209(KC), $1,865(Amazon) with $385 out of pocket, that's $6.65 a pair.

At home I have an electronics workbench inside and garage workshop. Then I have a toolbox at work and two tool bags for different jobs. Some of them are just because but nearly all had a purpose in mind.

What's your opinion on the Knipex scissors? I thought they would be great, but haven't been that impressed with them so far. I'm most disappointed in the plastic handles vs. retail cost.

I like them but yeah they're pretty pricey for what they are...I've used them to cut leather, wood veneer and other things I normally wouldn't use normal scissors on but a pair of kitchen shears are probably the better buy.

How I manage this is basically searching what I might want and bookmarking it with the price in the title. Then once a week I go through the bookmarks and adjust if it goes lower. After a while you'll have a pretty decent list of things to buy and an idea on getting the most out of your points.

A lot of it was bought with $20 off $20 coupons(surprise points, now freecash) plus points, those coupons have dried up but I went about a year with them every week.

Also if you have an issue and return an item, you lose your coupon. If you call them they will issue your used coupon as points then you can use the points and coupon you already used with another coupon.

At the affordable price point they most likely come from a similar imported source which means few are repaired when past the warranty period. Unless the CM is incredibly clearanced out aka display, there are many other venders.

Yeah, it's been extended again, through Feb 10 this time. Unfortunately for those of us who've been hoping the end of that deal would mean the return of more/better up-front sale prices on tools.

Craftsman router should be alright.
I would think you could still get parts for them.
For that matter I have had my bosch and dewalt routers since the mid-late 90's
never had any trouble with them.
I think you'd be 0k with the CM router.

I'm not even seeing a shipping option. If it shows in stock at a nearby store, then you might want to call and make sure it's really available. If it's their display model, then it might be marked down lower in-store.

I've found that Sears normally stops showing an item on the website as being in stock at a particular store once that store is down to 1 left (presumably not even counting display models for the few products that have those, so when inventory is accurate, there could be up to 1 in package and 1 display model still there when the website makes it look like there's none). Unless they mistakenly thought they had more left than they really did (in which case you could still buy online because they didn't realize it was the last one), the last non-display model must be bought in-person, and a display model AFAIK would always need to be bought in-person (the order-pickup people would never grab a display model AFAIK).

After growing up with Sears and Roebuck I can now accept the fact that this company may very well go the way of the dinosaur. This company is by far the most difficult to deal with. I've got money in-hand and STILL Sears will not take it! I have points to spend and found some tools I can use on their website BUT each set is either NOT available for shipping AND not available for store pickup within 100 miles.

Its been pretty much trouble free getting stuffs online and do a store pick-up at the local Hometown store. I would estimate 90% or more of what I ordered is not in stock locally. Some of my stuffs were delayed around Christmas but I did not need it right away, so no biggie.

If the items are over $25, I got them shipped to my house directly.

The definitely good news is that I also see they have now extended the $25 free shipping threshold! It had been scheduled to end today (Feb 3) and go back to being $35 like it was until last fall. Now it will remain at $25 until at least May 5, 2018.

There are tools that are not available to ship to local store, so free shipping for over $25 is great news imo. Much easier to find something over $25 than over $35 to get free shipping.

Some look like decent deals... like 8" combo pliers (Model 02 08 200) at $35, the 8" cutters at $45 (Model # 74 08 200) and 10" Cobras at $60 (Model # 8728250)... but I haven't been keeping a close eye on them.

I'd also like to pick up a couple of the long nose pliers... however, they don't appear to be discounted as much... so I may wait on those/look elsewhere.

Anyone notice that Sears must have widened the search area for "store pickup" because now when I look at stuff, I have the right zip code entered, it's giving me a hometown store waaay far away that it never did before...

I'm kind of glad they did, it's too far for a regular trip but when I drive to visit a friend down south it's along the way... Apparently there seems to be a lot of USA hand tools still available there... lol. For that matter I still haven't been to the Hometown store in my friend's little podunk town either, keep forgetting to go!
