New stealth closure announcement:

Sears at Holly Hill Mall, Burlington, NC

The employees were told yesterday, Tue Dec 3, 2019, that the store wouldn't close until March 8, 2020.

But in local news articles published this morning, Dec 4, Sears corporate and the mall PR person are apparently telling the news that it's closing Jan 15 instead. I suspect that is the auto center closure date (it usually closes earlier than the rest of the store). It would be very unusual to only allow 1 month for liquidating a whole full-line store.

https://www.thetimesnews.com/news/20191204/sears-out-publix-in-at-burlingtonrsquos-holly-hill-mall

The Sears building and freestanding auto center will both be torn down and other things built in their place, to include a Publix grocery store.

I somewhat doubt they are going to make it to next year's holiday season.

Yeah, when Eddie first bought out the company in early 2019, I sure thought his financial juggling (which already had kept things from collapsing for years longer than some expected) would keep TransformSears afloat for more than just one additional year. But between the recent massive layoffs of buyers and product-adding people, and the quiet failure of the small-store concept that was supposed to be the way forwards (albeit without bringing most of our existing stores along with it), things really are feeling dire.

My only hope is that they manage to deliver my workbench (was supposed to arrive 2 days ago) before meeting their demise. In the meantime, I've picked up a free set of screwdrivers with the points from the purchase I still haven't gotten :lol_hitti

It seems like the bigger/heavier the item is, the more likely it is to be delayed. I believe that when people ordered those clearance SPG International toolboxes a year ago, there were some delays due to the vagarities of the freight trucking service that was used to deliver them.

Small items I've ordered shipped to the store have usually showed up ahead of the scheduled date, surprisingly.

A rare store *opening* announcement, for a new Sears Outlet location in Tulsa, OK.
(The Outlets were split off from Hometown in the recent merger stuff, are now owned by the same company that owns the Liberty Tax franchise, and are probably going to be renamed to something other than Sears Outlet in the near future.)

https://ktul.com/news/local/sears-returns-to-tulsa-with-outlet-store

" Sears returns to Tulsa with outlet store
December 4th 2019

TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) – A Sears Outlet has opened in Tulsa, about a year after the last of the city’s Sears department stores closed.

The Sears Outlet, near East 71st and South Sheridan, will sell “hundreds of items marked significantly lower than manufacturers' suggested retail prices,” according to a company news release.

Inventory will include new and reconditioned items, discontinued merchandise, surplus stock, and products with blemishes. The outlet will carry home appliances, lawn and garden equipment, mattresses, tools, and furniture.

The Sears at Woodland Hills Mall closed amid the company’s bankruptcy filing last year. A Sears at 21st and Yale closed the year before that.

The Sears Outlet will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except Sundays, when it will close at 7. "

I can see that business model working out well...

If anyone else is running out of things to buy over at Sears, I noticed the 1 1/4 HP Craftsman Belt Drive Smart Garage Door opener is down to $219.99 and not a hot deal, so should be able to get a 20 off 150 making it $199 with $100 back less any points you have, includes two remotes wifi enabled and back up battery. Very good price for a 1 1/4 hp unit, (Full disclosure I bought the 1 HP version of this last week for $169) if you're getting $75 back a day in points and dont have any other ideas this is an option. No free shipping on this (tho maybe thru chat) The Chamberlain 1 1/4 HP version is $269 over at lowes on sale so this is a great deal with points -- tho definitely overkill for most garage doors but should last a very long time.

In regards to Great Star Tools, I picked up a small set that appears to have been sourced from them to give as a gift, honestly the finish quality at the very least seems better than Apex.

If I run across a deal at Lowe’s I’m gonna buy a small 3/8 drove SBD Craftsman set and compare the Craftsman Ultimate from Great Star, Craftsman from Apex, USA Craftsman from just before the switch, and the SBD.

Cool. I used one of my 'Z' Great Star chisels a few weeks ago, and although the finish may not be quite as nice as the WF US ones on close examination, it still held up and did the job. If Sears had to lose their previous major tool suppliers and panic-switch to a random Chinese company, this one seems to have worked out surprisingly well. I think the big set of socket accessories I got is 'Z' also, and there was one misformed piece in there (a 1/4" bit adapter that 1/4" hex bits won't fit in), but I think that's the only complaint I've noticed.

When I was researching greatstar the other day I think I read that they were the largest tool manufacturer in Asia, they own Sheffield and Arrow fasteners. And a bunch of brands I never heard of but maybe you guys have. Here’s a link to some of their brands:

http://www.greatstartools.com/en/about.asp?info_kind=004003

“Great Star is a leading global developer, manufacturer, and supplier of tools, we are the biggest hand tool vendor in Asia.”

Edited to add another link about great stars American Brands...

Workpro I saw for sale somewhere, it sounds so generic I just immediately dismissed it as a store brand. I don’t even remember where it was.

Jorgensen and Goldblatt I’d heard of but only in old tools, I’d have just as soon assumed they were out of business until I saw the links, looks like Great Star is trying to resurrect them.

The largest problem with my experimenting with them is I do very little car work at this time of year due to weather so outside of snowblower tampering, or maybe chainsaw tuneups if I lose and trees/branches it’s gonna be a few months before I do any extensive use of any of the stuff. Even if Sears is still around there’s a good possibility some of the good deals won’t be.

The ultimate collection SAE set will probably see far more use than anything else in the shortest amount of time. I mean working on small engines I’ve really beat on a Stanley set and an Allied pro set I had been using for those repairs but being as cheap as it was it eliminates the need for using both sets since it basically has everything combined that each set was lacking.

I actually have the punches and chisels as both WF and Great Star, I purchased them last January as Great Star to use up Christmas points, then that deal for the heavy duty mechanics set with the 3/4 inch drive set and big wrenches showed up in March or whenever it was so I bought that. That set still had some WF punches, pliers, screwdrivers and a Vaughan sourced hammer. I haven’t actually used the great star ones since the other stuff was loose in a bag in the set and by the time I used any it was summer. I wasn’t going to return the great star ones since I think after points I paid $6 for the big set of them so they’re current sitting on top of my toolbox still in the package.

I don’t know if they used multiple suppliers for the new style pliers, some were better than other in fit and finish, I bought most of the WF ones available on clearance but I did get some of the Chinese ones at various points. There used to be a Sears at a sort of dead mall like 60 miles from here so I road tripped it and got a bunch of more obscure stuff like those weird wide jaw ones (can’t find them on the site now, they vanished again but look kind of like an oil filter wrench). I have a bunch of cars so I keep a small tool bag in each and they were economical enough for packalongs. Thing is unless I’m lazy, actually in need of them or go to the junkyard, I really don’t use the pack along tools enough to test long term durability.

Speaking of pliers, while looking for the Chinese version of the wide jaw ones it appears a bunch of the blowout sale ones are back again at blowout sale prices.

There might be a few others but I added a few to my cart for gifts and after trying to buy them I back out and it magically appears... the weird wide jaw pliers! Their website is flaky.

I would expect that to happen more frequently to stores that are profitable and sit on prime real estate. The Lansing, MI, store has always been a profitable store which shocked me to hear of its closing. My suspicions were confirmed to why it closed after talking with one of my friends from management; the store is closing because the developer/owner of the Frandor Shopping Center wants to develop the property Sears owns. So goodbye to Sears for most likely higher-end apartments. I wonder if they'll keep the SEARS water tower.... probably not.

Some of those people don’t understand the buying process, you can do 30, 60, 90 day out on payments depending on what is ordered from where. It’s pretty much the norm.

Eddie uses that Abacus Advisors as the liquidation team he’s apparently friends with them. They then use an outside company to do the actual liquidation. So if anyone isn’t paying anyone Abacus probably hasn’t paid the 3rd party. There were supposed to be slightly more closings from what I heard but Abacus didn’t have the ability to start as many stores spread out so far so quickly.

More details on the liquidators not being paid: Other liquidation companies have W2 employees, paid by the liquidation company. But Abacus, the one Sears uses, apparently has their workforce set up as 1099 contractors getting paid directly by Transform - or, now, not getting paid for a month and a half.

I just found TTI's invoices... they were filing as One World Technologies. Turns out they made a few other things for Craftsman besides the C3 cordless tools: the Sidewinder tape measures, and Evolv table saws (I didn't even know those were a thing). Possibly some other stuff in the past, that's just what they were still shipping to Sears in 2018. (I still need to go through that giant PDF listing products that were dead by the start of 2018.)

Wholesale price on the tape measures was about $5 for the 16ft, about $6 for the 25ft. I got the 16ft when it was on sale for $7.99 in early 2018, regular price was $14.99; and I got the 25ft on sale for $14.99 in early 2017, regular price $19.99, but it later went on sale for a lower price in 2018 too, more like $10. Sears hadn't even gotten thousands of them for free by then, like they did later in 2018 when the money dried up. (TTI had over $4 million in unpaid invoices, though most of that was for the C3 power tools.)

This should really get it's own thread, but that might get out of hand, so I'll just put it here.

What do you all think Hexen is going to do with his extra free time once Sears finally goes out of business???

(just funnin' with you Hex', my garage contents is becoming a testament to all your great posts here. Thanks!)

See if I pull up this link it doesn’t show them all which is weird. I can pull some up if I flip to lowest price and such.

Half the stuff has already shipped including one that claims it’s now unavailable and others that don’t even show up. A few that shipped are direct from warehouse ones that’s not far from here that didn’t show up in the search. Are they planning on restocking this stuff or something with different vendors?

One batch is in processing from one store but usually that just means UPS hasn’t picked it up yet.

Also when putting these in and randomly removing things that I had saved for my next points installments since many of these didn’t have free shipping and you can’t send them to stores I encountered another random glitch where it dropped the shipping from $22 down to $8 for no reason. This was a large order like $125 worth of random pliers since I was gonna give them to my grandpa, dad, brother in law and uncle.

I’ve never even heard of a setup like 1099 employees to work directly for you in retail liquidation. Seeing as that he just secured $200 million a few weeks ago to order merchandise, my guess is not paying is probably not a money issue at the moment but more likely IT problems like the ones I’m encountering on the website with no one who know how to properly do anything to rectify the problem. They’re probably having people get stuck in some weird limbo state in job transfer status.

The rest of the stuff is probably unsubstantiated rumors. WiFi is necessary for the rest of the in store systems to work and they obviously still work. I suspect it’s intentionally being shut off because the online sales are better, they just want to make price comparison more difficult if possible. Most people probably don’t use it anyway. Unless they want to keep employees off it as well, I could see employees tapping the wifi on their phones.

Abacus has a weird direct relation with Eddie and wouldn’t still be liquidating the stores if they weren’t getting paid.

When I can finally put Sears behind me, I will get back to trying to go through my large collection of DIY/construction books. :)

The WiFi thing was only about the 'guest' WiFi that customers and employees' personal devices use, not the separate network for the store systems, FWIW.

Sorry if some of you are getting bored with the who-made-what stuff. I haven't been posting every little detail I add to my list, just the more interesting things I come across, like how good of a deal Sears has been giving us on some things. I've been getting useful input here that helped identify quite a few more companies; this thread is where most of the few people who still have any interest in Sears products hang out, and we haven't exactly had very many deals worth talking about lately. ;) The mostly-finished list will be going in a separate thread for future reference in a few days.

I thought I posted this yesterday, but odd that I don't see my comment, so here it goes again.

I have noticed more often than not, if I have an item in my cart, and then get the red "item needs your attention" message that my item is no long available at my store, I switch from pickup to shipping, I then switch back to pickup, it let's me choose the original store (I only have one now) and allows me to complete my transaction. I have done this quite a few times lately. Yesterday I had 2 items in my cart, I fixed one doing this, and then the other showed at no longer available, I then did the same fix for that, and ordered both. :) With the lack of anything to buy anymore, glad this has been working for me. It's frustrating shop on a website where 90% of the items are not even available!

Anyone know the color temperature of the newer LED in this flashlight made in Taiwan? 3x brighter LED, but 8.5 hr runtime vs 25 hr with the older one.
(Yeah, I know there's more popular flashlight options out of China).

Craftsman 150 Lumen Flashlight $9.99

I have several of the Craftsman LED pocket lights (60-lumen), but I'm not a fan of the bluish tint.

The new photo is poorly cropped, which I guess was meant to hide the newer packaging.

It’s probably going to be bluish just based on all I’ve seen.

While it has nothing to do with Sears, go find one of these, they’re not uncommon, I found a NOS one just a year ago for $7. Get an LED bulb Of the color temp you like. This thing will literally last a lifetime. My grandma had two of these, it was the first flashlight I ever used as a kid. I’m 39 and it’s the flashlight I still reach for.

I realize Sears doesn't get a lot of customers anymore, but having a NOS item from 1948 is a bit ridiculous. :lol_hitti

Seriously though, I guess you have to regularly browse a place like Goodwill to find that Ranger as NOS?

Seriously though, I guess you have to regularly browse a place like Goodwill to find that Ranger as NOS?

Ebay is where I got it

I just realized they renamed the "Ultimate Collection" to "Ultimate Assortment".

So, in their lawsuit, SBD had a problem with the use of the word "Collection" by Sears? :headscrat

https://toolguyd.com/stanley-black-decker-sues-sears-craftsman-ultimate-collection-tools/

How the heck is that any different? I guess it can be used to discern how long it’s been sitting on shelves.

Maybe SBD should spend the lawsuit money on their Craftsman stuff, the Ultimate Collection/Assortment stuff is finished much better than most of the stuff they’re churning out.

Edit: they didn’t change the part number or anything it appears, just the label on the box

All they changed was the label and Metric is now blue instead of black. Imagine tying up the courts over this.

Would you help me understand whether I can pile up cash-back and credit card discounts?

Suppose I want to buy this $109.99 tool chest, local pick up to avoid ridiculous shipping fees.

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-26-...lerId=SEARS&prdNo=38&blockNo=38&blockType=G38

The offer says that if I use my Sears card, I get 10% off.

I have $25 in cash back points from a prior purchase that I'd like to apply.

I just got $15 in free cash, too.

Does that mean:

total cost I have to pay (before taxes) = $58.99 = $109.99 - 10% credit card credit - $25 in cash back - $15 in free cash?

AND I get 4 x $25 cash backs?

My next 2nd of 4 cash backs for $25 is due this coming Monday, 3rd two weeks after that, and 4th two weeks after that.

If I make this tool cart purchase, would that total $50 in cash back for the three overlapping cash back offers?

total cost before taxes = $154.10 = $199 - 10% credit card credit - $25 in cash back?

The 10% off on credit card may or may not void the $100 on $100 I don’t think it does this time around but the offers change constantly. It will tell you in the checkout before you complete the order. SEARS5OFF50 as a coupon code does not void the $100 on $100. You may be able to use both. You can definitely use the $25 off and still get the $100 on $100.

The $100 on $100 cash back can be overlapped they just have to be used within two weeks from when the installment hits the account. I have about 5 or 6 of these going now within a two week timespan.

yrly, thanks.

I can't find the terms, but does the $100 cash back for $100+ purchases expire tomorrow, 12/7/19?

If so, do I have until midnight tomorrow to buy this and get the $100 back?

Also, can I make two separate purchases the same day, $100+ each, and get two $100 cash backs, or is there a daily limit?

The limit is one per day on this promotion.

Usually your out of pocket has to be $100 before tax to trigger the $100, using a sears charge MAY mean your pretax total can be $90 plus tax but I’ve never tried that.

You will receive $25 tomorrow for a purchase made today and then every two weeks thereafter. I am currently getting $75 back per day, plus $50 every Sunday from some 52 week promotions earlier in the year.

It does work until Midnight central time. So you can still do one for 12/6 as of my time of posting and probably one tomorrow for 12/7 unless they do something weird like cut it off.

It may get extended too, Sears has a habit of doing that, or they might do $200 but do them in bi weekly installments of $20 to try and drag customers into the remaining stores during the slow months of the year.

Thanks.

I just noticed something strange. About 20 minutes ago, I put that tool chest into my cart, but it refused, saying it was temporarily unavailable. I just went back to the tool chest to look at specs, and it's available again. I was able to put it into my cart.

A tool set WAS in my cart, then I got a notice that pick up at my local store no longer has it in stock. I then looked at the tool set, and it was then available at my local store.

What's that about?

It’s been doing this weird stuff like that for a couple of days now.
