I was just in that former Sears Outlet yesterday and they received a TON of "new" merchandise from other outlet stores; I'm talking pallets of oven-sizes boxes full of merchandise from closed Sears stores. The sales clerk told me his back room is packed with the same filled boxes that need to be sorted through. Some of the items I went through were old-stock wrenches and sockets that were USA made so maybe there is some hope for quality items if one looks through it all.

As far as the tool boxes go, I will play the waiting game with them and score a deal. They always seem to be high on price at first, but mark them down regularly until they're gone; similar to store closing sales.

Good luck. Around me tool box prices have been on the rise, especially on the secondary market. OfferUp bottom of the line non ball bearing craftsman stack is a $300-400 item and sells quick. I don’t think they sold that high new. My guess is people will buy them at initial asking if the store makes up an original MSRP and a flashy “40% off” tag.

Lots and lots of people seem to have no idea harbor freight exists to set the floor on prices for new basic tools.

I went to mine before everything shut down a few months back and they did have lots of USA open stock. I snagged a few larger wrenches and hammers. FYI they have no idea how to price anything so I found it helpful to look up online prices on the outlet website and show them to get that price, otherwise everything rings up full MSRP.

Metro Detroit in the 70s-90s was SEARS COUNTRY ! The 3 large mall stores routinely placed in to the Top 10 of stores nationwide (Dad was in management there).

I think there is only one store left open. It is in a smaller mall. It was the newest store in the Metro area, probably less than 20 years old.

^I dont believe there is a sears mall store left in my state. There was one about an hour away and I caught it just a little too late as it was closing. Still got some good deals but it had been picked through.

That is the Westland store and from what I can find, it opened in 1997. I was just in it last week to pick up a grill and was surprised at how much stock it still had on hand. That mall may be small but that Sears is HUGE; easily double the size of the store we had here in Portage/Kalamazoo and that store was a decent sized, two-story building.

I can easily see how/why Sears stores in the Metro Detroit area were in the top rankings in the company. I miss those days.

Additional note: They stopped using SYW even before the name change, so you can no longer redeem any points there now.

Incorrect at the Sears store I shopped-at last Friday in Ft. Lauderdale FL, Sunrise Blvd/US-1; I just bought Craftsman combination wrenches, metric sizes 20-24 MM, regularly $99, I used my SYW points and paid $36 out the door. The store was almost empty, it's pretty-sad. I've shopped there for nearly 50 years. Not long-ago, I bought a bunch of Gladiator Premier welded steel cabinets for my current garage workshop, a Craftsman frame for a 2 ft X 8 ft workbench I topped-with a 1-1/2" solid wood top, covered with 3/16" steel; and four Craftsman rolling tool cabinets w/doors or drawers, which fit perfectly beneath the Craftsman 2 ft. X 8 ft. workbench.

I had broken a nearly-unused Craftsman pop rivet tool doing a fiberglass A-frame ladder repair, and I had an older Craftsman pop rivet tool that was broken and set-aside, years-ago, I went to a Sears store in Miami FL trying to get it warrantied, but since there were no comparable tools like it in-stock, nor any showing-up online when I checked, I was told to call a Craftsman warranty number. When I did that, I was credited points to my SYW account, and two days later, I used all of them I had, on the metric combination wrenches.

I've shopped at the Sears stores in Detroit, the Oakland Mall, 14 Mile/I-75, (more-recently), and also the Kalamazoo store many-moons (decades) ago. Sears has always been a favorite place to shop. I liked Montgomery Ward's too, when I was younger. M-W's Powr-Kraft tools were at some point made by Wright, including their famous 'tootsie-roll' rubber-cushioned ratchet. I have a set of 3/8" metric sockets I got new > 50 years-ago, they've probably been used on every internal combustion item I've ever-owned, just the 3/8" ratchet and extensions on SAE things.

Driftpin, I believe he was referencing Sears outlet and Sears hometown, not regular Sears. I have none near me to confirm.

Wasn't there an email from Shop Your Way at the beginning of the pandemic vowing to extend the expiration on all points? I don't think that ever happened for me, but I didn't have enough points to really worry about it.

I had 60 cents expire on June 30, and for some reason SYW just sent me an email saying they had restored my expired points. They gave me $16 for some reason. I haven't let that many points expire since I started my account years ago.

Stopped by the local Sears, and I see they are restocking the items that are still part of the tool department.

Though, someone decided to fill up the empty shelves with wet/dry vacs. A bored employee even joked that when he saw the big shipment, he wanted to arrange the vacs as a fort you could walk through. :Twitch:

Other than the Evolv clearance items, I think this is the only remaining item with a blowout price at my local Sears.

WORKPRO 15FT. RATCHETING TIE DOWN $1.94

Just picked up a Craftsman 41" wide x 24" deep 7 drawer toolbox for 344.99 at sears. The box is on sale for 379.99, add the $35 off 300 coupon ( type SEARS35OFF300 into the coupon box in the cart ) to get down to $344.99

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-41-8221-7-drawer-cabinet/p-A075482002

I've been looking for another toolbox for a bit now. Picked this one up over the weekend. Yeah its not the greatest box, feels a little flimsy but it will hold what I want it to. Having 7 full length drawers is nice for those longer items. If you're in the market for one it is worth a look.

do you know how build quality compares to their older 41" cabinets? i got a few of the 18" deep 8-drawers over the last couple years and theyre not bad, but 24D and all wide drawers sounds like a win for sure. what sort of latch system is on it?

That's actually a pretty nice cabinet, I got a chance to see one in person at a local store late last year. From what I remember there was a "lift to unlatch" type of system used, so you could grab anywhere on the handle and pull the drawer open. It was quite sturdy from what I remember, and I've had the upper and lower set set sitting in my Sears.com cart, waiting for a good deal. They've been lower than the current price, I remember at one point within the past 8 months they had a promo where you could have gotten both for less than $600.

I wish anything I would have completed one of my tool boxes. I have a complete bottom/middle/top all black roller bearing and I thoroughly like it. Bought another bottom box thats red with black drawers but never finished it. Think that was back in 2012 or so. Now they dont even sell middle boxes.

I would say it is about the same build quality and that's actually a bit of a downfall. With the extra rigidity that the double bank offered the box lost, the wider drawers feel a little flimsy. You can see it when closing the drawers, if you push it closed from the outer edges it tends to flex and bind up. When pushed from towards the center it works fine.

It has the soft close drawers so when closing it cushions at the end of travel. This one does not have any type of grip latch system but there is a little detent so the drawers to not just open, they must be pulled on.

IMHO as a toolbox this one falls a little short but as a lockable storage cabinet it is perfect for me. I'm able to put longer items like long clamps and slide hammers in here. The full width drawers allow me to arrange blow mold cases any way I want to.

Thanks tabs! It's been so quiet here that I didn't even know that my local Sears (1.2 miles) was closing until I started putting stuff in my cart and it showed up as needing to be picked up way across town (50 miles). I guess it will be free delivery from now on or nothing...more likely nothing.

i dont know how there are any sears/kmarts left. youd think a global pandemic would be the perfect excuse to finally close everything down. its not like the near 0% interest rates on loans would have deterred any corporations from investing in real estate

heres still hoping to a crazy cheap final sale once they do

I went in To the One surviving Sears in my area on Thursday. Tool dept was half the size it was, while the other half had work clothes and shoes. Lawn and garden had one D-handle transfer shovel. Odds and ends for the rest of the L&G dept.

Tool dept was pretty well wiped out. Pegboard displays had one or two per book. I can’t really say I noticed anything that was not labeled as Craftsman. I talked to the cashier who has been there 2 years and mentioned the dismal display of merchandise. Usually by now they would have started receiving the Xmas inventory.

Haven’t been in there since the beginning of the year I think. Mandatory Covid19 closing didn’t help either.

I have a Kmart in the town I work in and their tool department stock seemed to be on the uptick in the last couple days; it must have been a truck day in between last week and yesterday as there were much more items in stock throughout the store. Last week I was in the Grandville, MI, Sears store and the shelves are getting bare in the tool and appliance department again. The lower level with the soft-lines is still well-stocked as if nothing has happened. I'd say the upper level is at 30-35% capacity and is a shame as this is still a very nice store; it opened in 1999-ish and has so far avoided the down-trodden look that many Sears have. Back in June I bought a grill from the Westland Sears store and it is pretty much the same as the Grandville store. I can appreciate the design of both of these stores are they (Sears) went with a throw-back design with the art-deco styled exterior.

I was talking with one of the managers yesterday and confirmed 35 Kmart stores left. It is a far cry of over two-thousand back in the 1990s. Such a shame for both brands.

Wow that is so disappointing my mom worked at the one here in Virginia where I am until they closed up in 2016 I remember always going to Sears and Kmart as a kid and I loved looking at the tools and everything

Received a Shop your way email subject line "A surprise gift just for you!" With $10 in points redeemable for gift cards. Got $10 for pizza at Domino's. For anyone who has been ignoring sears emails lately. I just happened to click on it.

I received the same email a few weeks ago and used it for a Lowe’s gift card. Good idea to let folks here know not to quickly delete their SYW or Sears emails.

I didn’t see anything about it on SD or here, so assumed it’s very targeted. My shopping at Sears stopped completely when the free points through the SYW app stopped. Before that I was “buying” quite often. Wondering whether that’s a trigger for this email.

That must have been a targeted email; I never received it and I've been one of their "platinum" members for years now. Oh well. I don't shop as often as I nearly did once my local Sears closed but I still have a Kmart and a Sears close by in my orbit.

Did anyone catch the glitch in their prices of items in their cart on Friday? Everything I had saved in my cart for the last couple weeks was listed at $5.49 each no matter what it was.

Just visited the "local" Sears in Grandville for a warranty exchange on hand held sprayer (before they bite the bullet). Wow has it changed. So desolate.
...but the guy working, who has been their a LONG time, said if they were going to close it, it would have been announced by now, which makes sense so close to the holidays (then again, this year will turn that upside down). He said they are still getting trucks, and the store got a new GM.

With that supposed reassurance, he couldn't convince me a snowballs chance in hell that they will be around another 6-8 months, then again I may have said that last year.

My local Kmart which closed a few years ago got a new store manager from another state. 2 weeks later they announced the store closing. But I did notice that some items are back in stock that have been out awhile.

They bumped up the inventory at my Sears a few weeks before announcing it's closing. I believe it is planned to get the liquidation buyers, you know the people who buy stuff for ten percent off the full price despite it pretty much being fifty percent off online all the time.

They definitely blow in a ton of stock when they’re getting ready to close a store, but in this case I was referring to online items being back in stock. Better prices too. But haven’t seen a sywr offer in 6-7 months. Sad.

When our local sears closed the only reason I bought anything was b/c they had old stock that wasn't on their website anymore. I did get some craftsman clothes that I really like though, ended up buying some more of them from their website.

My Sears closed in Kalamazoo last November and I scored a bunch of old USA made wrenches and sockets that must have been the tools they used in the back room to assemble products for the floor. They didn't really bring in much from other stores for this liquidation except for screwdrivers and random NOS C3 tools. I don't think I have ever seen so many in my life but I managed to go through them and find quite a few Western Forge made pieces to add to my collection and a brand new 6.5" cordless circular saw.

I did the same thing at the Crossroads Mall Sears. Not sure if I was before or after you, but I got a mint condition USA impact driver, several Craftsman Professional screwdrivers, and a handful of WF adjustable wrenches.

It must have been around the same time. I remember seeing items like that on the shelves but I couldn't justify purchasing more of what I already had still in the package; the Battle Creek store closed less than a year before and I drove by it daily so I scored a ton of new USA made items. I probably went to the Crossroads mall Sears every day for the last month they were open to look for incoming shipments, a few of their long-time employees I had gotten to know over the years tipped me off so I knew where to look.

On a side note, I was in the former Sears Outlet today and observed a bunch of USA made single sockets in stock... May be worth it for some as they were $2-4 a piece.
