I was just in that former Sears Outlet yesterday and they received a TON of "new" merchandise from other outlet stores; I'm talking pallets of oven-sizes boxes full of merchandise from closed Sears stores. The sales clerk told me his back room is packed with the same filled boxes that need to be sorted through. Some of the items I went through were old-stock wrenches and sockets that were USA made so maybe there is some hope for quality items if one looks through it all.
As far as the tool boxes go, I will play the waiting game with them and score a deal. They always seem to be high on price at first, but mark them down regularly until they're gone; similar to store closing sales.
Good luck. Around me tool box prices have been on the rise, especially on the secondary market. OfferUp bottom of the line non ball bearing craftsman stack is a $300-400 item and sells quick. I don’t think they sold that high new. My guess is people will buy them at initial asking if the store makes up an original MSRP and a flashy “40% off” tag.
Lots and lots of people seem to have no idea harbor freight exists to set the floor on prices for new basic tools.
I went to mine before everything shut down a few months back and they did have lots of USA open stock. I snagged a few larger wrenches and hammers. FYI they have no idea how to price anything so I found it helpful to look up online prices on the outlet website and show them to get that price, otherwise everything rings up full MSRP.
