Here's my little anvil collection.

Umarked jewelers anvil and a Columbian small 8 pound anvil

Two railroad track anvils, the rough shape was there but I cleaned them up with a wire wheel and an angle grinder with sanding disc. I also used my 7 x 12 horizontal bandsaw to make some cleaner cuts on one of the anvils, too much grinding and sanding otherwise!

Large (about 178 pounds) anvil marked USA and IAF in raised letters. In good shape but I don't think its real old, can anyone identify it?

I bought an anvil and do not know what brand it is. It is marked 161 on the side and the number 119157 is on the foot. I gave $300 for it. Any ideas what I have?

Hi Fuelie,

Welcome!

The digits 1 6 1 don't work with the English Hundredweight System which will often be stamped on the side of an anvil.

From what I know, the number on the foot doesn't tell you much unless you know the Manufacturer.

Some good pictures, with close-ups of the sides and numbering could prove to be very helpful in identification...

Have you weighed the anvil?

FYI: This thread doesn't seem to get much attention here on GJ recently, not sure why.

But post some pictures and we will try to help.

I'm in the market for a 60-100 lb forging anvil if anybody knows of a good one for sale. Looking for forged steel, steel plate on wrought, cast tool steel, or steel plate on cast.

Vintage and brand name anvils only, no ASO Harbor Freight, cast chinese or Russian **** please.

PM with price and pics.

This is my one and only, a 152 pound Mouse Hole forge, of Sheffield England made somewhere between 1854 and 1874 by the stampings on the other side.

I was thinking the same. 2 1/2" Wide at bottom. 2 1/2" High. 1 1/4" Wide Rail. I gave 10 for it. Used it twice this week.

Yep it is brass.

VERY cool! Time for Mothers polish!

I have a brass anvil, Actually two of them, one is probably quite a bit bigger than that one at 2 lbs, and is the "Long" pattern, and another is similarly shaped and probably sized close to yours (Dime seems to fit the same way, and mine weighs 11-1/4 oz. or so...), only the round part of the horn on mine is more pronounced at the shoulder.

The 2 pounder is very brassy colored and polishes up well, and the smaller one has a reddish color to the tarnish, which sneered at Mothers the first time I tried it... (I haven't had the time/energy to go again...)

I posted pics of mine in this thread somewhere...

Good size for small light hobbyist work! whats' that puppy weigh, and are you going to clean it up? Maybe give it some detailed features?

Picked up this small anvil today. It's about 7" long and weighs about 3lbs. I couldn't find any maker's marks or stampings.

rshadd, that's a cool little anvil! (I must have been out of town when you posted that..)

I like that Fulton.. clearly has a separate top surface, I wonder if it was added later or from the factory?.

My father in law were hunting pheasant last year at an old farm house. There was a small anvil holding a door open to the barn. I told him I would love to get one of those (as I pointed to it), and he mentioned one at his fathers farm. He thought it was his grandfathers that was past down to his dad. I said I would love to see it some time. His father ran a 300 acre dairy farm, until he passed away. Now the land is rented out and the barns and milking parlor are used for storage. Fast forward a month or so, he came down to our house to spend the night, he had some dentist appt. He said there was a present in his truck, I went out there and didn't know what to think. Here was this 200lb plus anvil! Pics below show my progress and what I discovered along the way. I want to refinish a nice stump for it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I got a few other things that have been keeping me busy. Enjoy!
