i already baught it based on its weight and the way it rang out im just trying to date the thing it is an arm and hammer. logo is on the side in the one pic posted up above it weighs 172 pounds on my bathroom scale

THat is a hay Budden anvil. Also Vulcan used the arm and hammer symbol for their anvils. Hope this helps

ssffnomad, that is the smallest piece of rail I can recall seeing made into an anvil. Mine cart rail, or from one of those mini train parks you think?
I was thinking the same. 2 1/2" Wide at bottom. 2 1/2" High. 1 1/4" Wide Rail. I gave 10 for it. Used it twice this week.

It's what I use.I still have to find a source but I'm told by the older guys that a good sized piece of railway rail works exelent. Nice and heavy, harder than hard, rings like a bell. They also say all the work it needs is to mill the top flat and the ends which ever way you like.
