Lonestar: Nice find. I know the nice arbor presses don’t come up often. I watched Facebook and Craigslist for about 8 months before I found one for a price that I wanted to pay.

I picked up this press on a shop made stand a couple months ago when I was buying a job box from a guy moving his shop.

it's pretty big and still working on a permanent spot for it.

it's got a custom made plate, but i'll need to pick up a slotted one too.

The hole in the ram is actually really nice. Dad added one for interchangeable tooling, I use it a lot.

Agreed. Shortly after I got this one...another Dake 1 1/2 popped up on CL in my area. Feast or famine I guess. Think it's still available if anyone around Houston area needs one.

Thank you sir. I think I'll see how the mod works out as time goes on....but I think it's a good thing to do since you can always turn the ram around if you need the flat face.

The grommet installation kit came in.

Did a quick test on a shop rag. All make sense now.

Only comment would be that these grommets are best suited to be installed on something 1/4" thick. Anything thinner and the grommet has some extra metal that crushed down and could cause a sharp edge inside the hole. Anyway....I can install grommets now, so that's cool.

Here is my project, all done

I wish it wasn't missing the ratcheting assembly

The solid steel lever is NICE!! Made from 1144, it is 7/8" diameter and 32" long. Both ends are drilled and tapped 1/2-20, about 1-1/2" deep

I am going to pick up another press to rehab this week

Very cool. The round arbors are not as common as the square ones. Are you going to restore it a sell it? I don’t see many arbor presses come up on Marketplace or Craig’s list in my area. I felt pretty fortunate to find mine.

Not sure yet what the plan is for it......want to learn more about the press

No 3 means 3 ton?

Why Is it a Greenerd labeled "Armature"? As in the coils in an electric motor?

Yes, 3 ton with that handle config. And yes to give more clearance / arbor diameter for pressing bearings off of armature shafts, which can sometimes be very close to the windings, windings being large in diameter. I think you will find it a bit cumbersome compared to a standard press table. But servicable, especially for the home shop.

Here are a few pics of my Weaver motor service press. It still has the original cast stand and a four station brake lining punch and rivet set attachment. Also it has a screw running up the ram which is quite unusual that increases press capacity to 5 tons and will hold pressure on the work without you needing to hold the handle. It's also the only press I've seen with a swivel base....a feature I've never yet needed. Ed.

I wish I could get a decade or date narrowed down on mine

ram had a hole drilled in it with a grub screw. I couldn't find any evidence that Dakes ever came this way? :dunno:

...

I had a Dake that had the hole and setscrew just like yours so it may have been a factory option. I made quite a few ends for pressing bushings and bearings that would fit the arbor. Very handy. I made a square one that was just the size of the ram to use daily to protect the hole from getting damaged.

I've been looking for a small arbor press off and on for the past year. In last weeks search I found this press that, while small, was just too nice to pass up. had to freshen up the blueing and remove a bit of rust but was in really good shape.

The ram is a dovetail with the rack cut into the flat and the base was hand scraped, though quite a bit of wear since then. The base is 3" by 4"

Nice looking press.

Thank you for sharing.

I'm new to presses (and this forum) and I've just bought a similar-looking BTG No2.

- Do you know what BTG means and where they were made?

- Does the No1 mean that it's one tonne capacity?

Here's mine. Auction find from a while back. Came from Amstore, a point of sale display manufacturer here in MI that went out of business.

Its a 5/15 ton compound mandrel press. In "direct" it pushed 5 tons, and when you swap the pin over to "compound" it squashes down 15 tons.

To quote myself from the "new machine day" thread:

"Did a little googling, Dake corp purchased the Atlas Press Co. in 1945. I don't know how long they kept the "Atlas" branding, but I would put this press in the 40's for age.

The Dake catalog's picture from then shows this exact press in the literature. In 1946 they used the code name "Percy" for the model 5 on the shop floor. I guess we'll have to call this press Percy now.

They list the weight at 1780 lbs, and a list price of $453.00, which adjusted for inflation puts it at $6265.14.

Anyone curious just look at toolarchives.com and they have an excellent scan of a 1946 Dake catalog."

We use it mostly for broaching keyways and pressing bearings. Occasionally straightening stuff and general pressing tasks.

The daisy wheel was missing when I originally purchased this press, so I had a few laser cut from 1" plate. The ram stops a tad under 3" short of the table without them, so when they are all there stacked up the press won't bottom out.

I cut a variety of different profiles and cutouts, and they can stack interchangeably so you easily change the shape of the pressing surface.

Really nice big 5/15 Atlas dr clyde. I passed on a big Atlas several years ago and another last summer. Both had pretty significant casting breaks but seldom as I see them I may have to settle for the next one that comes along.

I bagged two Dakes a few weeks ago. A Model 0 and a Model 1. Both missing their plates but otherwise in perfect working order. $200 for the pair. Here's the Model 1. The other's already taken to bits and is half way to being repainted.

Here is a sad Greenerd No.3 that I got for $50.

Worked on it a week, as it was jammed. Finally removed the pinion and...

Holy smokes. I've never seen one broke across the back. That would not be my first guess for breakage. Bummer about it being junk. :(

I could be wrong, but that doesn't look like a break, looks more like a high water mark?

I think he's more concerned about the trashed rack and pinion?

Correct. I started electrolyzing just the head, then bought a 35 gal trash barrel. The casting is fine. The rack and pinion are thrashed. The pinion has one tooth gone, and the ones one either side are very thin. I am a feared there’s no coming back. Though the PO has another with a broken head casting that I hope to buy.

Hopefully he passes it along at an apologetic price...

Yeah, it also the first one I've seen that doesn't look like it sat outside in the rain for 20 years. Would a 3R be useable for pressing out control arm bushings and ball joints?

I'd rather pick this up instead of the C clamp type presses.

Got this Greenerd from a local company; price was right since I only had to transport it. Excellent condition once I got it apart. I used a roller for the lettering as my freehand leaves a lot to be desired.
I've been looking for a plate for it but they are hard to find.

+1 on paint rollers. A lot easier than using grease. The daisy wheel is hard to come by. Of course, you can still buy them from Greenerd, but you might need a bank loan. A gentleman over at OWWM had some made a couple of years ago. Not sure if he has more. They are 7.5” wide. I have located one two hours away, and it is for sale, but the owner is selling a bunch of his deceased dads stuff for mom, and can’t get there and won’t send pictures and can’t ever seem to answer even the simplest questions. Gotta love on line sales.

On a lighter note, I got the arbor press with the broken casting for $100, and the parts were all good. Bought a fan from the PO for $10 while I was there, and sold it on the bay for $85. Love this trade.
