What's everyone's opinion on Proto 724L and 720L? Theres a guy local to me selling the pair for 125.00. I know older Proto stuff is nice, but not sure on the newer stuff.

I don't have any that big, but the newer/smaller Proto adjustable wrenches I do have are still good quality as the old stuff IMO.

Boss bought me a PROTO 12" wrench, and it looked like a club compared to my earlier models.

I'm a PROTO guy too, love my Proto tools, but that new wrench looked exactly to the T like a Cresent model of the same size, like PROTO subbed out to them to make some wrenches.....sad if you ask me, and I sure hope it was a limited run.

The Jaws on my older 12" PROTO are quite a bit thinner, and open up wider.

Hope this is a limited run, or something...I e-mailed PROTO, but I've never gotten a response.

I would imagine the bigger stuff should be as good as the older-bigger stuff, at least I would hope so. I have purchased some metric impact sockets since then, and the quality was and is as good as I could imagine.

I buy PROTO tools for work every chance I get, if they give me a choice.

Here is a little oddball adjustable I got a week ago Sunday in a huge buy of tools;

The threaded adjuster is split an slides down each side of the handle/lower jaw part. Not a single maker's mark or number anywhere on it. The screw (I had to replace the non-countersunk bolt and nut that was on it...) keeps the user from screwing the nut off the end of the two threaded "halves". I'll use some muratic acid to clean the plating off the screw so it doesn't look so out of place...

I had relegated this to the small pile of "Broken tools" from the buy, as it was stuck and would not adjust. I got it apart without too much difficulty and had to both straighten the jaws (they were twisted to each other a bit) and hone the "ways" a bit as it had been over torqued and had a very slight set that made it bind in the last 1/2 inch of closing.


Anyone have a clue who made this puppy? it is only about 6" long in the closed position, and identical on both sides except for the countersink vs. 10-32 threads for the screw.

It was clearly manufactured and as a forging as well. and the fit, finish and quality are all top drawer, and I would guess it's from the turn of the century, to maybe 1930's at a guess.

My Dad had a 10'' chrome adjustable. It had a push/pull nut on the screw, that would lock the jaw in position. Sadly, he's gone now, and so is the wrench.
Anyone have one or know what I'm tapping about?

And the 8" Craftsman in these pictures was one of my first three tools. (Also a pair of slip joint pliers and a screwdriver with 5 changeable bits. I still have the pliers too, and the bits for the screwdriver but the plastic handle went bad and crumbled.)

Here is my collection of adjustable hammers wait no I mean adjustable wrenches .
First picture is of my Proto adjustables which consists of from the top down of a 15in 715s, a 10in 710s,and a 8in 708s x2 with the second one being a LA marked wrench and for the smallest in the photo a 6in 706s.

This picture has a 12in Mac, a 10in Blue point, and a 8in Utica select lock.

The final picture has two 8 inchers a Williams made in Sweden and a Wright made in Spain.

Sent directly from the Snap On Kool Aid factory.

Ever see one thats adjustable and automatic? this little guy springs open one direction and is tight the other; almost as fast as a wratchet and fits tight on the pull.

I have a few, but I rarely use them, unless I have no other option on an open end, or box end wrench. My favorite one is a 12 inch French Peaugot wrench, from the same people that make the cars. Its end is actualy a 3/4 inch box end. My other ones are US made Crescent, Proto, and a massive 15 inch Blue Point.

My late Father was a 'hands-on' Mechanical Engineer, who hoarded everything known to mankind.....especially tools!
His....er....collection of adjustable wrenches (4" to 12") included: P&C, Utica, Williams, Proto, Cman, Crecent, Diamond, Fuller, etc.

TjoFrasse, you have two that have a plier type jaw on the other end, what are those for? Where did you get them?

I could make use of a really big one. I use something similar to roll fenders on demolition derby cars, how convenient to have it in one tool. That's pretty neat.
