Got the ball pein all cleaned up. Took about 5 minutes with some light steel wool and wd-40. This is a favorite find is the weekend for sure!

The head says

Reg. Us
BT

We know that BT is the manufacturer code for vlcheck.

I included a picture with its other 2 stall mates. All have original handles. The wire whipped one is one I found cracked slightly and since it’s not ever getting used I glued the crack and applied an old time repair to it

Had a decent long c weekend! Scored this amber handle hack saw, various sockets and this uncommon merit marked special ford connecting rod wrench. This is pictured in the 1942 catalog. I saw it and almost left it but something told me to grab it! I’m glad I did. I know a few prolific collectors and they don’t have any merit wrenches on this page

Smoke, GJGS timing!

Scored this amber handle hack saw,

I thoulght I had one as well today, but while the amber grip panels appear identical, the MW version has a slightly different frame; I think still the same Mfg for both Sears and MW:

Agreed. Whoever made it probably made it for Sears as well as the competitors undoubtedly!

I found this amber handle Craftsman screwdriver yesterday at an estate sale. Although technically not long C it must have been made at the end of that era.

I thought of those (Smoke’s) as Atkins made. Check out the catalog page Don posted here.

Interesting: from 1969 on BF is supposed to be "BF = probably Daido, possibly KTC, Japanese made"

So BF Pre WWII would be Atkins

One for the "Craftsman Mfg thread"

We actually had a discussion on these very saws earlier in this thread. I believe the consensus was the two Amber handled Craftsman saws were made by Millers Falls and Atkins. (Atkins being BF) They were both sold at the same time.

One only came as part of a kit, the other was sold indepdently.

I plucked this out of a toolbox at the Friday flea. Fairly innocuous find. Dropped it in my bag, and it was way down my list of personal interest behind the C.E. Jennings box, the W-W SPINTITE roll-up, the Williams CROMAL set, and even the Magnaglass and the casket key. As I was cleaning it just a little whole ago, though, it hit me that I don't think I've found one before. Then it struck me that I'm not sure I've even seen one before. So I search the thread. No hits on drag link bit. Now I'm scratching my head for real. Back down the basement I go to check me BE set. No drag link bit. Circle-U set? No drag link bit. Then I hit the catalogs. 1939, 1941, 1942, and 1948. Nope, nope, nope, and nope. None shown or listed. Now I'm really scratching my head thinking, "Did Craftsman not sell any sets with DLB's?" And, "Did someone mod this out of something else?" Can't think of what that might be - and I know that New Britain made DLB's, because I have a couple.

So what's the story?

I have a pretty nice/ non ground down one. They were sold separately from sets and alot of them were ground down over the years and junked.

All drag link bits, from any mfgr, tended to get grinded on. I just don't remember seeing a Crafty before and none turned up on the search. So they weren't shown separately in the catalogs, either? Or I just missed them?

I'll have to look. I swear they are in the catalog but don't quote me on it. Maybe someone else can chime in? I can't access my catalogs now

In the catalog in 1942 as well,EDIT for clarity the 42 catalog entry looks just like the '41. Then they disappear from the catalogs until 1949 shown below:1690143123458.png

Dang, I must have looked right past that -I remember seeing the stud remover and was surprised they had that style back then (I bought one in the mid 70's )

I have a different 42 catalog I guess:

Not next to the Stud extractor:

CM cat no DL.JPG

but here they are:

Catalog I posted above with red background is 1949. See EDITS above in other post. 1941, 42 look just like the 1st pic and your pic Outlaw. And as near as I can tell they disappear from 43-48 and are obviously a different mfg in 1949.

Prior to 1949 Sears had contracts with new Britain and others. In 1949 they moved to Moore Drop Forge exclusively for their hand tools.

I only have hinsdale version. I don't think it would go for that kind of $.20210503_124140.jpg
If you ever want to sell that old hinsdale please let me know. I have been trying to complete that set for a while now. It appears to be as rare as the craftsman version

Great research gents. I learned something.

On the subject of odd-ball non-drive tool amber handled tools..I probably posted this before but here's an amber handled claw hammer with the Dunlap brand. I've not been able to spot it in any catalogs.

If I gotta see his collection again just like FB...it's like rubbing salt into the wounds..LOL
I have scrolled through the post on here several times over. I have a lot of stuff but there are items on here of which I am truely envious. If I can ever figure out where old tool guy lives I’m going to be knocking twice a week just to look.

I got to get the amber handled hack saw all cleaned up! It came out pretty good in my opinion. Not perfect and you can tell it was a user but to have it survive with grips intact is not the easiest to find these days!

So pristine that as I started inspecting every single piece to make sure it was all there and all Craftsman, I was thinking it was going to be impossible to find something to haggle him down on. Lo and behold, I discovered that one of the taps is a /G\T/D\, and I felt a little sheepish even trying to make a small case out of that for some leeway.

Thanks.
Ok so this conversation has come up again 5 years later. If you still have the set could you take a pic of the inside label so we can read it
