Wow, that’s a fine looking wrench set. YOU ****!

This must have been planned. You guys both brought suckage today.

It wasn’t planned [emoji23] they both just arrived today [emoji23] we both were aware of each other’s purchases but didn’t post until the item is in possession. We do enjoy trolling each other by sending each other links to eBay items we just bought [emoji41][emoji51]

1934 Craftsman #5881 DBE wrench set

From the 1934 Catalog:

1934 DBE wrench set.jpg

AA has a short write-up about these but uncharacteristically shows only one wrench and offers no opinion on who made them.

1934 DBE wrench set AA.jpg

First off, a big shout out to Mr. X who casually mentioned seeing these on eBay this past week then later sent me a link to the auction after I whined about not being able to find the listing. Fortunately for me (and unfortunately for the seller) these wrenches were buried in a custom made tool case and almost no mention was made of them, else they would have sold for MUCH more than the winning bid of $15.99.

Needless to say, I am stoked to find such a rarity in nearly perfect condition, complete, and cheap.

Brian
Nice set. I have seen a similar DBE wrench set that does not have an OEM name on them. I will have to see if I can find them. I know Todd was collecting a set of them and believed that they may have been Truth made.

I've got a few dbe's laying around that also are similar but the similarity may be mostly in the unique rounded recessed panels. I'm sure most of mine are "Wilde" brand tools and one is marked "Truth". I'll dig them out and compare them to Riley's.

Yeah, Smoke tries to drag me into his trolling schemes, but I play dumb and make him call me.

Now who *****? Not only do you have this rare minty set but you took it on top of an 8 drawer roller with 2 deluxe rollers in the background [emoji23]

That may very well be true, but these pictures don't really show much of the rolling cabinets mentioned. I'll try to do a better job of zooming out next time to give the full effect!

I like the whole shebang! What is the make on the other pieces in the guy's custom kit?

I agree! Much to my irritation, however, the seller packaged the lot poorly and it all came apart en route, further damaging the woodwork that was almost certainly custom made.

The hex drive socket set is Indestro (nicely stamped on the socket box), the small DOE wrenches, pliers and monkey wrench are unmarked, and the feeler gauge is KASTAR. The most interesting item (outside of the Craftsman DBE wrenches) is the metal box, which is embossed "Oakland".

That's a shame, but not damaged too badly. Kind of a neat box (and accompanying story...) to keep the DBE's in while you search for the original holder.

I tend to agree with you on it being custom made, although we do see wooden inserts in steel cases (I have three of them...) with some funky conventions (those snaps are wild) in that era. The tools are probably not original to the box, but a few might could be. The pliers are Vlchek made, btw. Very commonly supplied in car kits in the 30's. They are known for their gullwings handles, but they made both styles, and the regular handles are usually unbranded. Everything looks like it may have been put in there by an enterprising young man. Putting on my Sunday paper puzzles hat, it looks an "S" wrench is missing, as well as a flat file and file handle maybe?

Agreed.

Oakland was a make of automobile from 1908 until 1931.
When it became Pontiac, the name of one of its later cars.

That embossed logo was Oakland's trademark.

I thought you might have been excited about it since it was early snap on . Also we were talking about a meet up and since I have hit pretty much no sales this year, I was more than willing to call [emoji23]

Oh, I am just giving you a hard time Smoke. I always miss texts, so I had no idea of what you were talking about at first. But it is very cool and you got it for a song!

And we do need to do more meet ups, with ORC, Provincial, Rileysan, you and I. Just need to find a good spot...

Here's my modest contribution.

A 1/2-drive torque wrench; picked it up a while ago ($20) with the terrific box. The vendor remembered it being his Grandfather's who he believed also made the box. Great shape.

Came with an awesome bit of dirty paper: "Craftsman Torque Chart". The bottom left has a date code of 1500-4-6-49, which makes me think the torque wrench is c '49.

The indicator is slightly off, does this matters much?

Thanks!

Matthew

Matthew, Calibration for beam torque wrenches consists of bending the indicator to zero. the movement of the main bar's moment arm is what does the measuring. The skinny part is just a pointer.

Nice find!

That looks like a factory box to me. Look at the head bracket and the clasp. And the wrinkle paint looks like everything else from C-man of that period.

I was helping my buddy delve in his dad’s cavern of wonders today, and came across this, which I had seen before, but not noticed the logo. He’s starting to come around to the idea of keeping more of his dad’s stuff.

Show your "Long C" Craftsman!

Got this drill today with the chuck for $1! It is dirty but should clean up! Made by Westinghouse. I wish it had the box but oh well. This thing is pretty heavy. No wonder push drills were a thing[emoji23]

Picked this up today:

Not exactly expensive, but with a decal like that there was no way I was going to leave it behind. And I am not even a Craftsman guy. Also, it is in better condition than my Heritage labeled one.

You and Beamer keep saying you guys are not craftsman guys but I have seen some of the not common craftsman ratchets you guys have[emoji23] you are both “selective” craftsman guys. You guys both have good stuff![emoji23][emoji23]

That logo decal is amazing. I've passed on many of those torches but that thing would have come home with me. Nice find!

I grabbed a 1949 catalog at the flea market this morning. It’s interesting... the cover has the long C logo, but all the toolboxes inside are heritage badged. The tools pictured are mostly =craftsman= but there are some long C pieces pictured as well. Sometimes within the same socket set. Definitely a transitional year.

You are correct, that was a transitional time for their hand tools. There are long c logo items in their catalogs up until the 60’s. They were not as concerned about using the most current logo back then as folks are now. Nice find by the way! I prefer paper copies to the digital format if I can find them cheap.
