Show your "Long C" Craftsman!

I had a great "Long C" day today. This was a deal that was some time in the making. Another collector somewhat close to me was kind enough to liberate some goods from PA for me. The old grinders never cease to amaze me. As cosmetically challenged as this one is (which will be remedied), it runs like a dream I'm particularly excited about the flex shaft grinder. Had to go back to the 1931 catalog to find it. It was made by Walker Turner and sold without a motor. I may put an older repulsion induction motor on this thing and use the Companion (which the PO put on this) on a DP. The combo wrench set is wartime. Unfortunately, the outside of the clamshell isn't in nearly as good condition as the inside but I'm happy with it.

Dang, any collector worth their weight would be excited to have just one of those items but you got 4 of them[emoji15] my favorite is the bench grinder! Which weighs a ton!

Great finds, Scott! I've never seen a flex shaft grinder posted in any forum, let alone in person.

Thanks and yes!! I always get a kick out of mechanics in white lab coats and homeowners working their tails off in suit and tie. Apparently, at some point they were allowed to remove their jackets!

I know where there are 2 of those grinders and neither person will sell them [emoji23] the flex shaft polisher is by far the rarest item in that photo but I would be quite happy with any item[emoji23]

Unless there's one of these in the Smithsonian, I'm pretty confident that this No. 5533 line cutter (1" tube capacity), which I picked up at the flea market this morning, is the cleanest one on the planet at this moment.

I couldn't find another posted on this thread, so I did a little homework on dating it, and discovered that it is a good example of one of those tools with a Long C logo that stretched into the 50's. These cutters had a rather small simple key-shaped thumbscrew in the 40's all the way through 1948. The first catalog to which I have access in the public domain that shows it with a big fat knurled knob is 1952 (page 44).

I'm glad I took it apart, though, because I found a little raised OEM logo inside in the recess for the scoring blade clip spring. Newton, in New Haven, CT. See Pic 5.

Thanks! It was in a 1950's Snap-on box that literally sold as I was looking through it. The vendor came over and said to just leave things out of it as I was looking because someone had just bought it and he had to empty it, anyway. The vultures were hovering to my left and right, and the buyer came over and started grabbing stuff, so I snagged this and the RIDGID and Cornwell pouches without even knowing what was in them!

Incidentally, as I was scrolling through catalogs looking for the pipe cutter, I made an interesting discovery by accident. You guys know I'm a Kulp-Dellinger (K-D) nut, which made it all the more enjoyable to find that K-D made Fulton-branded No. R-4671 ignition pliers set, linked here.

Well, guess who was making some of their 40's era DUNLAP-branded piston tools?!

And before you start to question the exactness of that valve keeper match, methinks the artist rendering took some liberties to show the wire spring on the other side.

Nice find Lugz! I have two of the pipe cutters in the Craftsonian but neither is in nearly that good of shape! I'm incredibly jealous of the valve and piston tools and yes, the Sears artists took a LOT of liberties with their drawings. Drives me nuts sometimes.

Thanks, JoCo. To qualify and perhaps mitigate your jealousy, they are not DUNLAP branded. I grabbed those out of my K-D drawer. But K-D clearly the maker, was my point.

I saw that listing Don. It's interesting in that the latch is fixed to the same side as the socket tray. Every one I've seen has the latch on the opposite "wing" of the clamshell. That's a unique "factory mistake" artifact.

I found the last piece for my big circle H set today. The speeder. Judging from the clip on the box lid, it’s supposed to have the rotating center handle, but beggars can’t be choosy.

Looking good! Those sets had a variety of speeders that they could of been had with so yours is technically correct but I get the wanting to have the speeder grip as well!

They did that on purpose so that every time you open the box, all of the tools dump out. Ask me how I know.

In an odd but pleasing bit of coincidence, this morning I found the circle h speeder we were talking about just yesterday. It came with some other circle h stuff that was in a plomb chest I picked up at the flea market. I didn’t even realize the luck until I got home and went through it. The ratchet is pretty cool too. I don’t know much about it, but I know I don’t see them nearly as much as the reversible style long c.

Similar, but mine is circle h and has 3 rivets. It always amazes me how many variations are out here. Interestingly enough, I found two 1/2” plugs in as many days. One marked craftsman and one marked Made in USA.
P.S. I checked my set and the rest of that circle h stuff I found is extra if someone needs it. I’ll probably just keep the speeder and the ratchet.

They made the one rivet for a minute after the c series (4 rivets), then the 3 rivet as the one rivet was not so great. I think there may have been a 3 rivet round handle as well, but I have not come across any of the 3 rivet versions yet.

I waited for the day to warm up and applied one fairly thick coat then waited for the magic to happen. It takes quite a while to fully dry. I haven’t cured mine in the oven though.

You could use a heat gun to speed up the process, and maybe get it a bit warmer than the sun, too.
