Can I post up here to simply find a good home for a very well taken care of CM Long C , Circle H, 3 inch 3/8" drive extension? I believe it is raw steel. I don't think it was used at all.

I bought a hodgepodge of about 30 pounds of high grade vintage USA handtools (to acquire the dream 1942 ish warrime SK 1/2" ratchet ) and this little guy was about the last thing hiding in the corner of the box. It was STUFFED with great little odds n ends like this.

Because of my Dad, I've been a lifelong CM guy, but I can't keep this little dude. it wouldn't be right. I envision this completing someone's dream vintage tool set. IF this belongs in the Classifieds, LMK and I'll head there. I just figured it will find a proper home from this platform. The thing is a sight to behold...The photo does it no justice. About how old is it?

My friend, would you like to have a second chance at it after I am done with it? Depending on what is going on, I may use this example to carefully dissect, analyze for the video series, and repair/reassemble it.

If it is impractical to open and/or I can find another suitable substitute on the way, which I've already had to do with a few of these ratchets. There have been situations where a "stunt double" was needed for a few that are just too rare to risk opening, so I used an analog from the OEM.

I already have one of these in a condition that blows the doors off of this one. Honestly, I was surprised to see this one go for the price it did too, despite its flaws.

Anyway, let me know if you would like me to keep you in the loop. Should you be interested, you are welcomed to buy it for that price between the two of us. If I list it on eBay, I have a funny feeling that one will go for more than what I bought it up for; yet, I would rather have it go to someone who has helped me over these long years.

You would be surprised by how common it is to find these pieces in this kind of condition. What really ***** is that these are already so difficult to find at all, let alone one that is pretty AND working. The mechanism in these is prone to failure from continued use, so much so that Blackhawk made modifications to the mechanism to prevent premature failure, improve engagement, and avoid random shifting of direction (if those examples using the drive system were sans a selector).

The plating practices back in this time were fairly spartan, whether it was nickel, cadmium, or chromium per my late father-in-law. He ran his own professional plating business for 30 years before he died and was instrumental in affording me as much knowledge as he could share about the topic. In fact, his passing is one of the reasons why the new video series has been so delayed. Somethings just take the wind out of your sails for a while. At least we've been able to keep his legacy alive by keeping the business going for now, keeping all of the staff employed, and doing some great custom plating.

Anyway, my wife describes it as if they got the "lemon zest" style treatment, just enough to get the job done.

He ran his own professional plating business for 30 years before he died and was instrumental in affording me as much knowledge as he could share about the topic.

What was the name of the business and where was it located? if you don't mine me asking.

My father was the youngest in a family of 10, eight brothers and 1 sister, and he was an uncle four times over as soon as he was born. His eldest brothers started Durable Plating in Cleveland. He went a different path - Merchant Marines before the war, Navy during WWII, and a draftsman for a structural steel company after. But I was close with my cousins, I was inside the plant a few times as a child, and I inherited some interesting mementoes! Ducks and Pinups playing cards! Those were the days.

I received the ratchet today. It works fine. It just needed a little rust removal and careful lubrication. Despite its scars, she actually works as intended.

I will need a few days to think about if or how I will approach opening the mechanism. I'm still waiting on my alternative to arrive in the next few days as well.

That thing has been listed for a long time now. I've never been able to find the "Add a Tool" system in the catalogs. I've seen a few cast offs with that logo but never that complete of a set. As I recall there's a band saw sitting on the floor that goes with it as well. I'm guessing that it's early 1930s, right after the Walker Turner era. The very early 30s catalogs do show a WT set up similar to that. If I had the floor space I'd have made the seller an offer the first time I saw it.

I gathered the missing pieces to fill up these boxes. Do any of the Craftsman experts know when the sets changed to all 6 and 8 point sockets?

Good question Don. The first time I see a midget set with only 6 and 8 point sockets is 45 in the unmarked Plomb ratchet midget set. The 43 Spring and Summer still shows 12pt sockets in the midget set. The 44 Spring and Summer doesn't include midget sets but they're offering individual 1/4d sockets in both 6 and 12pt. My best SWAG is that the 12pt midget sockets demise came with the end of the war.

Thanks for checking. It’s interesting that the GMTK 1/4” drive specification changed away from 12 point sockets towards the end of the war in 1945. Possibly some of the manufacturers took note and changed their offerings to match.

I did a deep dive on that subject several years ago on G503.com. I collated several different references, including prewar catalogs, wartime catalogs, and postwar catalogs, GMTK specs from several different manuals throughout the war, and collected specimens. With detailed charts, observations, and commentary, including some chicken-and-egging on the number of points. I don't remember including Craftsman, per se, but it did include NB. Photos have the dreaded Photobucket overlay, but it doesn't obscure the data in the charts. No, I am not re-doing the charts.
