I don’t have much in the ways of Bonney stuff but I thought I would share what I do have.

You know, I thought I was the only one to keep Bonney "tool pieces". I've got a few combos missing the open ends, and a flare/box wrench missing the box end. Some heat shrink tubing or Plasti-Dip - and I've got a usable tool! :giggle:

Both the broken ones where in a box of stuff my grandpa bought at an auction. There was another Bonney something in that bag that he gave to one of his Friends to modify for something.

Wow; I was watching this c1920s 3” Garage Vise eBay auction.
The horned jaws were the most intiguing, but to me inexplicable, components. Looked like everything else was original, but those jaws seem like they must be custom, and I’m not clear what they are for. Not for hammering on like the single horn on an anvil…more like needle/chain nose pliers…for something held firmly, but with access both above and below the jaws…connecting chain links, maybe.
Anyway, I think the sale sets a new precedent for high bids on Bonney Garage Vises!

I would like to see the jaws cleaned up, if the buyer has any connection to this thead.
But they look to me to be custom-made for this vise. The steel jaws have a groove mating to the iron, just like in the catalog illustrations, and the groove continues through the horn, so the horns are not welded on, but are integral extensions ground from (apparently) original jaw stock longer than the 3” standard length for a model 830.
If they were custom made for a different vise or modified from wider standard jaws from a different vise, I’d expect some shenanigans with the screw holes, but these look spot-on.
The copper-over-gray paint is also interesting. If either (or both) coat(s) is original (I don’t think color is specified in the 1923 or 1926 catalogs), it suggests the jaws are original, as it extends onto them.

I’ve been out of the tool stalking for sometime, and received a telephone call out of the blue from a guy I bought a handful of tools from a year and a half ago. He said he found some tools he knew that I’d be interested in and saved them aside for me so I felt obligated to go and have a look… This is some of the stuff that came home with me

outofbounds, nice razor knife (carpet knife?). I had one like that and it mistakenly got mixed up in a box of tools that I sold a few years ago. Been looking for one ever since, and thats the first one I've seen. Great score.

Must be made by Stanley. I’ve seen them many times, but my first Bonney branded one.

Here is a Bonney 1114 that I found recently. This is marked USA, without the triangle under the Y of Bonney, Quite different from the (?1951?) only other one posted way upthread. No pockets, hex bottomed jaw, not curved

Nice high polish, not a needed wrench, but it was pretty. Have not found it in a catalog yet.

I came across a Bonney razor knife some time ago, here after I spiffed it up.

Finally got this cleaned up and working. After almost a week in evaporust, I was finally able to get the jaw unstuck and take it apart. It was rusted solid, but cleaned up surprisingly well.

Speaking of HERCULES, I was wondering if this little screwdriver was a BONNEY tool. MADE IN USA is the only other marking.

1677449891106.jpeg

I see quite a few little screwdrivers with that style handle and recently decided to bring a few home. The two on the far end of the lineup are marked VACO and the Phillips tip says Lic. 9.

1677450069655.jpeg

I was excited, thinking maybe it said Lic. 8, thinking that'd be a possible link to BONNEY, but I'm pretty sure it's a nine.

1677450106805.jpeg

The Lugs-list only goes up to 8 though. Maybe VACO is number 9 ? (Merely a wild guess).

LIC-1: Stanley, Blue-Point
LIC-2: IRWIN, Apex
LIC-3:
LIC-4:
LIC-5:
LIC-6: Vlchek
LIC-7: BHM
LIC-8: Bonney

List taken from here--

I had a warning on Aug18 that four.cycle was plotting to add to my hoard, and despite my not registering on this thread, and despite the big friendly letters on the box stating that the contents was not Secret Santa, I held off (as directed by the same letters) from opening it until 4am EST today, just before catching a flight. Happy schemes for de-rusting this cute little Bonney Champion vise danced through my head all the way to Puerto Rico! (Better not fret: Santa had already cleared the east coast prior to takeoff.)
Thanks, Brian!

The past week, I took time to apply some attention to the old girl. Got the parts separated with some gentle perserverence

Then a toothbrush scrub with mineral spirits over the paint and two light coats of BLO. I think the surface of the mostly-there red paint is oxidized almost black. Maybe careful, light abrasion could brighten it more, but I’ll probably just leave as is.

I think it’s beautiful.

Here’s the combined result of some sporadic flea market luck and some recent, rabid eBaying at the moon.
4730E080-A2B9-458B-AEA8-0EB4FBA9119F.jpeg9CC7E74B-7378-49AF-9F09-E814381565BD.jpeg
TuHex TuType combos are presented on p24 of the 1934 catalog in six sizes, and p62 of the 1937 catalog in these seven sizes, along with set168 and set169, neither including all sizes.
The date codes on my examples appear to span P, R, S, (possibly) T, and Z. I plan to do more looking.
Also interesting, I have two examples of the 162, and they BOTH state Chrome Vanadium Steel, as specified in the 1934 catalog.
I think Twertsy once opined these could be Bonney’s first foray into combo wrenches. Their overall form is very similar to say, Billings. But Zenel combos also appear in the 1934 catalog. (I see neither earlier than that, though the Zenel description implies them to be ”widely used” already.) My hunch is, the decision to offer combos occurred around the same time as the intention to offer differing price points for different clients. Zenel is premium, and TuHex (not marked with Bonney, so presumably not guaranteed) is economy, with Bonaloy coming later to replace both.

A story from 2021 with continuation. Sorry for double post - I created a thread looking for advise how to clean up the pouch

... October 24, 2021
"Well, will give a small story first. I bought a lot of dirty and rusty tools (not added to a proper thread yet as I would like to make picture of cleaned up ones, otherwise you will suspect I am buying mostly junk). When I originally visited the sale on my way to work, I bought some tools with this Bonney set which was not complete. I arrived at work, decided to look at the set again (it was missing 2 wrenches) and vaguely remembered in the pile of old rusty tools in a different part of the garage a tiny wrench which was similar in shape, but very rusty and I did not even remember if it was a Bonney. Postpone many hours. On the way back from work my OCD kicked in - drove by the sale - people were closing it. Could not see it right away, but bought more tools (danger of having more time and not in a rush to get to work) As I bought more, they gave me even more rusty tools in a contained so they would not have to throw them away as nobody wanted them. Well, I got home, went through tons of rust, dirt and everything that was there and found not one, but both missing pieces!!! The one I remembered is on the left)"
Fast forward to March 1 2023...Bonney1.jpgBonney2.jpgBonneyLR28_1.jpgBonneyLR28_2.jpgBonneyLR28_3.jpg

Seeing that other real nice Bonney vise reminded me of this. I haven't stripped the paint but I do not see any markings. I'm almost certain that it is a Bonney no. 250 improved farmer's, or garage vise, depending on the year of the ad.

2-1/2" jaws, opens 3-1/2", weight 10 lbs complete with all swivel base pieces. I believe the knob on it is original. (Water bottle and 2.5" Miller's Falls clamp on vise for scale).

I have a few of them. Almost all of them have the same paint, original? The closest I see is hand water pump red but after laying out in the weather it's not bright.
Possibly you can scrape and massage the anvil. I like to think there is more then a name or number there.

I think you’re right with the identification. I hope you don’t mean to strip it - it looks original to me (but, your vise - your choice). I have two sizes of them (think I posted here some time). I stripped both of the with fine wire wheel (I hope I had cause to do it, but don’t remember). The larger has slight traces of similar red paint. The smaller has traces of green. Neither has identifying logos or model numbers I can recall. (So don’t strip it just to see!)
I don’t see any brand or model number on the anvil on either tonight. One does have a part number cast on the side of the meatball.
