I do plan on doing something. Once I get them hinged I will step back and scratch my head and come up with something. Two hours of head scratching for every 10 minutes of work .

Even better! Need something to do while smoking, might as well tend the steam engine over a few beers But steam power is oily and dirty and might contaminate the meat.

Jeeps1 - Let me preface this question with the fact that I know nothing about smokers. Is there an internal passage that allows the heated air from fire box to travel the length of the smoker before it goes out the stack?

Yes , it's considerd a reverse flow smoker. There's a 1/4 " baffle plate running the length of the smoke chamber for radiant heat . Then the smoke travels back across to the stack .

I do plan on motorizing the piston and governor.

Had some time to work on the smoker. Made a place to set my beer . A nice piece of 2 inch thick alder left over from another house project. Hope to make some progress over Christmas.

As a machinist and a BBQ enthusiast, I am blown away by this work of art.
2 questions:
Any idea on the weight?
Did you pie cut and re-weld for the bend in the angle iron for the beer holder, or are the marks inside from a stretcher?

As for the weight I can only guess very heavy . The speed governor alone is pushing 250 lbs . I did pie cut the 2 inch angle to get the six inch radius .

Did some work on the hinges and put the dam on the baffle plate . So the pig juice doesn't run back to the firebox .
My wife got me a tig welder for Christmas , my first attempt at tig welding . It looked so easy on the youtube videos I watched . I find it very satisfying even though I am not any good at it yet.
Also a side project I made for my grandson for his sandbox .

I would like to ask a general question. Could a whole pig be cooked in a smoker such as you built or would anything have to be different? Such as a rotisserie or more direct heat (fire)?
