I had no idea there were people who looked down their nose at printing with PLA. How pathetic.
Feels like an odd takeaway from these posts.I had no idea there were people who looked down their nose at printing with PLA. How pathetic.
Pla is great to start out with and I guess if you only make farcical stuff it’s ok but
I don't get the "dirt cheap" comments. Petg can easily be sourced for $10 a roll, same with pla. Maybe in the before times it was different, but it's not the case today@mike93lx, I can totally see where some people feel like they are being "looked down their noses at" for using PLA. Not saying other filaments don't have their place as well, but it seems like the equivalent of someone saying "Throw away all your SAE tools, because you never need them", only to find their entire worldview is a Toyota dealer auto mechanic.
Use what works. PLA is cheap, flows well, is stupid simple to print with and prototype, etc. If you need the benefits of other things, great, use those. But don't "gatekeep" the elitism of what plastic you use to determine if you are worthy enough.
Edit: This is coming from someone who started with Makerbots and Replicator/x3g code. So I have seen most of the evolution...
I haven't experienced the downsides. I've had far more failed prints with pla than Petg. Abnormal experience or is that perception a carry over from old printers?Sure PETG is also cheap, but PLA (deservedly) has the reputation of "just working" (regarding printer issues), along with being offered in more colors/flavors than PETG. So if you don't need the benefits of PETG, why deal with any downsides?
Again, I am not saying "Dont use PETG". But if PLA works for the need, why the elitism?
I agree, no shaming anyone from me. There is no amount less that I could care what everyone else runs through their printers. You are the outlier (both IME, and general internet wisdom), for having more PLA fail than PETG. This is experience from both Core XY and bedslingers, enclosed and open, anything from the level of Ender to Stratysys.
But even if your experience was indicative of the whole, why shame others for using what works for them? Not saying you (mike) in specific, but rather in general. Kind of like "SO or Bust", "HF is garbage" mentality.

Cheaper is fair. "dirt cheap" for $2-3 less? I see folks buying Petg for under $10 as well, but I just get it from school house spools as it's cheap enough and supports a small business.I pay $7-8 a roll for PLA. It's always a couple bucks cheaper than the cheapest PETG.
Why are people trying to be a victim some how, or claim I slighted them; and claim my statement was elitism? Seems to be a problem with society of people not reading or hearing what is actually said and making additional things up in thier mind.Sure PETG is also cheap, but PLA (deservedly) has the reputation of "just working" (regarding printer issues), along with being offered in more colors/flavors than PETG.
