I've seen some large equipment but I can't recall any (other than specialty machines) that had such a disproportionately large head stock compared to the length of the lathe. It looks larger than the max center to center distance.

Way back I was introduced to a Pacemaker that a local pattern shop has, it has been a bit of a quest machine for me since. It seems that most of the channels I frequent on youtube have a thing for Monarchs, but the Pacemaker does it for me. I have it's Grandpa, a 1927 ATW Heavy Duty 24", but being a cone head lathe, it is nothing like the Pacemaker.

I've only run one or two in 40 years of machining. It's a solid hunk-o-iron there. Congratulations, wish I had room for one.

Unloaded and set the machine in place this morning. Just wow. I am excited! And exhausted. Moving this machine was no joke. My 6000 pound mill was significantly easier.

I think I have what I need to do a trial run of the lathe on the phase converter. If it goes well, it will get installed properly. In the mean time, here’s a sped up video of unloading and setting the lathe in place.

Maybe I should have started a thread in the electric section but figured i'd try here first.

I'm trying to wire up my 2j 1.5hp bridgeport. I won this at an auction and never heard it run. I replaced the bushings, belts, and all the bearings in the top half.

I'm using this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F26M1TH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When i purchased it, it had 9, 5 star reviews and now there are 39 and they are not so good. My initial thought is that this converter is the problem but want to rule out anything i did first.

The converter has the standard 2 leads in and 3 leads out. The 3 lead ouput is labled U, V, W. From the drum i wired the T1 to U, the T2 to the V, and the T3 to the W. When i turned it on, it ran in the correct direction but was spinning very slow, maybe 50 rpm and i could stop it by hand. The motor was not making any weird noises/humming, the brake on the mill was not set, spindle moved freely by hand but it was just spinning very slowly. I double checked the wiring from the drum to the motor and it was correct. Drum switch worked with fwd and rev. I ended up trying wiring it in different ways just to see if anything would change but only succeeded in making it spin in reverse.

I checked the output on the converter and with no load it showed 124 volts on all three legs to ground. With the motor on it showed 124 volts on two legs and 168 on the other. After this I checked the resistance on the motor and got 11.7 on all three windings.

I'm new to 3 phase stuff so not sure what else to try so any suggestions before i send this back would be appreciated. I've been beutifying and rebuilding this thing for a few months and just want this project complete. I tried the manufacturer but their suggestion was basically to keep trying different wires to different terminals on the output.

I have the same 1.5HP Bridgeport that I put a Lenze/AC Tech vfd on, which is the ideal way to run your machine. The 2nd best is a rotary phase converter. The 3rd best is a static phase converter. I'm not positive, but I think what you have is more or less a digital static phase converter?

I have the static phase converter that came on my machine that another member committed to buy, but I never heard from again. I'm in Phoenix and would sell it a lot cheaper than the unit you purchased. The gunsmith I bought my machine from said it worked great for his needs. The downside to one of these is you lose about 1/3 of your power and you can't be doing constant starts/stops. I'm definitely no expert, so do some research, or maybe someone more qualified can chime in.

1hp would probably still be fine but I don't have any plans to make it down to the valley anytime soon, appreciate it though. I might just go the VFD route but worried about another chinese product and I don't think i want to spend the type of money you did on a quality one until i know this mill is in good working condition.

Here is the email from the manufacturer
"if your motor is not running well or the motor is reversing, you should turn off the power immediately and you have to switch the wires on output(U, V, W) of our phase converter. Actually, when you connect the wires from the output of the phase converter to your motor, you could succeed in the first time, or second time, or third time."

Really gives me confidence in their product.

Got this little gem today. I think my lathe collection is complete. Put it in turbo to get there for the $2350 asking price.

FWIW...I hustle my *** off.

We simply don't see the quantity or quality of machinery here in Phoenix that you're picking up. It took me a while to find a clean Bridgeport. In the mean time, my buddies in SoCal get clean ones for half the price all day long.

Maybe I need to start transporting to AZ lol.

What does your lathe collection consist of?

This and a Monarch 10EE. If I had more space, I’d have all kinds of stupid stuff.

You have been on a roll! Nice score! So when are you going to add another Fadal to the shop? [emoji51]

...

I have a cheap no-name VFD off of ebay for about that price that I used on my 10ee until I bought the FujiElectric model. I never had any issues with it, but it was never going to be the one that ended up there. If you are running a regular VFD it on single phase, you need to derate it. With no load, that's not the problem of course. I want to assume that since they list it as single phase in, the ratings are for that. At that price point, I wouldn't bet on it, though. Is the motor on the mill the original motor with the original wiring? If you have voltage at the leads going into the motor and it's not spinning up, I would suspect a bad motor. If it's a hi/low voltage motor, though, it could be wired for 440 and you would get what you are seeing. I think more info is needed, unless this is already fixed and I just missed it.

I don't see anywhere it states so, and the mention of it being able to drive a mag starter makes me think it's not an issue, but most inverter mfrs state that the load should not be connected or disconnected while power is applied. I don't know what's going on inside this device, but I would think it is just a inverter without the variable freq.l

I left the lathe powered up from the temporary setup while I wait for supplies to install it all. Enough tooling arrived to take a cut on some 7/8 4140 I had on hand. I also have a 7/8 2J collet. The rigidity and amount of raw power this lathe has can not be understated. This is my first chips on the lathe:
