The boxes with griplatch feature are comparable to Snap-on's Heritage KRA series and BluePoint boxes. For a while they were built together in the same plant as Snap-on in Newmarket, no idea where they're made now.

I have the 40" blue/black Euro Style top and bottom, build quality is very good. I was tempted to buy the 72"x30" box they had but 30" is a little too deep for me to reach the back of the drawer.

Quality Craft makes the Mastercraft Maximum tool boxes, they also make the Montezuma boxes.

HF 44" is still better quality than both the MC and MM boxes I had a MM and gave it to my BIL got the hf 44 like 3 years ago will be heading across the boarder to get another this summer. The current MM boxes are significantly better quality than the MC boxes of the late 90's though.

I know its more money, but for $80 more, you can get the 400 piece Mastercraft Maximum socket set,reg $700 for $180 (highlighted in the flyer above)
Much better deal/bang for your buck. Both offer lifetime warranty, but with the Mastercraft product (Canadian Tires tool brand) if for what ever reason you need to warranty a tool, you simply walk in to any Canadian Tire and they give you a replacement right there, where you'll have to send the Stanley tool away if you need to warranty it.
Just my 2cents.

I ended up buying a Mastercraft Maximum Set, I think it was the 172 piece set for around $129.00 IIRC, and it was in the plastic moulded light grey case which is what I wanted, I'll post a picture of it later.
Looks like the latches on the box could be an issue if not treated with care as they are not very robust but I didn't like the Stanley ones much either.

The layout of the 164 piece Stanley set defied logic and it tries to cover too much by offering 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" but doesn't cover a very good range with either size. It also didn't include an extension for the 1/2" drive, also the sockets were really difficult to remove from the case, needed a screw driver to pry some of them out.

I actually got one of the employees to open up a few of the Stanley sets and the MC/Maximum sets so I could compare them and to test the quality of the ratchets.
I liked the MC/Maximum brand a little better even though they look like they may have come from the same factory, just felt they have a little better finish and the sockets are easy to remove from their indents.

I considered the set you posted above and have the older version of that set in my home workshop which I really like, but we don't have a suitable tool chest to store them in at the shop, so they would be messed up in no time unless I purchased a tool box for them.

If it's the case I think it is, it's latches are replaceable through Western Case. They were very easy to work with getting new latches for my Snap On scanner case.

Thanks, I'll post that info away in my memory bank in case (pun intended) I need new latches at some point in the future.

Here are the pictures of the kit I bought.

My OCD has trouble with the alignment of the numbers etched on the sockets, can't they at least have them all lined up. Just like they are in the photo on the nice cardboard wrapper.

Ok, nope .. that's not the latches I'm thinking of. Might still be theirs tho.

Um .. you did see that those are the 'universal' type? Have you tried those before?

Yes, I have a set of MC/MX metric wrenches that have the "universal" box end and they seem to be OK for general wrenching, most of the sockets are 6 point in that set, it's just the ones in the top case on the lower row that are the universal type.

Edit, just checked they are all "universal" didn't notice that before. opps.

I've only seen them recently in sets but don't know much about them as all my other sockets and tools are either 6 point or 12 point.

Are they an issue?

All the MM stuff is going to be dirt cheap this year as they clear it out for the rebranding of the new Maximum line. Unfortunately that means for me that I will have to behave myself when it comes to the C-Tire flyers as I need to pay for school still.

I ended up with the 86 piece tap and die set I think last week when it went on sale, MC scissors set and drywall saw the next day when I returned the 46pc that I had previously bought for the same price as the 86pc only weeks beforehand. I think it was something like 55% off.

I bought the 14 piece Mastercraft combination wrench set today (latest flyer) and took it back this evening for a refund. I guess the price was too good to be true. The quality was horrible.

The box end opening on the 13mm was so off center it was laughable. It was paper thin on one side and super thick on the opposite side of the ring. A number of the wrenches were bowed along the thin axis as well. Chrome finish looked decent enough. Hopefully the Maximums will go on sale, although I didn't see any sets on the shelves.

1.I have both the metric and standard Mastercraft Maximum solid combination wrench sets as well as all the larger sizes you have to buy separately, all the box ends are punched on centre and no bows in the wrenchs. You probably got a bad set, should have looked for another set/tried a different store.

2.There is currently no Mastercraft 'Maximum' solid combination wrenchs as of right now, just reg 'Mastercraft'.They are made to the same specifications as the previous Mastercraft 'Maximum' solid combination wrenchs.

3.No,the Mastercraft 'Maximum' name is NOT being phased out,but Mastercraft just decided to make the solid combination wrenchs just reg 'Mastercraft' as of right now.

What is Canadian Tire rebranding them as?

They are not.It is still going to be 'Mastercraft Maximum' they are just really promoting the 'Maximum' in the name and slightly changing the font design/style as well as the color.

They did the same thing with the reg 'Mastercraft' just over a year ago (changed the font design/style as well as the color).

If buying the MC screwdrivers, skip out on the Maximum ones as they have done nothing but break / chip (S2 steel,um, no)

The regular multipack of screwdrivers, though less shiny looking, seem to be made of better metals and seem to be more durable.

I am a DIY guy, but I feel much better using my Mastercraft sockets on an actual ratchet (picked a 72 1/4 Snappy and a FL80 3/8)

I do have some old Mastercraft ratchets that seem better functioning than current models.

Thinking of biting on the 1/2 torque wrench for $70. Does it ever come on for lower than 50% off anyone know?

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-maximum-1-2-in-drive-torque-wrench-0588562p.html#.VRh2UlzA3DM

For a lot less, consider the princess auto model
http://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/1-2-in-dr-click-type-torque-wrench/A-p2919389e

Very possibly the identical unit to what Tekton sells

To be honest I'm not the biggest powerfist fan. I like the propoint stuff though!

Anyway, that torque wrench only goes to 150 ft/pounds the mastercraft one goes to 250ft/pounds.

agreed. powerfist is ****

On that link, Tekton has two versions of the 1/2" drive torque wrench - a 10-150ftlb and a 25-250ftlb. PA also sells a 25-250 wrench but it's not the same as the Tekton.

Picked up the torque wrench with bonus breaker bar for $63 including tax. Pretty happy considering I was going to but the torque wrench on the last sale for more money with no breaker bar[emoji3]

Nice,awesome buy.

I'm surprised no one on here got one of the MC MX tool boxes,or atleast if they did, they didn't post it.But seeing how its a substantial purchase, they would more then likely post it.

Thanks! I just find the mastercraft boxes too shallow. Although I would be using it it a professional environment. Would be perfect for a diy guy. When I upgrade my box from the Costco one I have it'll come home with me

This is true and is my only gripe if I were to have one.
Prior to buying my MC MX box,I looked at the similar size Husky box, similar size Craftsman box, similar size International box etc.For the price vs quality vs size vs warranty vs looks,I (personally) deemed the MC MX the better box and got it.

Completely! Don't get me wrong, for the price, they're great, well built boxes. I just need something deeper than the one I have which is the same depth as the mastercraft ones. Will be picking up a Montezuma box from peavey mart eventually. 72" wide X 30" deep!
