I have the hardhat light also.. mine is mounted to a hardhat. Yes, it's completely possible to wear it on your head, but it's not made to be comfortable that way on bare skin.. if you notice, some of these guys are wearing it over something, so take that into account. I don't have the headlamp, but I have others from Coast that are a lot smaller and more comfortable to wear. It'll all depend on what you find "tolerable". For me, personally, I think I'd get the headlamp if I wanted to wear it like that, but I wouldn't be buying batteries myself if it was for work. The hardhat light is much bigger, and has a rubber backing so it doesn't slip on plastic.. the only thing you're really giving up with the headlamp is the rechargeable battery. The hardhat light looks to be DESIGNED (obviously) to accept the larger battery, so it's kinda bigger than it would need to be using smaller batteries.. if your gonna use it ALOT then try it. It's better than burning though batteries all the time if you need to buy them yourself.
One thing you COULD try, is pick up the hardhat light and see if it's usable for you.. if not, you could always buy a $6 magnetic, and screw it onto the headpiece and make a mountable, adjustable magnetic work light. Then maybe try the headlamp..
Depends if you have the dollars to risk on trying. I can't promise you that you'll like wearing it on your bare head for hours. I didn't get the impression I'd enjoy it, but I'm sure it's something you can get use to if that's what you wanna do. The headlamp I'd be pretty confident in saying (without even owning it) you wouldn't mind wearing.
It's also possible to pick up some rechargeable batteries for the headlamp model.. or if that doesn't work for you, there is always other brands available. I know, Milwaukee kinda created a little bit of a void with the different designs. Everybody always wants the best of different models but sometimes it just doesn't work out like that.
