I was unable to resist this Walden 1/2” drive ratchet. It arrived today from an eBay seller.

I don’t even have any 1/2” drive Walden to go with it. I just liked it. The price with shipping wasn’t bad either. Roy, you had quite a ratchet haul. What was up with that top one?

Not sure on many of the details of this one. If I had to guess it would 20s-30s it has 2 mechanicisms one for direction and other to rotate the head maybe? The price was right and couldn't pass on a ratchet I don't have for a buck.IMG_20190629_122820162.jpegIMG_20190629_122828624.jpegIMG_20190629_122836645_HDR.jpeg

Looks like a bog 812 Ford connecting rod tool. From mid 1920's. Listed on alloy artifacts website.
Ahh. The handle did appear to have the same design as the sold Walden, Ray, and Blackhawk tool kits. Thanks for the info.

I picked up this unmarked 3/8dr rat today. It’s a Plomb/Proto/Penens WF, right?
As found, the selector switch (and internal toggle) was flipped around so the selector was in no danger of being torn off or reversed accidentally, which was cool, but in the middle position could freewheel. That seemed particularly useless and a bit dangerous, so when I cleaned the dried crud out and greased it, I flipped it to the normal position. Now it locks the drive in the middle position, which I suppose is the right way for it to operate.

I have just started collecting ratchets and tools for a little over a year. Being a rookie my humble collection isn't much compared to you veterans. Interesting that the Beall ratchet was manufactured about five miles from my house. The three ratchets to the far right in the third and fourth pic are not marked if anybody recognizes them. Thanks Bob k.

Nice ratchet collection. Looks like maybe a walden, a plomb and maybe some duro derivative.

Well Lugz thanks for the info on the speedee-ratchet and glad to be on the exclusive club. One of the post refer to Mark that lives in Alton IL. I'm sure its the same Mark that I picked up the nice Will B. Lane ratchet. Great guy with a lot of knowledge on ratchets and tools.

Nice set Bob. I am up in the 700s and I don't have several of those on the first pic.

Next time you see him, show him my WANTED! DEAD OR ALIVE! post (#647, page 33 on this thread), linked here, and let me know if he has ever seen one of those ratchets. They were in a Bethlehem Spark Plug Company set. Note that some kind of blade or similar tool, perhaps to help seat or un-seat sockets, folds out from the handle hinged at the end like a knife.

Well thanks for the encouragement r olson. Being new at this its easy to tell if its old but hard to know if its worth the price to buy or not. Luckely at auctions/fleemarkets ive gone to nobody has been interested in the older stuff. And Lugz I will show Mark the post and see if he has or seen the wanted items you show. Here is one more I forgot to post. Is this one of the first swivel head ratchets made ?

Maybe. I think there was a Bay State or something similar to that name that maybe close to that date.

Mark? Mathis? He's a good guy and his knowledge goes WELL beyond tools. I'll speak with him this afternoon as a matter of fact. Have him show you his Snappy kit from the very early days.....

Stopped at an antiques emporium this afternoon, and spotted a 3” across-flats single open-ended wrench, a monstrous torque wrench, and this huge ratchet, which I think was 2” square drive and about 3’ long. Babcock-Davis Easy Access Flagpole...
Didn’t get a price, but judging from everything that was priced, too high for me.

Further GJ reading here if you're interested.

I forgot I wrote that post lol..Think I still have that ratchet in one of my desk drawers.

Lesserson: that thing is massive!! I bet the asking price was silly. Problem with something like that is it’s almost as rare as someone that actually needs one.

Won a couple of lots at an auction which came with a surprise cache of oversized hand tools inside a work bench. Among the tools was this Williams X-51 "The Superratchet". 25" long and sized at 1". Also included a 26" long, 1" size, Williams breaker bar.

Wow, I guess you wont need a breaker bar with that.

Anyone hear of Allen USA?

Gotta get rid of the cheap ones.

Basically a Full polish craftsman, I think a RP craftsman guts fit as well. The selector switch is different though obviously.

I found a couple interesting ratchets at a Tahoe garage sale this morning. The 1/2” drive ratchet is an early Walden non-reversing female ratchet that came with a Williams plug. The other ratchet is a nice working 3/8” drive Williams Superratchet.

Nice on the Walden. They must have had alot of early ratchet varities as it seems new designs pop up all the time.

Here is a unique on I couldnt pass up. An early OTC roto. As if the roto wasn't adaptable enough someone welded a breaker bar end to the opposite side.IMG_20190726_203122588.jpeg

That one can go in the drawer of oddly modified tools. Sometimes I wonder what the people were thinking with some tool modifications. At least yours is still perfectly functional.

I had a brain fart and accidentally flipped the selector all the way over when I had my Mac M1R apart for cleaning. The teeth on the pawl would catch the ball bearing and not allow it to flip back over.

The selector is peened on, so I thought I was gonna have to just cut it off. Til I realized the little plate holding pawl and selector captive is a press fit into the ratchet body. I put the ratchet in a vise and tapped on the selector, and it shot out with spring and bearing.

That ribbon of steel between the 2 bores on selector side Has to be .015"...you can see the plate which is captive on pawl by peened on selector.

Cleaned, greased, back together. Had to tap it in with brass hammer. Needs used

Was thinking the same thing. Who did the weld job did very well. Thought about cutting it off and fixing it but I am going to keep it as is.
I am surprised no one made one like that before. Seems kinda handy.
It does seem kinda odd no one made one like this. Kind of reminda of an old Mac double headed breaker bar I have. I will have to dig it out and take some pictures.

Picked this up at the flea. I normally don't go for Cman rats but this one is in very nice shape. It has been used lightly, but someone stored it well. Mechanism is crisp. Edit: 1/2 drive

Long C ratchet, BE makers mark. It was gummed up inside, so I took apart, cleaned in spirits and loosely re-assembled for now. Works well.
