Just to add to DOlsen's and Roy's input, note that they were part of a much larger set that came in a finger-joint oaken box. If you're not interested in keeping them, you might be able to find homes for a few of the sockets or the screwdriver bit with collectors who have the boxed set but are missing a few of the pieces, and make a little pocket cash for yourself. As far as these boxed sets go in general in that era, the B&S sets are not as common as some of the other mfgr's socket sets, and they carry a nice value in complete condition for that reason. So it might be worth your while cleaning them up and listing them on a service (Classifieds here, CL, etc) or eBay. There are collectors who would buy the lot just to get the one or two sockets they may need.

These sockets and ratchet were available in four different sets. They were numbered 50, 51, 52, and 53, from the smallest to the largest. The attachments are from catalog No 35, ca. 1923.

If anyone is interested, I have several complete sets available, as well as lots of individual pieces.

Thanks Guys... cool site here.

I will gladly put them ALL in a flat rate box to anybody who wants them for $30 plus the flat rate box which should be 7.90. I almost used them for tilefish sinkers (I used any old iron I can find esp railroad bolts and rebar.... I don't know how to clean the ratchet or take care of the sockets but they are cool looking 443-945-6049 to anybody who wants them and I am in Cecil County Md

I picked this up a few weeks ago, $1. I assume is a Craftsman, but with the logos wore off / ground off. It was very difficult to rotate the head, but after opening it up and removing all the peanut butter (!!) it works smoothly again.

Made by Plomb for Sears Craftsman, 44-48ish. Nice rat and the price was right.

Couple, three Plomb 1/4 ratchets. I love the tear drop design with the long selector switches.

Craftsman: that picture could be a screensaver for a lot of us. I love the ratchets, but that old Plvmb box is a heckuva display piece.

how long did it take you to find all that?

Thanks Drives. Many of the ratchets and box were purchased from a couple in Oregon that bought out a guys extensive collection of Plomb tools.

I know this isn't a ratchet, but the box once contained some manner of drive tool, so I'm stretching the intention of this thread.

Cornwell 1/2" drive socket set box.

This was given to me by a buddy, who had used it for a mixed set (containing mostly diamond era SK tools) for the past 25+ years. I have a handful of Cornwell tools (mostly old sockets) but have never actively collected them. I know nothing about this box, the era, or intended contents.

I searched for a Cornwell thread in the vintage forums, but to no avail. Someone with more knowledge and more tools to show than I, should start a vintage Cornwell thread!

I found two ratchets at a flea market this morning. I don't know how vintage they are.

Requesting help to identify this very old ratchet. Only marking I can see is 5Z1155. A few questions.....were early ratchets typically uni-directional? Also it seems like the 1/4" square "socket" is really part of the tool, and presumably a 1/2" drive stud/plug fits into there and then into a mating socket. Is this the case? Thanks as always for the education.

I would look towards the direction of a catapillar specialty tool. The part number seems to align with catapillar tool part numbers. Most ratchets (depending on manufacturers) before mid 30s were a push plug design. You had to push the drive stud through the ratchet to flip the direction. I know Blackhawk was one of the early adoptera if the selector switch design with their X911 ratchet.
Hope this helps.

It wonder if it may be a Ford part number. The construction doesn’t exactly look like this MTF made wrench, but the number is quite similar.

I'm thinking Ford as well. I have a couple of old "Z"# Ford one direction affixed socket ratchets as if they were made for assembling only, or some other one job type use.

I was going to put together a group of my Proto ratchets for a photo, and when I dug out my 3/4" drive unit, I discovered it wasn't a Proto! I guess I was fooled by the similar selector system, but once I paid attention, the head is smaller and sleeker. The selector lever has a visible detent, too.

It is a Walden 5184. I'm surprised that it doesn't say Stevens on it anywhere.

If anyone can steer me to an appropriate Walden thread, I'll post this ratchet there. It seems too new for the Old Walden thread.

I spotted two Will.B.Lane hex head ratchets today. One is unique, but the other is super unique!
A quick search of this thread shows a short conversation about the “wanted dead or alive” ratchet, but I didn’t see these.
They appeared to have solid forged handles and no hidden tools, but I may have missed something - I didn’t take a picture of the handle on end. (Edit - now I did. The pic is out-of-focus, but the **** really is featureless anyway.)
If these are of super or just unique interest to anyone, they were marked $12 and $14.
I think it’s interesting that the patent date is for Bartholomay’s ratcheting screwdriver patent, but the address is Chicago, which DATAMP suggests indicates after 1914. Lane held two ratchet patents from between 1908 and 1914, so why aren’t they indicated on the handle instead if this earlier one?

* they say when it rains it pours.... *

That is the second "Super Unique" to make an appearance in the last week. Prior to a week ago I'd never seen one, other than a listing in an old hardware catalog.
See HERE: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=380158

There's a "Super Unique" "Style G" Lane set for sale right now on Ebay, with one bid of $99.99 as I type this.

Woody was looking for some information on Bartholomay.

Lane Super Unique Style G 17-pc SAE socket set - 1923 Baker Hamilton & Pacific Co. catalog pp 19.jpg Lane Super Unique Style G 17-pc SAE socket set (Ebay 402019960762 01).jpg

Until you posted those photos above, I had no idea there was such a significant difference in size between the "Unique" and "Super Unique" ratchet.
You would be doing us a favor by posting those images in that other "Lane" thread. ;)

Jock,
I think it qualifies as being pretty old. Here it is in the 1948 Walden catalog.

I just posted this in the Powr Kraft thread, but I thought I'd share it here too.

Ward's Powr Kraft 84w4758 1/4" drive ratchet. I grabbed it because it has a selector I've never seen before.

Those are sweet ratchets. I think they have a bullet handle as well.

Morning, Folks....kwik tourist question for y'all. Anyone able to shed any light on who made this olde gal? Can't find anything like it, anywhere. 1-1/16" opening, 22" long, 1" diameter round handle w/zero knurling or texture. Weighs at least 5 lbs. Only markings are several '4's....and then looks like the number 69 stamped below either a K or an R, then either a T or an F. Hmmmm. But any help would be most appreciated....

Thanks in advance,

Rick

I have not seen one like that before. The head shape looks old wright series but I don't think that is it. Has the handle been cut shorter? Odd to see no knurling.
