I heard from Rian just now, they are supposed to work your way today and perhaps mine before/after depending on timing. If mine after maybe you follow and we take the hearse for a spin. :)

just catching up:
1. Sorry for your loss. It may have been expected, but that only makes it a hair [less hard]. If there was anything the internet could say to make it better...
2. Get a barn cat. Try to make sure it spends most of its time in the shop between dusk and dawn. If this doesn't work, get two. Cats and humans are tied into this weird pet/owner relationship because of their benefits to human health and sanitation, not because they're too social.
3. Clear up the nasty old grain. (You're not lazy, you just like some types of work more than others).

kjdhawkhill,
Thanks for tagging along and for the comment. As you said it made it slightly easier, but still not a tear free event. It may sound harsh but I'm just not a cat person, maybe too many bad experiences in the past that make me feel that way but I doubt I'll get one intentionally. When it cools down a touch the grain is on my to do list, I will certainly be using a respirator and goggles, it is some nasty stuff in there.

All,

I had a nice visit from a couple of fellow GJ'ers Saturday morning, Rain and Craig stopped by on their US tour which I was honored to be a part of the trip. I was happy to entertain them and enjoy a few laughs and stories. We spent a good bit of time talking about Herb's Hearse (Ready to test/pick up when you are Herb.) and the subtle differences in late 40's GM's, stories from the road and life in general. Sadly I didn't get a photo of them on my phone so I'll have to beg one of them to share. We did exchange a few things and here is one that I did get a photo of:
attachment.php

Yep, that is right, I am now officially a billionaire, I never thought it would happen but here I am just your local GJ billionaire as humble as ever.

I spent the rest of the weekend mowing, trimming, and cleaning in general. I did get the white Jeep TJ sold for slightly less than we paid but I kept the winch and bumper so I'm not too sad about it. What am I saying, what do I care, I'm a billionaire now it is just a drop in the bucket.

I also loaded the "free" Yellow car onto the trailer to take in to the scrap yard, I have pulled everything of value out of it to me so off it goes.

JB, as you know Rian and Craig didn't make it here to late then they were off to find a motel. I was hoping they had more time to yak it up. It was more of a hit and run. Of course it was good to see Rian and his friend.
So me coming down and go for a burn in the hearse with them didn't pan out.
Anyway I plan on Sunday morning to come down and load your barn guest up and bring it back to civilization ur Kansas:lol_hitti. So if this sounds like a go for you , then its a planned deal. Thanks for your help on the hearse, and maybe I can take it to the Last Run car show in Ark City, Kansas. I think its in a couple of weeks. I'll give you a call in a few days.

Brotha can I hold a dolla???

And it begins, you become suddenly rich with billions to your name and people come calling with a hand out. :spit: I guess I could spare a few million, does anyone know where the closest bank is that will take Zimbabwe money, I'm about to make it rain. :pimpflash

Herb,
That is what it seemed like, they were happy to stay and chat but had many many things on their list. Understandable for what all they wanted to see and do though, I'm just thankful I made the short list and they thought to pay me a visit.

We will see about Sunday, give me a call anytime this week and we can discuss a bit more.

Hey JB
I just got the Nov. Hot Rod magazine the "Power Tour" issue. I could not find a single picture or your car. What a disapointment. :bounce:
Glad to hear that the UK boys made it by your place. They are yearly USA roadtrippers.
Sort of a power tour of their own.

I agree, I was sad they didn't get a single one of me in the pouring rain, there were a few of them. :( There is always next year I guess, eventually if I do enough long hauls they have to right? :bounce:

They certainly do put on the miles and don't let grass grow under their feet while they are on our side of the pond.

I'm still moving along on some stuff slowly but surely. This past weekend I was picking up some donuts for the girls when I noticed my rear brakes sounded like they were about grind off. Put it on the lift to have a look and this is what I found:
attachment.php

Yep they are beyond their useful life. :( I also noticed the boot for the piston on the caliper was in need of replacement. I couldn't get the parts locally so an order was placed. They arrived yesterday and it is now back together ready for more miles.

Also this weekend while mowing I suddenly stopped mowing. It turned out to be a broken tension spring on the drive belt, for the 2nd time now. :headscrat I ordered a new one and installed it this morning as well as change the blades out for a sharpened set. I'll be ready to go when this weekend comes around.

Thank you for the invitation hospitality and shop tour JB.

Both of us were very impressed with all you have done, and your engineering skills and results.

No wonder you and Andy get on so well.

Have pasted the entry below for continuity

So after Craig’s blood letting ceremony at just before daybreak, we headed out to JB’s place about 25 minutes from the motel.

After all, he had invited us to be there from 04.00 onward.

The heat and humidity throughout the trip had been high, mostly around 36’C and crazy humidity, so air on nonstop, and we had a large YETI Coolbox locked into the rear bed of the Dually as they are not cheap at all, Google the Yeti boxes to get an idea.

One of our daily rituals was to “steal” ice from our Hotel or motel or buy ice at the first gas station we saw, in order to keep a cooler full of drinks at hand.

Ritual: Drain plug out, train melted ice, top up dink’s and ice.

In this case........

Take note the size of the forecourt Ice maker and dispenser.

Larger than a UK single garage.

You can buy ice at $2.00 per bag, or buy in bulk,at half the price..... distributed directly from a chute, into the box.

We selected the cheaper option, way more than needed.

Also got breakfast, these were gross !!

Just sweet covered in chocolate like stuff.

And coffee, which was better.

Then on to the small village of Braman near which JB lived.

We messaged JB when we got to town, may even have surprised him with being earlier than expected, BUT.....

He was back in town to get some fresh donuts for his girls, so we were greeted by his dogs, always a happy place for me.

Once he made it back, we were straight into his shop.

His shop thread.:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=261352

This was a great spot for Craig as JB has been working on getting Herb “BugThugs” Chevrolet Hears fully road worthy.

Herbs thread: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=224688

It’s a biiiiig car.

Herb had also given me a plate for Clem in Fayetteville the night before.

And a very cool plate for my collection.

Some other interesting things were the toys JB keeps.....

For his daughters, these fascinated Craignas he has. 7 year old girl too.

JB has a hot, full size Cobra too.

Found in a ditch. Taken for Dennis.

One more thing was that the Dually had suddenly started showing tyre pressure warnings, all six were different and two were at 50psi in stead of recommend 75psi.

So JB pulled out his 50 Meyer hose from the shop.

Job done.

We also got shown his 2000 model S10 with 6.0 litre V8 conversion that looks totally factory.

After this we left as it was already getting hot and he had a 4 hr lawn mowing session ahead on his ride on mower.

These beautiful big yards have their own problems...... like massive lawns.

Once done at JB’s we headed further down into Oklahoma toward Ada.

I had been there before and we were headed to see Paul, and Brandon of the Chickasaw Nation whom I had met 5 years ago.

We also stopped at a yard sale, and I managed to pick up a sip up cool bag for 25 cents that worked for keeping our chocolate etc cool inside the truck, which turned into an oven every time we parked up.

After this we filled the Dually, spoke to some strangers from Denver Colorado and got invited to visit them too.

Craig freaked out at these delicacies

As well as filling up, we bought ourselves a hot breakfast.....

Good coffee, Fried Catfish for me, and to share some fried Mozzarella cheese sticks and deep fried pickles for Craig.

Sounds good??

You should have tasted them.

Then a long drive.......

Rian, you've got that right! My daughter gave me a Yeti stainless tumbler for a present a few years ago and I keep it locked up. Leaving it in the PT Cruiser is just asking for someone to break a window.

Any rotor damage or did you get them in time.

Caught in time I believe, I drove it to work this morning after the repair with no ill effects.

Great summary there guys, very nice to meet the both of you and thank you for coming for a visit once again. I have a couple of the small cups but the Yeti coolers are more than a few extra bags of ice. Glad ya'll enjoyed the trip!

I know the feeling, the two Yeti cups I have were free so I just leave the doors unlocked so if they take the cup at least they don't break a window too.

Day late and a dollar short, I am around the STL area from time to time, if I have some spare time I'll give you a shout.

All, I had a very long weekend but accomplished very little garage related sadly. I took my girls and one of my nieces back to the college where my mother works to watch the play Beauty and the Beast. They were very excited to meet Bell:
attachment.php

They didn't want a photo with Gaston so I had to fill in:
attachment.php

A little aside, I started my college carrier here and got my associates from them, I have two brothers that did as well as my father and late grandmother. I was surprised at how much it had changed since I'd graduated but that was 13 years ago now.

Well after a total of 17 hours on the road we made it back home, my plan was to mow before relaxing for a couple of hours...that didn't happen. As I pulled it I noticed there was a lot of water in the driveway. :headscrat Turns out the line from the pump to the house cracked somewhere. Turned it off, mowed, then started digging:
attachment.php

After chasing it for a while and digging down to ~3' I found the crack but sadly didn't have what I needed to fix it so left it off for the night and will finish it when I get home today.

Never bored,
JB

Great idea.

An owl.....

Looking at Uncle Bobs barn, there was a car under his owls nest.

Pretty sure it won’t be rescued anymore

This now has me thinking, can you train an owl or even a hawk to only poo outside? Training a hawk if falconry, what is training an owl called?

Well after a few failed attempts at repairs and the closest hardware store 30 minutes away I think I have it solved. There are some really strange water pipe runs in this yard that eventually I'll need to fix by replacing them all that day is not today. What I ended up doing was simply cutting the line and installing a fitting and cap.
attachment.php

The two hydrants on the property still work fine so not really sure what this used to go to. Also of note the line was buried just shy of 3' deep.

In the process of fixing that I knew I'd have to change the water filter which the previous owner installed. The way the valving works I get soaked by all of the water from the house drain into the filter as I'm taking it off. Not now, I drilled and tapped a hole to install a 1/2" ****** and ball valve as a drain.
attachment.php

They were left over from a scrap yard run, the other fitting was from a change I made on the air system in the shop, and the hose was left over from parting out a truck. So it was essentially a free upgrade except I didn't have a 1/2" NPT tap, didn't being the key word, I now do have one. Works like a champ too.

JB, the 1/2" NPT tap and die in my HF three-tap/die set are the most frequently used in my collection. Most of the sprinkler fittings are 1/2" so it lets me fix a stripped fitting in the ground without having to dig a big pit. Of course my plumbing is buried below the South Florida frost line at around 6-inches.

The "google" says that owls can be trained in Falconry. I'm looking forward to your posts on training the new addition to your shop.:)

Below the frost line for you should only require it to be below the ground. :) I just looked it up and depending on which map you believe our frost line here is 15"-36". I don't plan to replace them all today so I'll leave it as is at around 32-33". The HF tap and die set was pretty good for the money, and of course the free tape measure wasn't a bad addition either.

I've heard the females are easier to train and work better in pairs. I'd then be able to go play with a pair of hooter girls :pimpflash, we could even make t-shirts and sell them on the side...nah, that would never catch on. :lol_hitti

Hey JB - Just came upon your build thread again. Man its been awhile - I think last time I checked it you where tearing apart the Duramax twins.

Now your doing LS swaps - the 57 and the S10. Which one is the turbo going on?

I'm pretty sure I saw Cobra at Zmax on the first day of the Power Tour. You where in my back yard.

I thought I shot some video of it - but doesn't look like it made my video:

Anyways - keep up the good work! I look forward to the 57 and the S10 being done!

That hasn't been that long ago...well now that I look at the photos it was just over 2 years ago now, time does fly doesn't it. The turbo will go on the S10, I have two little maintenance items to do on a couple other vehicles of my own then onto the install. Well hopefully, I'm looking at something else that may delay it a bit. :( The '57 would sure be nice with a couple of small turbos, you know just for kicks, but that thing needs a lot of work to get to that point.

I was there, I wasn't at my car very often but it was a fun time. I'll check out the video in a bit, I've heard someone out there has video of me in the rain but don't know where to find it.

The S10 is a blast to drive as it, I'm really looking forward to more power in it though. I think the Cobra might get (and desperately needs) some attention before too much gets done on the '57.

Check out using nitrogen for finding your Freon leaks. I use it 100’s of times a year at work.

I read the entire thread over 3 days. The Quonset hooked me. My old shop was similar.

06LBZ, Could you explain the process of using nitrogen to me for finding the leak? Also welcome aboard, crazy someone would be bored enough to read my thread. :bounce:

I see you are from Richmond, Mo. I have a few family members around Lexington still, but don't get up there as often as I like. Beautiful country though especially when the leaves start turning.

For whatever reason I was much more tired this weekend than normal even sleeping in until 5 or 5:30 both days, then taking a couple hour nap as well. I hope I'm not getting sick. :headscrat

Well the weather and work both failed to cooperate, it was supposed to start raining at noon on Saturday so at first light I started to mow. When it was time to move the Green Dragon I had a little too much fun sliding it around on the wet grass:
attachment.php

Sunday was about getting a few small jobs around the house done I never could remember to complete, the only one photo worthy was to add bed rails to the top bunk in Cat's room:
attachment.php

I cleaned out the house garage in prep for working the lights over in there only to pick up something sharp without gloves. I bled like a stuck pig, the cut was only .25" long:
attachment.php

Organized a few things and that is about it, pretty low key weekend with only small accomplishments really.

JB

I have a bottle of Nitrogen with regulator adapted to a a/c manifold set.
Hook to the low and high side. Start applying pressure and spraying areas with soapy water. I go up to 200psi at times but can usually find the leak prior to that. Saves a lot of time and money (not using Freon). The downside for you would be the bottle. May not be cost effective for the few to
We of use.

I’ve lived in the Richmond area (Ray County) my entire life. I’m 15 miles north of Richmond now. Also have family and friends south of the river.
