Tool Box Liner -OEM

We just started selling OEM Replacement PVC tool box liner kits for Matco Tool boxes this month. I was wondering if people preferred the higher quality PVC or the light weight foam?

I know Matco and Snap on has sold both in the past, but never really was interested in OEM to fit liners and only recently got into 100% thicker PVC.

Any helpful feedback would be appreciated!

The best liner made is the stuff SO uses for KRL boxes. It's thin, tough, holds tools in place and stays put in the drawer.

I'd love to find a cheaper source that sells it by the roll.

I hate thick liner. It takes up precious height.

X2 on that. They've use a few different materials in the KRLs over the years, all pretty good. But the one I like the best, I think it's made of thin rubber; not PVC or Vinyl or Foam.

I just needed to redo the liners on a Macsimizer I'm reselling, and ordered a roll of drawer liner from MAC. What came, (for $144 for a roll) was thin, and somewhat shiny soft foam. The back was a bit sticky, so you kind of had to peal it from the roll. Seems nice enough, but not my favorite stuff by any means. What was the biggest PITA, was that for $144, the roll was about 6" short of being able to do an entire double bank. I mean, WTF, MAC??? The manufacturer of the MAC liner was Mantis Products in Ontario, (same company that makes those mini-rototill machines).

You can get the same stuff from Harbor Freight for a LOT less.

My Snap On box came with a strange, thin, almost paper-like liner - it's ike it's really compressed foam, but really thin. Kind of hard to describe. It seems to be hard wearing, and oil/water resistant, and doesn't tear when I chuck tools in or grab them out. These I've left in the two rows of small drawers, but in the full width drawers, and lift out tray, I cut some rubber matting up, that came on the shelf racking of one of my old vans, to fit. It's textured on one side, rather than smooth, and the other side (the side that is usually facing up) it's ribbed. I have it in reversed, so the ribbed side is facing down. I'd say it's 2, maybe 3mm, thick, so doesn't take up too much height. There's just room in the shallow drawers for a 32mm socket to lay on it's side and just clear the bottom of the drawer above it.

Anywayyyyyyyyy..... I was thinking about swapping it all out to matching liners, maybe a thin neoprene type material? Looking around on ebay and the like for universal liners, to cut to fit, and lots of boxes on here, seems to mostly be the anti-slip webbing type stuff. Not sure that's what I'm after - I think I'd prefer a "solid" (as in no see through gaps) liner, not too soft it's bouncy, but not so hard it's actually solid, if you follow me. And not too thick either - don't want to lost height as someone else mentioned. 2-3mm is probably the max I'd want to go to.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Our Liners are actually the same ones Matco Tools uses in their boxes. I know they used to carry that light weight foam like Snap-On, but we sold that too and it was cheap and honestly not the best for a tool box that actually gets used.

Places like Harbor Freight mostly sells items made in China! And us being a US Manufacturer we really never know what's in the PVC.

We actually make yoga mats too and those do work great. However, some of the additives that make yoga mats non-toxic and skin safe are actually corrosive to tools. So although it works, if it isn't kept dry it may cause issues. That's why we don't recommend it when people ask about it.

I mean we sell our core stock at $.33/SQ Ft. The master rolls are made 72" wide, but for us to cut off 3 to 10 feet it is pretty easy. Our stock is about 1/8" thick and has moderate grip and decent cushion. But if you own a Matco Tool or Snap on tool box you would be used to it.

Although over the past year they have been going to China more.

You're confusing the stuff SO uses/used in their lower end boxes vs. the stuff they use in their high end KRL boxes. (it's not light weight foam!!) It's thin, grippy and tough as nails.

You should take a look at SO KRL tool box. If you can source that exact stuff at a price lower then SO MSRP you'll do very well.

Several years ago, on THIS SITE I researched the matting used in Snap On KRL boxes.
I found out that it is a proprietary product that can NOT BE BOUGHT elsewhere !!!!!

Read this old thread/posts................................

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-55239.html

I did buy some very good material from Mike Ryan (family owns JONCO) on EBAY
that is similar to Snap On matting

I was (one of) the person(s) who got very involved in searching for the KRL drawer liner material.

There is one mfg (I cant remember now) that developed the KRL material in conjunction with the engineers at Snap-On. Another company called JONCO takes the bulk material and cuts it to size for Snap On. No one else can buy this material in bulk form, cut form or remnants.. You can only buy KRL drawer liner from Snap On or its dealers. That issue should be closed..............

Now then, JONCO has other drawer liner products. Mike Ryan (family ownes JONCO) was/is sells misc drawer liner through EBAY. I needed material for my STANLEY VIDMAR.
Mike Ryan agreed to custom cut his next best available (Best meaning KRL) material for my VIDMAR. It does not creap and seems to keep tools in their place. One negative too me is that material is fairly smooth and impression shows when you remove tools, where as the KRL/Snap On material has that textured surface that doesnt show the impression (or at least not as clearly)........(edit) slight impression seems to go away after tool is removed

Anyway................do what you will!!!!!!!!!!

Actually our material is the same that other converters use in their tool box liner materials. We used to sell a PE Foam that tool box manufacturers used as budget liner, but honestly it was very light and I was glad to see more of them moved to the PVC the past few years. .. But PE foam is a 1/8 of the cost.

But we are starting to offer replacement liner kits soon. We stressing the Matco Double bay right now as those are the ones we have made in the past.

Saying that...If anyone wants a swatch of the material I'd be happy to send it to them at no charge. Just message me your address and I'll drop it in the mail tomorrow. We lightened out tackiness the past year as we heard in the south the heat would make the tools stick, but not enough to notice a difference.

Thanks!!

I just ordered a set of new liners from my matco guy a few months ago and I love them. However they are definitely sticky with heavier tools, and my 4lb sledge actually stuck so bad it ripped the liner up with it.

Replacement kits for the Harbor Freight 44" boxes would sell like hot cakes and they would be easy to make.

Matco changed Liner Suppliers last year and that has been happening more and more with the liners ripping. Some of the replacement liner kits they have also been sitting around awhile which can cause the liner to get more aggressive.

I will send Free samples via the mail to anyone interested. I have done so already and have got some really good feedback.

Thanks for the Harbor Freight Box heads up as well. I know they get most of their items out of China so it would be nice to know we have a USA liner to go inside of it. I'll think about adding it to our line next month.

Thanks!

I just rec'd the sample Eric sent me. I'm impressed. This stuff looks very close to the stuff SO uses in KRL boxes.

It's thin, tough and seems to have the right amount of "no slip" characteristics without being too sticky.

Eric even indicated that they can custom cut just about any width or shape you need.

Our Sale price to Garage Journal Members for a 72" x 20' Rolls will continue until December 2015. $90 with Free shipping and around a 2 to 3 day turn around. It has been extremely popular and we are gearing up to make it ship within 1 business day.

However, if anything is needed custom, please still let me know. Most Double Bay Kits price out around $130 to $150 if your buying in single quantity so the $90 cut it your self special is the way to go. 20 Linear Ft is enough to do about 95% of all Tool Boxes with a little left over for other projects.

I always appreciate the feedback. Sorry I haven't been on in a while.

Yes we are. Its the most cost effective size and the best Square footage for most US made tool boxes.

Later this year we will sell smaller width rolls at 20', but so far most of the demand is for 72" for the price savings.

Sorry if this is repetitive but it sounds to good to be true...so the roll is 6 ft deep and 20 ft long?

yes the Roll is 72" Wide x 20 ' Long. It is the most common square footage for most normal boxes. The custom or more advanced boxes may need 30', but its a rarity.
