i was speaking more or less for the torx/hex, but yep, my main socket set is one of those 300ish piece ones.

Where is lux usually imported from?

"Lux" has different suppliers, pliers from "HR" India, sockets + ratchets + wrenches i guess Taiwan, they once had a mini bolt cutter from Keiba/Japan, other "Lux" pliers from germany, Lux hammers from Taiwan (?) , France, Italy, Germany, striking tools germany, saws from germany, italy and probably "import". They have different price/quality levels. For example the cheapest screwdrivers ("Basic" series) which look imported with chrome blade, no black tips, round blade and plastic handle, then better/more expensive ones with plastic handle and round blade/black tips (from Felo) sold as the "Profi" series. Another "Profi" series with 2 (3 ?) component handle (also Felo) and a "Profi Plus" series (also Felo) with hex blade, hex bolster and 2( 3?) component handle.

The "open stock" prices of Craftsman are not that cheap it seems. Sometimes i can buy Hazet stuff for their prices :)
While browsing through the Sears website i found this. I wonder if its a good design/idea ?

I went to an ace hardware I don't normally go to and was surprised to find a large knipex selection.

behind glass ?? Must be expensive :D
it seems they dont sell many of them, the Alligators still have the old design

I'd be a bit nervous breaking a bolt loose with that hex bit socket. :wtf:

My local tool shop started carrying Knipex items from the earlier this year. They simply purchased a store display unit....like a small sampler unit with about a dozen different products for viewing. It's not behind glass like Lowes, but it's still behind a counter and requires someone's attention before you can handle them.

yeah, but maybe its their new and improved "2-in-1" design: When the large hex part is broken off you can use the smaller hex part ??? :D ;) Or a "Torsion" socket ? who knows... :D

20-115_mid_res.jpg

it was much nicer quality than any of the other saws at homedepot

i still remember seeing a 'fatmax' branded screwdriver set at homedepot for like 15 bucks, made in france. Should have picked it up

Where can I order that at?

You can go to any HD and pick it up.

The OEM could possibly be supplying Facom, but the Facom one is definitely a different design from this Stanley.

Monte, thanks for those photos!
I remember you posting pics of the metal-working shop, where they had the round table with each "station" having an articulating vise (awesome!).

Stanley has a saw factory in france as well as bought (in 1970) a measuring tool factory (tape measures etc) aside from the Facom factories. So maybe Stanley makes them theirself like they also make their wood saws (pic a couple of pages ago) or maybe Facom makes it and they have their own models so there is no confusion of the consumer why there are identical tools so the consumer might think Facom are now hobby/DIY tools. Same with the screwdrivers, in this case maybe all made by Bost, but different models for Facom (+ new USAG) on the one hand and same models for Bost + Stanley (+ Pastorino) on the other.
(Stanley germany now also has the old USAG design too though as "Stanley Fatmax XL")

more info (in french) here: http://www.stanleyoutillage.fr/Entreprise/usine Besançon.aspx [They also had a page like this about their saws with pics of the production but it seems its gone...]

ps:
@ breakfasteatre: The french Stanley screwdrivers are also available through SK hand tools.

@Dave:
I invite me myself :D
no, the Airbus visit was because i had luck, there is a "Family day" every year (?) and i got a ticket from someone who was already there, the other exhibitions/fairs are open to the public so i just buy a ticket, except the hardware fair from march its only for "trade visitors"/Businessmen but i just ordered a ticket online and entered without problems. Most people were wearing business suits though and i was a bit "flamboyant" with normal clothes and sport shoes and a big bag of catalogs in my hand :D
The next hardware fair in cologne will be in march 2012 so if you will be here let me know so i can order a ticket for you too ;)
btw: There will be more pics of a car workshop fair with pics of Hazet + Klann etc. later this october/november ;).

@superautobacs:
would be awesome to have a workshop like that or at least to work there :)
Maybe i can ****** up one of their tables with vises when production will finally move overseas :D

Gedore news letter! Just got this in my inbox: looks like Gedore is really making a effort to expand here in the USA! Links below to info that may or may not be interesting! :)

Note: looks like Gedore's new tools distribution is near the BMW/VW factories in the southern part of the USA.... coincidence? I don't think so! :)

Seems they have specifically gone after three sectors of the tool market: automotive, aerospace and wind energy.

I am really terrible at taking photos in my toolbox, but I'd like to share some of the Euro tools in there anyway. Most of them are new acquisitions, none of them are really special, and they were quite frugal for the most part.

toolsfromeurope.jpg

This Acesa 7in locking plier is from Spain. I don't know how vintage it is, I don't remember where I got it but it's been taken out of daily use, replaced by USA Vise Grip and new Grip-On. I checked out the Acesa website and their new locking pliers look like Grip-On, these have a release action like Grip-On that I prefer over the Vise Grips.

toolsfromeurope.jpg

One of these things is not like the other... the German Craftsman Knipex Cobra 10 was a warranty exchange from a very old set of Craftsman alligator pliers. I don't like these yet but I'll give them some time.

toolsfromeurope.jpg

On the left, two 7in Spanish Grip-On 7in Ominum locking pliers, $15 for the pair. Immediately they impressed me over the USA Vise Grips to the right in fit, finish and ease of use. Call me a convert.

toolsfromeurope.jpg

Wera Kraftform drivers, made in Czech Republic. The Kraftform Comfort set of drivers came with a big German flag sticker on the front, touting German engineering. These compliment the Snap-On drivers on the left and replaced some China Kobalt bit drivers. I like the flex shaft bit driver (392) and miniature driver (813R) a lot. These are all quite inexpensive on Amazon, cheaper than comparable Kobalt for the most part if you only look at the specials.

I know there are more Euro tools in there but the key for the lower box isn't here.

How do I know if I'm ordering the new Schlüsselknarre (model 7R) instead of the old Taiwanese ones (model 7R)? :question: :dunno: All I want to do is buy those wrenches in the picture.

Make it easy for me Gedore! :thumbup:

the PDF says the new wrenches will be available from october 1. You probably have to specify that you want to have the new german made wrenches because i don´t think that dealers and Gedore will throw away the old ones....

What's the tooth-count on those rat. wrenches?

AFAIK, Hi-Five is/has produced for the Stanley brand: Husky, Blackhawk, Proto, Facom; and Gedore, SK.

Servus, folks,

I have been rather busy lately, thus I didn't have much time for the forum. However, I was able to acquire a number of new tools from the old world that I'd like to show you. I hope you regard my return to the forum as an "appropriate one." ;)

Nice bag, isn't it?

But the tools I found inside are even nicer in my opinion:

hopefully they don´t raise prices too much... ?

What's the tooth-count on those rat. wrenches?

The new Gedores ?? They dont say anything about that....
only that the working angle is between 5° and 7°
the old ones 72 teeth

@CHreese:
nice pics and tool selection as always !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nice bag !!! I love the flex head ratchet !!!!!!!! :) how do you like it ??
Is there a VBW sale somewhere ?? :)

I think I fixed it. Not sure.

Somehow I have this feeling that the rat. wrenches are not going to be the standard Taiwanese/Chinese fare of 72-teeth. I find it odd that they didn't include that information.....yet.

@Chreese,

Thanks for sharing those exotic candies. :thumbup:

It looks like Airbus is a good Lista customer :bounce:

I've just received a few Facom socket wrenches I bought on ebay.de, not the most used sizes (29,26,24,23). These are the 76 series (hex in one side, bi-hex the other side), they're quite old, not OGV, but never used, made in France. The finish is satin, nice industrial look but not as nice as the new model, however for 3 euros each it's not a bad deal...

@superautobacs:
i dunno maybe different amount of teeth. Small sizes maybe less teeth, larger sizes more teeth ? They only write: " practical working angle between 5° and 7°". So maybe between 72 and and 51.43 :) (52) teeth ??

@cantause:
;)
nice wrenches ! I like the finish. Matt wrench and polished heads. Like most Hazet tools :)

Hrmm, interesting. It reminds me of the old school Proto ratcheting crowsfoot, only non-interchangeable heads and that it's made into a wrench from, with a 5* working angle.

proto_14dr_500_flare_socket_set_tac_f_cropped.jpg

Retail price is roughly $250 US.

The "HandForm" screwdriver has an interesting design/feature. Never seen a hex holster built in like that.

I had been thinking that the 5* and 7* Gedore mentions is actually talking about the offset angle; not the working angle. :headscrat:confused:

@Cantause,

At those prices I would've grabbed those, too! Those were not cheap when I bought them in France, even in the smallest sizes.

i like the taiwanese version better :) Here the "Vata" tools version:
http://www.vata.com.tw/pviewitem2.asp?sn=745&area=&cat=#
(and probably cheaper too :D)

The "HandForm" screwdriver has an interesting design/feature. Never seen a hex holster built in like that.

yeah pretty odd. Never saw this too....
For 1.- € i had to have it :D Odd tools are cool :D maybe i can find a set of them.... :)

I had been thinking that the 5* and 7* Gedore mentions is actually talking about the offset angle; not the working angle. :headscrat:confused:

interesting... the english text says "The heads are set at a practical working angle between 5° and 7°" so you are right, the german text on the other hand: "Die Mechanik der neuen Schlüsselknarren wurde aus der bewährten Mechanik der GEDORE U-20 Knarren abgeleitet und weiterentwickelt. Hierbei wurde ein verbesserter praxisorientierter Arbeitswinkel zwischen 5° und 7° realisiert" which translates into: "The mechanics of the new wrench was derived from the proven mechanics of the GEDORE U-20 ratchet and improved. A improved practical working angle between 5 ° and 7 ° was realized."
So in this context (and also without the context) they´re talking about the working angle. So somebody from Gedore messed it up while writing the text...
Or the ratchet wrenches have both a 5 degree offset and 5 degree working angle :) But i guess the one style is flat and the other with reverse lever with 13 degree offset like the old ones (or maybe 15 degree now as usual ??)

@ Monte: Thanks so much for the pics of the Airbus factory--VERY interesting. I'm currently an A&P (aircraft mechanic) student in the US (flugzeugmechaniker studenten, right?). Given the breadth of material aircraft mechanics must be familiar with, and the critical nature of our work, I've often wondered why the USA doesn't have formal apprenticeships for aircraft mechanics. Of all the industries where an apprenticeship would be important... I think aircraft mechanics is it. Just my 2 cents.

@jride200: no problem ! And yes right ! Good german !! ;)
Fluggerätemechaniker/Flugzeugmechaniker have to learn 3.5 years here and decide themself for one specialization which they want to learn: -maintenance , -manufacturing technology or jet engine technics. How is it in the US ??

has someone already one of these new gadgets for their "gearwrenches" ? A handle to attach to the open end ?

Hi folks,

Thanks for your kind comments.

@CHreese:
nice pics and tool selection as always !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nice bag !!! I love the flex head ratchet !!!!!!!! :) how do you like it ??
Is there a VBW sale somewhere ?? :)

Thanks, Monte.
I haven't used the Stahlwille 517 ratchet yet but its operation is pretty smooth and the flex-mechanism is great. Don't hesitate to buy it.
Only a few of the VBW pliers I bought were on sale. At the time I ordered the stuff, this year's first VBW promo was still valid. The only current VBW sale I'm aware of is this one. However, I can't complain about my Stahlwille/VBW dealer. He's always willing to offer attractive prices to me.

@Chreese,

Thanks for sharing those exotic candies. :thumbup:
I like the 3.5mm next to the 41mm. What uses a 41mm fastener?

My pleasure. I even have a 3.2 mm wrench but missed to take a picture next to the 41 mm wrench. As far as I know, 41 mm wrenches are used for M24 and M27 bolts and nuts. Now if you want to know what I a 41 mm wrench for: I like the Stahlwille Open-Box wrenches No. 14 a lot. Thus, I wanted a complete set. And since Stahlwille offers those wrenches from 6 to 41 mm I simply had to get the 41 mm wrench. Yep, that's crazy, even my dealer thinks so.

@Cantause
Nice tools! Your pictures remind my to buy some Facom tools. And the Mitutoyo measuring tools you own: Amazing!

yeah pretty odd. Never saw this too....
For 1.- € i had to have it :D Odd tools are cool :D maybe i can find a set of them.... :)

My dad has such a "Meister (?) Handform" screwdriver. Green handle, PH1. I will take a photo of it as soon as possible.

Now up to some older post I want to reply to:

ok i never looked at the Ikea stuff :D Last time i was at Möbel Kraft and once at Möbel Höffner... So if you say its good i`ll believe you and consider Ikea too :)

Not all Ikea cabinets are created equally. In my opinion, the quality of the Faktum drawer cabinets (kitchen) is good but I would stay away from drawers of the Pax series. And, of course, you can get better quality if you are willing to pay higher prices. All in all, I think the price/performance ratio of Ikea products is good.

yes plus a bunch of individual punches... :) (Format, Promat, Dako, Gedore etc.). BUT i want a set in metal case for at home and maybe a spare set :) The prices are not too high: click. PB is quite expensive....
hmm red case ? interesting, do you have a pic ?

No picture, yet.
I see you are not a real PB-fan. :confused: Monte, you really disappoint me. ;)

not yet. "Magic" tools are difficult to find - only saw the 3pc. pliers set from last year here. So i will order one "out of the blue". Can´t go wrong.
PB hammers are quite expensive, especially in 50mm, but their rounded head is interesting. I already have a 30mm (Habero), 40mm (Halder) and 60mm (Format/Halder) recoilless hammer. Wiha would be nice too because they´re blue :D ;) just looked in the catalogs: Halder + Gedore same length (wood + metal handle) Supercraft 3 component handle is longer though. Wiha metal + wood handle longer than Gedore + Halder.

Correct, the information I gave was wrong/misleading. I was exclusively commenting on the Halder Supercraft with three component handle. That's the only Halder recoil-less hammer I own. My other recoil-less hammers are made by Gedore and PB.

No but thats exactly what I´m looking for - a small light weight, ergonomic drill up to 10mm with 2 speed with chuck with spindle lock, min. 500 watt and 5 mtr. cable. Then i looked at every manufacturers catalog and found the Fein with exactly these specifications :D what a coincidence :D ;)

I'm tempted by the Fein BOP 6. As far as two speed drills are concerned, I will opt for a Duss in the long run. For a moment, I thought about buying a Metabo if I could get a good close-out-price but I wasn't thrilled about the ergonomics. The body is too big for my hands.

5" single hand models like the Metabo FSX 200 or similar models are quite practical if you hold the work piece with one hand and sand with the other or for vertical surfaces or small spots which you want to sand where 6" is too big etc. The FSX 200 did cost me 19,95 at A.T.U. :).

I regularly use my 6" Festool ES 150/3 that way. Operating it (vertically) with one hand is definitely not a problem. Just give it a try. If a 6" ROS was on my list I would probably decide between Festool and RUPES. Metabo, Bosch and Makita could be an option if they were available for a lot less money from GB.

How do you like your "Energieampel"?

There are a couple of well known work clothes "manufacturers" next to Blakläder here in Europe, but i don´t know if they still produce here, in most cases i think not: Fristads www.fristads.com , Kansas www.kansas.dk/int/ , Wenaas www.wenaasusa.com , Bierbaum Proenen www.bp-feelthedifference.de , Snickers www.snickersworkwear.com , Helly Hansen www.hhworkwear.com ,Planam www.planam.de , FHB www.fhb.de , Rofa www.rofa.de

Not to forget Ötscher. I like my dungarees.

PZ you´ll find usually used for wood screws , PH everything else. So if he is a woodworker then PZ if not PH. PH also fits in PZ but not vice versa so i would go with PH. Except if you´re a real good friend then you get a slotted/PH/PZ set for him :D ;)

PZ can also be found on electric devices, hardware (hinges etc.). To be honest, I think both PH and PZ are a must in (Central) Europe.

nice ! Want one too :) (+ the 1/4" from PB)

The Ko-Ken 3715SLK T-handle is something I really can't be without, I believe. Monte, do you know if it's already available in Germany?

@superautobacs
Your Vessel screwdriver with the translucent red handle is a beauty. :drool: Thanks for the picture!

I'm glad that I could help. ;) Congrats!

@bcjames
Congrats on your new Stahlwille tools and the mug. Stahlwille seems to know that you are a fan of their tools.

@Monte
Those WGB box wrenches with handle ("Zugringschlüssel") you posted some while back, are those yours??? Do you plan to purchase the Gedore box wrenches with handle offered in the Magic promo? When will you get a 3/4" socket set? :)
Which set of hooks and picks would you recommend in addition to the PB set? I also have two small hooks/picks from Genius. A buddy of mine liked the Genius 4 pieces set I had bought as a spare set, so I sold it to him. Now what to get: Witte or Turnus?
BTW, Matador replied to my email within 30 minutes (!) but they didn't seem to be willing to share the origin of the 430 series wrenches with me.
I wonder which company really made your Bergin SB 4001 L/R drill. The drill looks a lot like my trusty old Kress SBLR 2117 drill. Your Bergin could be the small brother/sister of my Kress drill. Yep, I'll post a picture of it.

@BWright
Congrats on your new tools. I'm glad that you could pick up some tools from the old world during your trip to Austria.

Monte, would you say that Knipex and NWS are same in quality?

I'm not Monte but ...
The NWS QuattroGripp pliers I bought this year didn't live up to the expectations I had from my experiences with Knipex, Gedore and VBW water pump pliers. The jaws didn't align properly. I contacted NWS and found out that their customer service was excellent. NWS promptly sent me a new pair of QuattroGripp pliers. The jaw alignment is better but from my point of view, Knipex, VBW and Gedore are closer to what I would call "perfect".

Regarding Zeal tools, all I can say is "WOW!" Very, very impressive. :thumbup:

@chreese:
nice Garant ratchet !! Does the handle have "ribs" (on the side ?) like the PB handles ?

I'll try to post a photo in order to clarify that.

@JayL:
Most of the cordless drills don´t say anything, the Makita 6270 i have dont say anything too, only on the outer package "Made in PRC". The tools in the pic will be made in PRC too. The highest priced Makita LXT tools are also PRC. There is (was ?) a cordless drill "Makita 6317" which always was made in the USA or UK, i don´t know if they still make them there. The rule of thumb is: no origin on the tool = PRC.

On the sign of my Makita 14.4 V LXT BHP 440 (bought in 2006) it says: "Made in Japan"

Chreese
