Monte if I ever get around to going to Germany, screw the tourist spots, I want to see the TOOLS! I'm sure you'd lead me around on a tour, right? :D

I'm so very jealous. And that's a big wrench...

Thanks Monte. I paid the guy $100. The steel is still good and would clean the dollies and spoons as you suggested. Any other cleaning tips. :)

@monte : Very nice Hazet booth :bounce: Did they say when the'll release the new 916-1 ratchet in 3/8 ? I also noticed in "Der Checker" that Lina's garage is full-equiped by Hazet. bye bye Facom:3gears:

@ash95608 : Very interesting review. Thank you:thumbup: Actually i had one of these NWS pliers in my hand last week, in a shop. They're definatly better made than my Knipex. They're ticker and better balanced.

@Sick Puppy : the Athlet model number is "1430 GR.30". It's made in Taiwan.

Great video, ash! I may need to pick up a set of these to go with my others from you.

Monte - great pics of tools and Lina :). Those booths would be a candy shop for me.

Monte, have you ever shared your opinion of the new 916 ratchet? Smartcase? Anything
Else stand out to you?

BTW, I used to work for Hazet's partner, NTN.

@jayL

he didnt want to accept the 50 or $70 ? :)

I reckon at half the price of new dollies then I'm still way ahead paying $100 for the whole lot. Anyway he brings me a lot of NOS Snap On so I'll ask for discount on next purchase. :)

How do you recondition your dollies and spoons? Need to bring these to mirror finish. Some of the dollies have minor dings and wonder if it would be good to belt sand these first to remove the dings.

For now I just wire brushed the tools in the bench grinder. Just noticed it also that these were West German made.

@Automatique
yup my most favourite booth ! All the black + blue ..... I´m still ***** :D
i forgot to ask about the 916-1 in 3/8" and 1/4" but i will do on sunday.

@bart1
The smart case is a nice idea, but i don´t know if its a must have, if you don´t have a 1/4" socket set ok why not, but its just a different more fancy package compared to the regular tool cases.
The new 916-1 ratchet looks a bit different but the ratcheting feel is similar to the older Hazet fine tooth ratchet and similar ratchets from Facom, Acesa etc.
On the internet pics the ratchet has a "Taiwanese finish" but in real life it has a "german finish" (not perfect) so you can still see that the ratchet was drop forged because of the marks. The handle has a flat shape so it´s comfortable to hold when you pull or push the ratchet. The sale price is valid until february 2012 so i´ll get me one of them until then :)
Other nice things are the "Hazet cockpit" tool box and the extendable ratchet which is unique to Hazet afaik (with this function)

ps: NTN bearings ?

if they have dings and dents i would belt sand them and then using finer and finer grit to polish them to a mirror or almost mirror finish so they are smooth and dont leave marks in the sheet metal of the car and with a polished surface they dont rust anymore (or not as fast). The surfaces which are too difficult to polish and/or are not necessary to polish could be painted with hammered paint for example.
The new Peddinghaus tools are from France since a while so you own the original Peddinghaus even made in W. Germany which is even better :D

Nice FN, it's one of the last "old" industry that still work but not as well as before apparently... I study in Liège, this city was well known for its weapon industry in the past, a lot of small gun factories, a lot of armory schools... Now there's only one school left, with a lot less students than in the past, the FN Herstal is not the big factory as it was in the past, my grandfather worked there, my uncle too... Everybody had someone in their family who worked "at the FN", making gun, motorcycles, cars,...
Now, we almost never hear about the FN, it's a medium size factory as many others...

This thread is now about tools made in Belgium.

Well I put 2 Belgian made tools(sight tool and something else) on layaway today also they come with an FN FiveseveN and 3 mags. :D

The other thing about the Smart Case is that it's currently a good bit cheaper than any of their other sets... I was thinking of getting the fine tooth set, but the SC is something like 2/3 the price.

Maybe some more people will post thoughts on the 916-1 after some hard use. I'll have to check the sale price.

Cockpit doesn't do anything for me, but I love the extendable ratchet. Hazet is not the only company that makes one, though.

Yessir, NTN bearings. Worked there 9.5 years and have been to many of their plants in the US and Japan.

Thanks Monte. For now I stopped with the wire brush. The tools although not used much had been kept for a long time by the owner. Rust had taken it's toll and although no real dings the rust marks are a bit deep and would require proper tools to fix. Currently I'm still looking for a belt sander as I don't have one.

I'm a newbie on this body work stuff and still waiting for my MIG welder to arrive. Oxy Ace I already have. None the less I'm really not thinking of tackling very difficult tasks but just the casual repairs here and there.

@johnnybentwrench:
one more pic for you:
(you might ask member "heisse-nuesse" here in this forum if he has more pics since he is the Hazet photographer.)

@Automatique:
the new 916-1 ratchet in 3/8" will follow next year, the 1/4" version this year.
The old design fine tooth ratchets will be discontinued.

@bart1:
NTN was at the fair too......:

@bart1:
ok i didnt look at the prices, but if the "Smart case" set is cheaper, then i would get it, you could later buy one of the fine tooth ratchets, maybe when the brand new 1/4" dr. "916-1" ratchet will be released later this year.

The other extendable ratchets i know are the "locking type" where you have to lock the ratchet into position. There are usually like 3 or 4 positions where you can lock the ratchet (like this). The other type i know of is the type which you have to assemble like this one.
The Hazet ratchet can be locked in any position. klick
Even if there is something similar then not from germany or from a no-name company so i dont buy it :)

@JayL:
Look out for a belt grinder with a rubber coated wheel to properly grind the dollies. Which MIG welder did you order ?

@Automatique:
nice charger and light !!!! The non repairable lights **** :) good decision to buy a repairable one !
ps: Do you have some more pics of your other tools ?? :) (new camera ?) :) ;)

We have 220V 50/60 Hz standard here so I went for the Millermatic 180 Autoset.

For now I'm currently looking at this multitool belt sander. There are really not much available options for me locally with regards to this tool category unless I go Chinese made.

OT : Thanks

Also, what do you think about JMP chargers ?

I talked to a employee of the manufacturer today. The JMP/Facom battery chargers are made by "Inelco" a danish company (www.inelco.dk) in their factory in poland ( www.inelco.com.pl/keepower.html ). The function is similar compared to C-Tek, there are differences in the charging technology but basically its the same with a lower price. The JMP chargers come with 3 different cables included (c-tek 1). Since its made in Europe and the C-Tek not and I´m too poor for a Fronius or Mawek :) i think i´ll end up with a JMP 4000.
btw. congratulation to you Fronius purchase :)
:thumbup: :pimpflash :bowdown: :pimpflash :drool:
That was a quick decision ;)

"ATHLET" torx drivers

nice!!!!!!!!!! :drool::bowdown:

@JayL:
the belt sander from the first link looks good because it has rubber wheels. The other one seems to have metal wheels which is not as good except if you only want to use the top of the belt which you dont want to. A disc sander is quite practical too on the other hand....The best would be a belt sander with a rubber wheel which is at least 3" wide or even better like 6" with a incorporated disc sander....(or buy 2 machines...)

@mofo62

flyingkite,

When were you in Germany?

It stinks that you were not able to purchase anything from Bauhaus after taking those pictures. Thanks for posting the cool pictures :drool:.

How were the prices for Bosch, Knipex, Wera screwdrivers, and Wisent screwdrivers (Wiha) compared to U.S. prices?

Which cities in Germany did you visit?

Did you visit any other tool stores besides Bauhaus?

The Bauhaus store you took pictures was located in which German city?

Thanks,

Dave

Servus,

Monte, I was having a look in the Athlet catalogue for this bit holder, and am not having much luck. Can you do me a huuuuge favour and tell me what the model number is for this please? Thank you! :thumbup:

I bought one (actually two - one for my father, one for me) of those Athlet pivoting bit holders when they were on sale in a German store last year. My experiences with this bit holder are not "too good". It's very difficult to apply downward pressure on the screw. As a consequence, it's almost impossible to drive a screw without stripping it. If your regularly have to work in close quarters a Festool cordless drill equipped with an eccentric chuck is what I would recommend.

Hope this helps,

Chreese
