Yep, font is really bad... BUT...To those unhappy with the font, go to your preferences (drop-down from your user name at the top) and change the "style" to "stock XF 2.2 style". This makes it similar to the old forums and much easier to read.
I cant find that option under preferences....

Ryan,
Appreciate your hard work in getting this forum updated. We'll have teething pains, but 99% of us will get over it and start focusing on content instead of style. My first impression is that it will take a while to get used to, but I don't hate it. ;- )

One question/request- the round avatars are not an improvement, IMO-too much detail is cropped out and the scale changed to make most of them unrecognizable... probably not high on your list of priorities, but I know a lot of us look at avatars to see who's posting to any given thread, sometimes to get a feel for the personality of another member. Any chance of going back to the rectangular avatars ?- these are kinda like peeping through a keyhole.

You are the only one that can control how and when you get notified... Go here:

From there, you can control what you are watching/being notified by....
That's not what I was talking about. I was talking about under my account->preference the section at the bottom titled "Receive a notification when someone…" everything was checked to alert by default. It would have been nice to have it unchecked by default.

Ryan, I've noticed a small issue but I want to say thank you first. I know there have been a lot of negative comments about the new software but you took your time and money to give everyone here a place to share their garages and knowledge. Tha k.younfor all.that you do for us.

When I use the Garage Journal mobile app, it shows that I'm logged in via Talktalk. Not sure if that's a bug or if it's by design. I also noticed where you said the Tapatalk plugin isn't installed, but it's working on my phone.

hi @Ryan,

i pretty much just wanted to tell you that you did a really good job on this migration. i'm a very detail-oriented person, and so far, i can't find anything major.
i'm assuming (hoping?) xenforo provides good migration tools that got you a lot of the way there, but i can tell that you put a lot of work into this.

for example, i was surprised to see 301 redirects properly implemented for the various kinds of links:

Code:
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=468842
->
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/ultimate-interchangeable-blade-screwdriver-set.468842/
or
Code:
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=8841327#post8841327
->
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/tools-from-the-old-world.28952/page-1637#post-8841327
^ even fragments are rewritten!

good **** right there.

minor things...

when i go to 'my content', i don't see all my posts. is that expected? for example, i know i have a recent post in the zoro coupons thread (a post on may 10), but my most recent post appearing in 'my content' is from may 5. i can give screenshots or more info if you can't reproduce the issue. edit: it seems like it just shows about 80 posts (4 pages * 20), but i can't see how they're are selected. they're not the 80 most recent posts. they're not the 80 oldest posts. they're not OPs of threads. sup with that?

also, would you consider getting the retro, image-based emoji from the old board? e.g. :shocking:
i feel they're an important part of existing posts, and some context is lost without them rendered. it's uh.. history? idk lol
quickly looking at this: https://xenforo.com/docs/xf2/content/#smilies
if i'm reading that correctly, it looks like it would be trivial to add them all back as custom smilies with custom text replacement. that would be a slick, native solution.
but if you didn't want to do that for some reason (maybe you secretly hate them and want them to not be used going forward), a simple fix could be to host them all in /oldemoji/ or something and then write a little script to do a regex replacement for each type of emoji on the posts table of your db. replace them with bbcode to render the respective image or whatever is appropriate. a quick hack to get the old posts rendering properly.

but for the love of god, please don't enable giphy support. lol

everything else i probably won't bother mentioning since it's kind of personal taste, and i'll just dress it up for myself how i like with userscripting. for example, i don't think the link css is contrasty enough. links don't stand out enough from post text.

Ryan, my hat's off to you for pulling this off. It sounded like it had to be done and I'm sure you are happy to be through the worst of it. Thanks for your efforts to keep the forum going and utilizing recent software.

One bug I noticed on the changeover is that the font size coding in the old forum didn't carry over into XF. If you look inside the reply and turn on the coding "[]", I see the code for making the text bigger for various headings, but they must equate to something different now in XF. Before a code of [ SIZE=4 ] meant you were going to get text about twice the size of the default text. Now my prior thread replies show text that is smaller than the default body text. So all the headings and titles in my legacy replies are displaying small, not larger, and get lost. My hunch is size 4 in the old forum doesn't mean the same as size 4 in the new forum, as it appears the new forum matches the text sizes you might find in MS-Word or something where 4 is very small.

One thing I couldn't figure out how to do in the new forum is see a list of my Attachments uploaded over the years. Not a big deal, but occasionally I would scroll back through them to find a photo I inserted previously to use again. The uploaded photos all seem to be there yet in my threads (luckily!), but I can't review them all in one place like I used be able to do. Maybe I'm missing something and need to explore more.

And now for a couple quick suggestions if possible... On the forum listings, display actual Reply and View counts for the higher values, not "3K" or "1M". There seems to be plenty of room to display even millions for the view count without taking more space. Grizz's Mixed Grill thread at the bottom, for instance, shows 1M views where I know the actual view count is maybe 1,2XX,*** (I don't know actual number).

new-forum-replies-views-count-jpg.1227165

Signature pictures didn't carry over... no big deal since that's a one-time fix for me.

I haven't tried entering a new update on my build thread yet, so there may be other comments still coming on uploading pictures and such. I'm hoping for the best there.

Keep up the great work!

I like the nice clean look. Glad for the switch.
Had some log on problems. It wanted me to accept cookies, but it would not allow me to accept cookies.
Also, the log on was an http instead of https.

Hey guys, I have two suggestions.

First, I do not know if there was any type of message or warning that was sent out but I did not get anything so when the site went down, I was unable to log in until this morning. If it was “scheduled” maintenance, I see no reason we should not have been advised of the impending outage. That said, If yall did inform us and I completely missed it, then please accept my apology and ignore my ignorant rant.

Second, we really need to see where people are from or are. The location part of the avatar section is extremely helpful at a glance. There is more than enough room to place it directly under the “New Member” tag.

To a much less extent, I do not see a reason to display date under imbedded images such as the image name and date and time posted. It just cutters the usable space IMHO.

It will take some getting use to (I miss the user control link) but I like the new look. Thank yall for all the hard work you do and putting up with wretched users like myself.

I don't feel like we are owed anything for a service we don't pay for, and getting a heads up wouldn't have changed anything for anyone.

That said, the loss of location is definitely a big one. You can see it by clicking on a username, but I do hope that can come back to be viewable at all times

If we could change one thing, I really, really miss the “forum jump” menu at the BOTTOM of the page. Being able to read a page, then quickly pick where on the forum to jump to next with out having to scroll up, click extra “to top” buttons, or more steps would be really cool.

I primarily read and post on my iPhone so that forum jump was a huge help.

I gave warnings 2 years out, 1 year out, 3 months out, and one week out. All were feature posts.

I plan to add location and post count back under the username.

thanks for the update and I guess I totally missed the notifications. Sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes.

I was about to mention the loss of the album titles in the my media section; however, I realized that you can hover over your albums and the information pops up. I actually like this feature and its a cool addition to the upgrade.

Like I said, I like the new look.

text sizing/style needs a big rethink and picking of font to help with that and easy reading clarity would be a big plus, I have had use zoom setting for site make bit better .
default forum theme was better than the GJ in many ways but seems theme selection removed from preference options now !
Theme options are good way help everyone get it likeable to diffent browsers/devices and individual needs .

Thank you for your time and efforts, Ryan.
Most of the “getting used to change” things will take care of themselves.
I read through, and see two unaddressed issues that I’d like to agree with:
if/how to re-sort posts with most recent at top of thread
circular vs rectangular avatar pics

The first assumes the viewer is encountering the thread for the first time and wishes to read it in its entirety from the first post - absurd, though from the wording (e.g. “upthread”) of some posts, it is a popular option.
The second is clearly a misguided choice of the software designers, either under the assumtion that every avatar should be a face, or possibly from unfamiliarity with normal human visual perception. If you poll humans whether they derive more information from a 16:9 horizontal rectangle or a circle, I think the results are obvious, and endorsed by the shape and dimensions of our screens. Portholes, peepholes, tele- and micro-scopes notwithstanding, humans want some negative space in the corners of an image, even if it is a face.

There will be more themes once we get the site stable and I have the time to create them.

I did not see an option to change the posts per page count. It looks like the X default is view 20 posts per page. In vb, I had view 100 posts per page and liked that much better. Is there an option somewhere to change that as a personal preference?

We will not have user selectable posts per page as that was causing problems. However, I am currently working on increasing the number of posts per page from 20 to 40.

Another comment on fonts.

I think the real issue is the "darkness" of the font. Or maybe I should save the "contrast" of the font color to the standard. Look at the following screen grab. The words "Garage Journal" are probably bold, but I think that should be the "standard" color/darkness.

My personal preference for fonts is always Time Roman. See how much darker it is. Time Roman Bold

When we launched, we were using New Times Roman... We got so many complaints that we had to make a change.

Frankly, the font we have right now is fine with me.

I can't stand reading New Times Roman, and all the weird fonts that people put in their posts. Whatever this font is now is easy to read, at least for me.

I use Chrome on a tablet and there is an option to switch to standard desktop view.
That is how im currently viewing it (desktop view selected) however its sort of a pain to do every time for just this forum. Other forums im on have the option to disable mobile view in the user preferences.

Are you sure about that? When I first logged on the font was a very thin crowded italic type font. It was horrible. A thicker bold black font would be better if you ask me. I know you didn't..lol

A button for subscribed threads would be nice.
Never mind, I found it under threads with your posts. It’s in the “Forums” drop down if anyone else is looking.
Not sure how I got this font in my quote, but I like it. I may have just clicked ''bold'' Ya, looks like I must have accidentally clicked ''bold''.

I'm not a fan of the font choice but I think I could learn to live with it.

The font size, on the other hand, is WAY TOO BIG on the forum listing (https://www.garagejournal.com/forum) and thread listing pages. It needs to be reduced about 20%. The font size in the thread (replies) themselves is slightly too big. Maybe a 10% reduction would be good. I'm running 1920x1080 on a 24" monitor and I feel like the Windows magnifying glass is on. Not fun.

Well done, Ryan. You've earned some sleep.

I recognize we gotta pay the piper, but I was kinda confused by the ads. Logged off, there are a TON of them. The note to register now (or log on) "to avoid these ads" seems to change the ads, but not avoid them altogether. Is that right?

There seem to be boatload of trackers -- I counted 69 of them on the page above at one point. That's a lot of stuff watching what we do, and kinda makes me squirrely. Did I see that total right?

Location is now working, if you have one listed.

Post counts is now working, AKA called messages now.

It appears that most of the user titles are working.

If you are logged on, you should only see two ads...

1. MaxJax in general discussion only...
2. Header ad in Free Parking... Though I'm thinking about adding 30 ads per page in Free Parking. :)
Dude, you're delirious from a lack of sleep, go back to bed. 🤣

Serious question, how much coffee did you consume during the 39 hour marathon or was it Mt Dew & Dr Pepper ?
