I really like the I beam with 1/2 pipe welded to it for your vice. I like that kind of stuff. Merry Christmas

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

I'm loving the lights. Now just need to get at least a small shed built this coming year so I can get the lawn and garden tools out of the way. Cleaning up to that right front side of the garage will give me a better place for the tools that don't currently have a good home.

Build the biggest shed your zoning allows and you will not regret it. I'm allowed a 10 x 14' garden shed without permanent foundation and use it not only for garden and lawn tools but also for covered storage. It's been a huge asset to help keep the garage space open.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Bagged,
I built an 8' x 16' shed at my last house that I designed myself, it was more work than buying a pre-built unit, but was much stronger and cheaper. You can check it out in my link in my signature. Also if you would like I can send you a copy of the plans and I think I even made a cut list. I designed it to minimize material waste on all the parts I could. Let me know if you are interested.

Here is my semi cleaned up Parker 956 sitting on what will become it's stand, minus the sections of pipe that will be added to it.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Great Thread. Love the work... Think I need to invest in one of those E-tanks. While it may take days to clean it seems a lot less work than abrasives and Elbow Grease...

Unless I missed it in the Previous posts would you mind running through your Painting Process.

I see you appear to be using Foam Rollers - Not spraying... and you say you Cook the Parts? I presume Baking in an oven Helps the Paint Adhere? I've tried Painting my Old Record Vice with the Hammerite. I made sure to clean it Properly before hand, But my results are far from yours...

Thanks for all the inspiration!!!

Thanks for the compliments. Everything metal I paint gets cleaned with acetone first. Then I coat the raw metal surfaces with boiled linseed oil. I let it sit for about 10-15min then wipe off the excess with a rag. I usually let it dry for a day. The I proceed to paint. I've had great luck with spray can hammerite and rustoleum. I usually spray a coat and then bake in an oven at 250F to help he paint cure faster. I've only brushed or rolled on paint once which was on my Wilton vise stand. It came out pretty good but it's just too big for my oven so I let it air dry.

What issues are you having when painting?

There's a 2 grinder minimum...

All joking aside you actually need one for grinding, one for wire wheels, one for polishing/ buffing and other for misc. if you do anything with TiIG welding you need to have a grinding wheel set up just to grind your tungsten. So actually four would be the minimum but he has block grinders so you buy them anytime you find one at good price.

Dumb question, but how do you MOVE some of the massive bases that you create? That's a lot of steel for a mere mortal to slide across the floor. Do you just wrestle them from place to place or do you use a hand truck or other wheeled thingy to move them around? Curious minds need to know. thanks. :)

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Just seems that the paint is easily scratched as if not correctly bonded... I havn't tried the BLO though... Funny I have a bottle of that, always thought it was for woodworking... I dont have an oven, but anything metal on a hot summers day this side gets hot enough to burn... maybe just wait for one of those and try again. It is quite possible that it was cold when I first did my main vice...

On general metal painting I do the physical key/chemical clean/prime/paint/seal process. With the Vice and using hammerite I skipped the Prime and Seal bit. didnt think hammerite needed the seal or primer???

Taumac pretty much nailed it with how many grinders you really need. I have one setup with buffing wheels and one with grinding stones and wire wheels. Then I have a couple getting restored, and a couple spares for now. I'll be putting some 3m scotch brite type pads on one if the grinders. One thing I hate doing is having to swap wheels out each time.

Thanks Brent.

Slik, I do have some dollies with casters to move around some of my tool stands, but I usually just muscle the one in use around. The Wilton stand is sitting on a dolly right now because I took it apart to paint. Prior to paint, I just muscled it around.

Knyte, I find that most spray can paints take months to fully cure completely and they do scratch until fully cured. Baking does help speed up the process significantly. You can also try using heat lamps. They sell cheap ones made for chicken coops at tractor supply, just not sure what they have in your part of the world.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Did a really quick restore on this craftsman bandsaw. Replaced the tires with urethane tires. Replaced the bent trunion bracket. Cleaned everything up and quickly wet sanded the paint for now with 0000 steel wool. Came out ok to get rid of the grime. I just need to connect the original motor and start cutting wood. I want to upgrade the blade guides with a roller bearing style. I might repaint it in the summer and hopefully do a dc motor conversion to cut metal.

Here is the full thread.

It turned out real nice. I read through your other thread too. That was a great deal and such a handy tool to have in the shop even for wood cutting. Every time you just need a quick small piece cut for use in some other project you'll find yourself using that band saw.

nice work indeed!

Thanks fellas.

I got the motor and bandsaw mounted on the same vintage craftsman tool chest. I needed the saw operational today to help my almost 6 year old son build his pinewood derby car for cub scouts.

I stacked 2 3/4" pieces of plywood to press fit on top of the tool chest. It's. it going anywhere.

A very worthy first task for the saw. Make sure he polishes those nail axles with some steel wool to get them nice and slick. Even polished by hand rotation helps.

So I dug my old bead roller out from my dad's garage. I don't remember this thing being as ugly as it is. I definitely want to clean it up, make a stand for it, and add a motor. Any suggestions on upgrades for this bead roller would be greatly appreciated.

Neat little bead roller there, I assume you made it yourself which makes it even cooler. If you plan to motorize it I think it would be cool to wire it to a foot switch that will allow you to go in forward and reverse directions.

I actually got it at a swap meet about 15 years ago. I can't remember what I paid, but it was probably only like $150 or so. It does have some vertical flex which I need to address for it to properly roll thicker sheet metal. Yes I will definitely put a forward/reverse foot switch. I heard some people have used a sewing machine motor and switch which I need to look into.

Mounted this old tv in the garage. It was given to me by my buddy a few years ago but last year it started acting up. The screen goes black after a while when using hdmi connection, but I can use the tv and get over the air HD without any problems. I made a ceiling mount from a piece of strut and ceiling bracket. Eventually I'll upgrade the tv to a fully functional one so I can stream YouTube, etc. I still need to run the antenna cable and clean up the wiring.

Thanks, the speakers will eventually come.

Here's an old thread on the HAMB board about fixing up a bead roller for better performance and looks: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/tool-tech-another-hf-bead-roller-stand.118726/

Thanks for that link. The first roller on that page is the style I'm going to go after. That should help stop the flex and make it look nice.

Thanks. I never open the blinds on that north side of my garage so it's perfect. In the summer I put a window fan which is only on the bottom half.
