$350... hmmmmm

I nearly bought this jack -- missed it by mere hours. The guy came down to $150, but a few hours before I set out to his house to pick it up he informed me his neighbor decided to purchase it. :(

Update!

Found a Walker No.784 (4 TON) unit locally. No idea on age, but it still works. I'll either connect with a local hydraulic shop or maybe HiBall on a rebuild of the ram just to be safe.

Just finished up my Walker 884 restoration.

Pictures of the Jack when I picked it up:

A couple of things I noticed at first, the handle had two pieces of 3/8" plate crudely welded to it, the rear casters needed new bronze linings and the hydraulic unit needed to be rebuilt as the unit could lift the lifting pad but was leaking when I tried to lift any weight.

Some pics of the dirt that accumulated over time:

Onto rebuilding the rear casters:

I purchased some 5/8" high strength-easy-to-machine steel to then turn down to .4960" for the axles

I have my quad serviced by a Polaris dealership which is also an OLD tractor repair shop, way out in the country. I recently stopped in to pick up my quad, and while waiting wandered into his shop. He saw me checking out his old Blackhawk jack, and asked if I knew anything about them, or where he could get parts to repair the hydraulics. Of course, I knew Garage Journal was the place to start with. Here are some photos I took last Friday:

IMG_20131025_155151_063_zpsd9284fe7.jpg

Notice the built-in light. He said it hasn't worked for years, and never even tried to fool with it. The jack had been his father's, long ago.
IMG_20131025_155159_952_zpse1d8b19a.jpg

The original ID tag is pretty much worn out. I can make out the "4" and the "H", but they don't seem to be on the same line of text. I see faint hints of an old serial number too.

Quick underside view of the hydraulic unit.

Love the graphic image on the side frame.

Here is photo with the top plate removed:

This jack is a "wounded warrior;" half the handle bar is broken away. The owner told me that happened when he was a kid, and he was afraid to tell his dad about it.
IMG_20131025_160502_974_zps8782f9c6.jpg

I offered to find out the specific model number for this nice old gentleman, and then to try and find him an exploded view, etc, (from Bull's Blackhawk Jack catalog pages). Then I told him that he could probably order a parts kit from Hiball.

So, have you any input, O Garage Journal gurus? ;)

Well, I just spent a couple of hours reading up on these old jacks. Learned a lot, especially from the Restoring the 1930's Garage thread. I learned that my jack is a "Tom Boy. Model 782 Walker. Probably made in the early forties. I need to fix the seals. It works well, but has been leaking for years. Lately it has been getting worse. Is this something easily done in a home garage? Here are a couple pics:

 Fantastic job, I'm not sure if "restoration" is the proper word, maybe "better than new"? That is beautiful and functional.

CRTDI is correct, that is a Blackhawk S4, 4 ton, 3.75-24" lift jack, long body ~48", ~200lbs. Thanks to some new knowedge from our expert Hiball. Those are very cool looking jacks, but a pain and $ to rebuild. Hard parts are next to impossible to find, most have to be made, the seal kit is ~2x what most seal kits are (~$100 for the S4 but don't quote me on that), and to top it off, they need some special tools to rebuild. I was considering purchasing one for DIY use, but was persuaded against it thanks to the expert.

Sweet jack. Member Hiball is our resident jack expert. He has a sticky in his sig that is a good read. Do a search on that model, I think there have been a few rebuilt on here before. To my knowledge rebuild kits are avaiable and pretty reasonable according to a google search.

Here's some of mine. Weaver's are 20 ton, 10 ton and 2 ton. The Lincoln is a 10 ton.

Cleveland. We rock.
Picked up a Weaver last night, no tag but it looks to be a WA-72 perhaps. Can anyone confirm that?

Works great, no leaks, holds height under load. Maneuvers very easily.

Appears to be a 72, should be some factory stamping on top of hydraulic unit near the rear.

Castle equipment for all your future needs or if your interested at learning about Weavers history, they are truley the best floor Jack ever made IMO.

I picked up this Weaver WA-73 recently from my uncle.
Not sure of the age on this one,

He says that it will slowly lower under weight so it probably needs a rebuild but it looks to be in pretty good condition.

Got one very similar to yours. It's a great jack... You'll get a ton (or 4) of use out of it. Rebuild it and it'll last a lifetime with regular use.

You guys aren't trying too hard to find one of these rigs. I said you could have mine, and I mean cheap. Not one pm. Here are some pics befor I rattle can painted it.

I could use the tin cover from that jack, koditten.

It would finish off the Walker J134 that I just rebuilt:

Hello,
Was looking for information about an old AJAX bumper jack I've acquired. The instruction label mentions controlling the air pressure to raise and lower the vehicle, but I'm ashamed to say that I can't find the connection for an air hose. The unit is old and heavy with 2 metal swivel casters and 2 cast iron wheels at the front. Would anyone have some info about these?

The Walker is a 4 Ton unit so it would make it comparable to an S4. You gave me something to think about and play with when I get both of these guys rebuilt.

I attached a couple more pictures. One picture of the Jack's side by side again and one picture of the pump on the walker Jack. Unfortunately the sticker took some damage.

attachment.php

just saw this thread since it got kicked up to the top.
I have the same jack as that bottom one... never knew what it was. If reading scramblers post right, its an S4.

Anyway, I've always been curious as to what the purpose of that cowled up part is (right between the rear wheels)

It's not as pretty or as cool as some of the others here, but this is my little Blackhawk. It was in the mechanical room at work & my boss knew I like old shop stuff, so he told me to take it home.

Hello All, I'm new to the forum and I see this is a old thread, but what the heck. I recently purchased a big old floor jack for a few bucks and was hoping someone could help with info on the jack. It's a "Joyce Liftmaster Hydraulic Jack". Model 4L - 4 ton. Cool as hell. Pumped right up but wont release. Does anyone know this brand of Jack? How old is it? How are the controls on the handle supposed to work? Any information is appreciated. Thanks - Jim

Hello CRTDI, thanks for the link, it was helpful. I removed the cover to the oil reservoir and it was low, but regardless the jack won't release - it wont go down when I press the release lever. The rod into the release value moves but no release - it's stuck in the up position. Any ideas? Thanks - Jim
