3/8" Socket Spinners!

It came up in discussion that, while I have a few of these, not everyone does. I find them to be quite handy, as a lot of what I work on mechanically is more than adequetly served by what is essentially a nut driver. Now, I love nut drivers and tend to use them much more than any 1/4" socket...

I can’t resist the dark finish 1/4” drive sets. This one arrived yesterday just missing a few items but it did come with a crossbar.

I try. I’m not a fan of incomplete sets. Speaking of incomplete sets, the 3/8” drive Artisan ratchet arrived in the mail today. I replaced the S-K marked placeholder. Still waiting for the long extension to arrive and I’m looking for a reasonably priced speeder.

A couple of items arrived in the mail today. The ratchet is a bit nicer than the one that lives in the Brazil carry box.

This postwar box is an upgrade from the more rusty one that needs refinishing. I transferred the sockets to the nicer box after polishing them up a bit.

Thanks to a tip from Kdaniel, I paid up for this early Patent Pending 1/2” drive ratchet with the difficult to find small control knob. I wanted it for my prewar S-K Chrome set. It replaces a Patent Pending ratchet with the conventional control knob.

The long extension for the 3/8” drive Artisan set arrived today. Now I just need the speeder to complete the set.

Got some pretty nice narrow groove sockets in from an eBay seller. Added them to the Artisan set.

The speeder arrived today for the Artisan 3/8” drive set. The handle had some inbedded grease but was overall in good condition. It was advertised as S-K Wayne but checking the pictures closely showed it as the earlier diamond marked
Cleaned it up.
Cleaned some rust off of a breaker that came today. In the Artisan box
Although complete the box was pretty unattractive so I decided to minimize the rust and give it a quick repaint. Sometime down the road I may strip the entire box and do a new wrinkle finish paint job. I’ll have to wait for much warmer weather.

Nice addition of the early 42470. I recently added another one to the collection as well. I'm happy that it's a fully functioning example.

Haven't cleaned it up yet. Here are some quick shots I took to show a customer at work.

Eventually they changed the design, and the small lever changed shape too. The middle ratchet here has a snap ring. I wonder if there were rebuild kits.

Did the bottom one come apart in the front, I found pictures of this one that did.

The cap held by the screw came off like that. I don’t remember if the drive side came out. I don’t think so, but it’s been a while. It isn’t handy to check at moment

I’m wondering if that flat cap above was a replacement, there’s a lot going on there.

Yep, no snap ring. Good thing it works okay.

Doesn’t look pressed together. Could be an inaccessible snap ring. If you had two, you could start prying and twisting. Are the two divots opposite the left and right mark machined in or just some kind of defects?

They appear on both mine and 3Bay’s so they could hold the secret to disassembly.

1942. They show as being discontinued in 1943. In 1941 they would have been marked S-K Chrome.

I'm cleaning out my collection of SK, SK Wayne and SK Tool, tools that I have obtained over the years from estate sales and auctions. I have 1/4, 3/8s and 1/2-inch rachets and an assortment of sockets. Also, extensions and breaker bars. Plus, a leather handle carry box or two. Small and medium cases for socket sets. Tool chest dated to be 1956. Can't remember number of drawers at this time. It is stripped down awaiting to refreshed. If any interest in anything I can text pictures to you. Don, do you know if the box dimensions ever changed sizes? I have a SK-Wayne master chest, but some of the boxes I have that are earlier/later dont want to fit in the slots. Or I have them in the wrong slots... Is there a specific way to put them together?

I can only speak to boxes made from WW2 vintage to boxes made in the mid ‘50s. As far as I can tell those are all dimensionally the same although there are minor differences in the positioning of the latches. I have no experience with Wayne or post Wayne versions.

I don’t have one that early but it sure looks like the 3/8” drive deep socket set would fit in there.

My Old Forge marked contract set may be almost that early. Note that all of the sockets are 12 point.

It even has the correct S-K set number on the edge of the box.

Here is a find from a couple of months back, picked it again on the most recent Saturday, nothing spectacular, probably belongs in User Modified Tools as well. A SK Wayne 45170 bent into a 90° is angle near the mid point of the handle. Not sure why, but I'm OK with it. Guy was a local farmer, and it may have been this change made adjusting / changing a piece of farm implement to his needs.

I wish I would have taken a before picture of this one. I had to soak, heat, etc. this for two weeks to get it loosened up. Looks to be an 1930s era unmarked S-K 20170.
