I found this S-K made 1/2" drive Artisan #4270 ratchet at a pawn shop for $10. This thing looks and feels new!

Welcome Bill. I believe the S-K Tools logo as seen on your case was in use from 1969 through 1985. I may be off a little but I think it's close.

And here's an Old Sherman-Klove 1/2" drive set. It even includes the original inspection tag from the factory. The breaker bar is a newer vintage. If anyone wants to contribute the correct one, I'd be pleased to update the set.

Here is my 1/2" drive flex handle example of what might have come in your very nice set. Any chance of getting a larger photo of the tag that came with the set? Thanks,

Thanks Steve. It appears to have been little used, but it shows some age just from living in his toolboxes and jostling around. I plan to update the ratchet soon with the new SK fine tooth drop in head mechanism and start using it more. I also have a newer set of S-K combination wrenches (early 2000s) and some random older pieces. I will take inventory and post a photo of the vintage stuff. Too darn cold in the garage lately though, 7 degrees out.

Bill, IMHO if I were going to change out the ratchet, I'd look for an older one from the 60-70's. I think they're better made, last forever as you can still get rebuild kits from SK for free, and it'll be much cheaper than a new one. If you know where to look you should get a 3/8" drive model for around $10. FYI, don't go by the part number as SK hasn't changed them since the 40's. Good luck.

Thanks for the picture of the tag. I think that I'll crop it and print off a few for my S-K sets. I found a few S-K pieces at an estate sale today. Just ignore the small sockets. The other pictures are a 12" adjustable that a fellow collector sent me. The first one is how it was received and the rest are after a little cleaning.

That's a good haul Don. How did you clean the Adj wrench?

Here's an interesting little known factoid: SK tools made socket sets in the 30s (and 40s?) with the name Brazil on them The sockets are identical to "modern" SK sockets but say "chrome alloy" rather than "SK". I read that some of these same sets were left with no label on them so that local hardware stores could put their own label on. Excellent quality! Such sets with BRAZIL are EXTREMELY rare and if found in pieces people do not know what they are. Here is a really nice clean Brazil 1/4 drive socket set I found.

I have seen some of these scattered in a couple places. I have a few marked Chrome alloy. I have seen some marked Brazil. Not sure if any of mine are. I will be looking for them with intensity now.
Thanks for the information.

Since I wasn't able to disassemble it (my favorite method), I cleaned it with brake cleaner which removed most of the paint and a hand wire brush. I picked off most of the remaining paint with a dental pick and lubed the adjusting wheel and pin with some 3 in 1 oil.

I've found several of these sockets as well in all three drive sizes.

With that dark finish and in that box with that decal, I would pretty confidently say that set was made during WW2. You are lucky to have received it from a family member!

Maybe I made it sound as if I was buying a whole new ratchet, but the kit to convert the one I have to fine 80 tooth from SK was just twenty bucks shipped and I still have the handle I got from my dad. Already done.

I've already got quite a few SK tools, but when I saw this set on Craiglist a couple days ago I couldn't let it go to just any stranger.

Not a barn burning bargain at $64 but it's in quite good shape, and 30% of the cost of the equivalent in a plastic case.

I was lucky enough to acquire this knurled 1/4” drive set at an estate sale on Friday. Actually my wife grabbed it while I was parking the car. It seems complete right down to the crossbar and almost unused. It will be a very nice addition to my S-K collection.

I posted some pics of this brazil set in its own thread before, but in light of it being an sk product, I will post it here as well for any sk fans.

I have gone through my tool box and found I have a almost complete SK socket set 1/2" drive set.

15/16 – 40130
7/8 – 40128
13/16 – 40126
¾ - 40124
11/16 – 40122
9/16 – 40118
½ - 40116 -2x

The 1/2 I have twice, one of them looks older (not pictured, with a "dotted" ring). And I miss 5/8 40120.

I guess I should post my S-K find of Wednesday last week.....

Picked up this set (with extras) for $6 bucks.....
WTH1.jpg WTH2.jpg

Then, at the same seller's table, I found this diamond S-K breaker bar (paid $6 bucks for a 8 tool lot with this included...makes it .75 cent)

I found this S-K box at an estate sale this morning. It's in pretty good shape and included the top tray but unfortunately it's missing the front cover. If anybody happens to run across one please let me know.

That looks like the one I just fixed up. Front cover was cracked and all bent and rusted. Still working on it. I am missing tray though if anyone has one....
